  1. Thanks Paul, I didnt know the prices went down for the AM,s this year from the increased 265.00 last year my bad. And i understand the #'s entered determan the payout places, and your right on about anyone who can help from personal skills to finding sponcers ..i would love to see more man toys prizes included with the payouts and door prizes hmm some charters could offer 1/2 day trip for 4, drawing maybe to the "observers to help bring in more motavated observers"..and the ripple effect of getting hooked might bring charters some welcomed trips in the future,.the "gift bags" at wilson a few years back at regerstration was a neat idea ...The volenteer helpers are a must for this type of hudge undertaking... Maybe working with other derbys on diff finger lakes, swaping some promo stuff or information on derby i never heard of the pro ams till getting on this site ..a display or poster at local marinas on the finger lakes could catch many potential fishermens eyes and some one to burn 1000 cds of the pro ams video could be a good inexpensive way to Show the Pro Ams ..Another long distance dooable volenteer job .. Great idea on splitting up the teams who own their own boat, It would be as easy for all the ams to find new crews and fish seperate as it would be for all the pros who own their own boat to split up,find new crews and fish seperate boats. If the result of fishing the derbys gave some of our team members insentive to buy bigger boats i dont feel we should split up as a team for that reason. The reason we "teams" like to fish togeather as a team effort to apply our massive amount of talent of catching fish, and share some good times as old (some older) friends..huh bobby?
  2. back in the day i built a sled from a old pair of downhill skies for runners, with a plywood base it was only 2 ft wide but made it easy to haul the gear and doubled for a dog sled with my 2 springers when the kids came along and got bored, but a 4x4 sheet of 1/2 in beefed up with a few furring strips around the edge would accomadate a standard size hunting blind .mine was about 6 in high but a 1 1/2 (or 2x4 ripped ) would give some spacing between bottom and skies and if ya wanted to get fancy for deeper snow glue a couple old rolled up butt busters (rollup sleds) to the plywood for ease of pulling total weight empty should be about 40 lbs ..you could even rip it down the center toss on a couple hinges and fold it for a hatch back...maybe ill build one down in fla this winter ........ok forget that part...
  3. Ok With Some recent discussion on 1 rule in the pro am's it seems to be a "hot topic" as to stay in or drop out of the pro ams....To have such a dissusion as we do now from home (or work ) would of been impossable 10 years ago.. Maybe we could use this new technolagy to IMPROVE the derbys...Our first derby (team L.O.U.S.E.R.S) WAS LIKE A ADVENTURE into one of the coolest fishing experences i have (and i think i can sa our team) had ever done ..The only other "big" derby i ever got into is the "Lake Trout Memorial Derby" on seneca lake..and ive done it for 10ish years ...the numbers in the derby have droped a lot in recent years sems like the numbers were near 2500 when I started and have dropped a lot (should of done my homework as there is a site with some info)........Regardless the total numbers have droped ,the entry price has gone up ,and the payout has gone down. Over the years "my" orignal crew has sorta drop out due to , new jobs and family life, changes. But my son and I still Get in tho the spark is a little less each year dispite my learnig a few things or two about fishing (catching too), its our time togeather......................... Ok digresion set in again sorry....But the way i see it is the Pro/Ams are sorta heading the same way...higher fees, less entrants, and smaller payouts......... So maybe some one could start a pole from the Pro Am Board (proactive) or open discussion....I know time is a factor for some kinda wedding ,graduation time of year.. Money is a issue Entry Fee ,Dockage, Observer ,Food and Hotel or sleeping cost ,..(not to mention tackle but thats not a cost factor as it a nessety ) After placing well enuf to be in the "normal" payout range top 10 , And after planning all year for our derby time ..its kinda a big letdown to hear "we can only pay 5 or 6 places" I Try to pump up the derby as much as i can but im only a entrant not a board member ,and many of us on this site Thank the committie many time a year for their efforts...so maybe "WE" can have some postive input ,how to Put the "SPARK" into the Pro Ams if the board decides they "need our help" From volenters, ideas ,sponcers,???????????? placees to stay at a discount (not higher fees another story),maybe a gas station will work with us in each town and port .heck 50 fishermen getting gas gotta have a slight (very little ) increase in adult beverage sales, smokes, ice and even soda.. .... ok once again me trys to help some ................ Ray K. Team L.O.U.S.E.R.S. Ps. if anyone can offer constructive dooable ideas , even if its to the new guys to help us understand the the whole process from home so we can plan ahead for a derby..........
