all the time ...unless the kings start to fire then you better enjoy them without the extra tangle after the king fight , which will be so bad that you will be cutting all the swivels and retying, when im hunting i run everything ,if im getting kings and steelies near each other ill run my upper stacked rod in the steelies temp with a slider if im just getting those pesty kings keep the program clean ,now spring fishing is sliders all the way all the time for me.. (well top rod only i never double slider with stacked rigger) and this is easy for me to say but hard for me to do and that is sometimes less is more. -

They look like a house fly. But they're ANKLENIPPERS.
ray koziatek replied to Fishstix's topic in Open Lake Discussion
they hatch outa the water when its dead calm you can see em pop outa the little eggs or sacs ,when i was way out there as i so often am (offshore bob) ive scooped the sac outa the water and gave birth right in my hand.kinda felt like a papa till the sob bit me then a swatted him like he was my own kid.............if you get out on a calm day shut everything down and watch what happens sometimes it lookes like a trout stream during a mayfly hatch, steelies hitting the surface and jumping everywhere.bring along a ultralight or flyrod.things just havent worked out for me to try this year.but there on the boat.. -

a lot of what ive learnsd is trial and error so when i post some probly shake there head and mumble the idiots posting again ,so dont take what i say as #1 advise, steelies tolerate and like warmer 55deg water and will feed in 65deg all day long usually ya dont need long leads for them15 to 40 ok if its bumpy 2to4ftrs runem 4 to10 ft back and i always run sliders smaller fluttery (light weight) sharp hook spoons, orange ,silver green , gr dolphin,purple/silver,blk/silver,blue dolphin before 10am, flys and spinnys will work but i usually put em on wire with dypsy out of the spread in the steelie temps but if the 45 deg water is 30or more ft below ill put a spinny down there for the kings at the same time.if you can, sneak a small blk/silver stickbait with full core knot at water if the temp is near 50 ft (65 deg or colder),,,,,,,,,,,steelies some times (frequently) swim around in dime size (small) schools so the long lines could be a pain if ya turn around and get back on em in a hurry ,usually if im hunting ill run a full spread but when i find some rigger fish pull the long lines and stay tight on the fish as they can and will shut down in a matter of a hour or two.also dont be afraid to zig zag on