  4. Hmmm Clevland = good walleye grounds,,,,,Hmmmm daughter goes to Bowling Green State U.,,,,,,,Did I see you were looking for a new best fishing buddy? I alway enjoy counting the aphyxiated sea gulls on 80/90 this time of year,by the power plant.
  5. Ugly stix 10 ft 6 heavy , kinda like a big broom stick ,but the flex is real nice with dypsy load and give some well needed action under load. and the stiffer rod keeps my dypsys well away from my outside riggers ,and thats very important when musky is driving in circles er i mean straight...59.00 bucks is a good price too. and twilly tips need to be added. they give me almost 25 ft seperation deployed on a 8 ft beam boat. and every less tangle i can avoid from the back of the boat with MY crew is a plus...........but not a given..
  6. If your gonna do seneca mostly ya might get the wire and most important TWILLIE tips the strain of fleas in seneca are day and night different from the fleas on Ontario, and will clog your power pro.........Ontario fleas it dosent matter as twillie tips and power pro will clean off as good as wire (almost) 50 lb power pro is a good dia to use,, and also in seneca you dont need a 1000 ft spool on each rod as ya ant gonna get a 700 ft run outa a 10 lb laker pick up a couple 300ft spools of wire....tuff times require tuff decions ,,do you spend morey on tackle or pay bills,,??? to me its a no brainer throw the bills in the garbage and go fishing....so spool up 1 pole with 1000ft,and 1 with power pro but when you do the math your only saving 15 to 20 bucks and one good flea clogging episode will give you that good ole 20/20 hindsite.. If your trulley dedicated to school and are doing well, Ill step up and give ya some older dypsys,600 ft wire, few spindocters,flys,line,......a little black paint and couple drops epoxy will get the dypsys fixed (depth ring a little loose)...give me a call soon as wiffy and i will be heading outa town and my son ant touching my fishing stuff (geese dad this guy showed up and said you told him to take everything!) might even have a spoon or two...607 769 7947
  7. Nice eaters stan ,,, too bad ya couldnt sneek some forage base fish in there imagine if the average bow was 7 lbs....and i feel your pain of loosing the fly and dodger why just last year alone I lost my first dodger/fly set up.......in 7 years of trolling,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,dude i think that solid line on the bottom of the fishfinder screen MIGHT be the BOTTOM justa guess i know i know the bottom of your lake is as flat as that little hill in the background but it still boggles my little mind how much tackle you leave behind,,,are you shure you didnt sneek your little Christmas friends cousin from mexico on the boat (TEQULA)
  8. Sorry after all the grief we got from the other guy from Elmira " Jason",you will need to go through a very secure screening proces ... so we will need to screen your tackle box and remove all sharp objects,,,screen you boat and remove any long objects (poles nets ect),,now stand in front of the screener and turn in circles,,,,smile for the cameras,,,and the hardest part will be you can no longer bring more that 3oz of your favorite liq. on the boat........CRAP the security dept. is on the cell phone ........forget the securty thing your IN. Welcome to the site and very soon you will discover the class clowns and the serious fishermen on this site ,,,"J" and i spend a few days a year on seneca too as do many members here so due to the breakdown in securty we welcome ya with open ears er i mean armes ,,arms...
  9. after my many hours on hold with EAGLE/LAWRANCE... dual beam is just that 2 beams each dedicated to the given cones from mfg with 2 seperate transponders moulded in one tranducer with the (head)unit having 2 seperate recivers again each dedicated to given freq. and screen displayed or both screens (split) .....im not shure but after eyeing many models ive never seen a 200 freq. with a super wide cone 18 to 22 deg being most common range i remember seeing. and the lower freq are always wider cone ... kinda reverse of what we are used to with a flashlight that we can see,(wide cone see closer narrow beam see further) so i would say no to changing cones between freq, due to them being 2 seperat thingies....most if not all high end units ($4000.00 range) have several transponder ports in the head that connect to "your need " trans ducer ...go to Furno site and look at the big boy toy section... am i still Rambling????
  10. when musky was a boy back then he helped with the racks,he was known as " Little Running Bobby Musky" now we just call him " Running Musky" on the boat after he takes his water er i mean good luck pill!! As the rods always go off about the time he turns the faucet on.
  11. yup janz i didnt read the link but started doing homework when i started trollin ,so typicaly the 200 (most common )will give you approx 20 deg cone and due to higher feq travel shorter distance is good for but gives you more (pics) so to speek you get better detail in a smaller zone but if you turn off all filters and auto features and put in "arc" mode you can get up to 65 ish deg cone but you need to tweek unit to get bigger cone and suffer a little on detail, the lower 50 or 83 feq travels further" longer wavelengths " (same theory why elephants can communicate from several miles apart they can put out and hear super low freq.) thats why it is recomended for deep water ....but trollers have found due to wider cone tho they may not give as good of detail (less pics kinda like blowing up a cell phone picture to a 8x10" compared to a 35mm or high quality camera ) that they can see back to there rigger balls and even spoons to see fish come to spread but sometimes lower end units need a trained eye to see this. you can angle your 200 hrz slightly back and get same results but sacrafice high speed ability of unit to read bottom which ant no big deal in ontario as we use it for trollin 99.9% of the time and if you dont angle it too much your depth will be very close to actual... Now if ya wanna have a little winter project to the guys with trim tabs you can do as "Top Gun" outa Osweago does and mount a extra transducer on your tabs so you can angle your transduser from the cockpit to snoop way back there to play around with the fish behind your spread.. hope the plummer translation helps.
  12. atlantic were the only native salmon back then, and ill bet there were a few good days streams for those who knew of them

  14. YO HOO FELLAS ,Im gonna be giving a "short" segment on buffy fishing. this will include, depth of water to buffy fish, proper applacation of sun screen, how to keep the biting flys off your (well you know),and most important HOOK SAFTY,,,,,,,,,,,,, ,,,,,,,,,,,,,, (try explaining that in the emergengy room).....so get there early as the BACK seats will be filling fast and youll have to sit in the front row...OPPS never mind ill be outa town then..
  15. Happy Birfday Larry opps, Capt Larry Sir, Im pretty shure you will have a good day if Jerry dont drive into your car,or ya Loose your cigebutts,..The pics chad posted show the love of fishing goes back a few years, The shorts look normal to me darm kids nowadays gotta have em below the knees ,geese even the girls in Catholic schools i went to 40 years ago had shorter skirts than most shorts nowadays. Your -Now- quiet nature hides many stories of fishing, pranks, and the good ole days..But the time ive had listin to you and Jerry have been priceless "THANK YOU" ...so keep popin the popcorn, make shure the mustard supply if freshly stocked, and get a fresh supply of ballons dont want a aged one to pop on your boat. And Keep "O"n a hopeing .... Ray K.
  16. been a little busy all day with cold weather hope all is well, and ya had a good day.. see ya in april if all goes as planned
  17. yup to what glen said
  18. this site can get ya a lot of help too just ask away..
  19. ROD ARE YOU SAYING LETTING ME BORROW THE PINK TOWEL WAS JUST THAT!!!!!!!
  20. Ok well ive gotta admit i have chatted with other boats (some names here who are against) during the derbys when allowed and i can say it really didnt help my fishing intake , i run my program they run theirs (im bullheaded and "zoned" in when derby fishing).usually i prefish a few days prior the derby and 90% of what i "figured out" dont work on derby day due to the stupid fish changing their pattern, winds, ect....Its kinda fun to talk with friends on the water even in derbys as thats the only time i see some of you guys.. and after the dock ropes are tied we chat some more...The home port is a hudge advantage (i think) specially to the charters who follow the fish on a daily basis..but the day of derby can throw a cabash into that too (huh del).....so if its closed its closed ,open its open ,6 fish 9 fish 12 fish rules are rules ....Sometimes im a go with the flow guy..but if a majority is against for whatever reason then that always should be taken into serious thought when estlabishing the "rules"...With the struggling economy the AM. devision has droped off like flys(no pun Tom) ,Rules, money, politics,I dont know the reason ,this site has done more I feel to get to the "new guys" as that was how we (team) discovered the PRO/AMS. And a longstanding friendship with many..on here. So many times a year I try to do my little part to encourage the guys on the fench to hop off get into a derby or 4 ,You will meet many people who share the love of fishing, knowlage of fishing, and the competative side of derby fishing..You dont need a fancy boat (look at my 23 yr old barge),or all the fancy fishing stuff that some have (not me) , and if you stumble into that hungry school of fish during the derby there is a good chance you will place well ,get some nice gifts, and be "a hero" till the next derby..I feel the commitie needs some help in rounding up more sponcers, some nice door prizes, and ways to pull in new competators..After 10 years of organizing "The World Series Of Cinderella Softball" (2500 competators) i know all too well the planing, and burnout that occures with "big mostly volenteer events" ....so what ever the out come a BIG THANK YOU TO ALL THE FOLKS THAT SPEND COUNTLESS HOURS PUTTIN TOGEATHER THE ....PRO/AMS RAY K.
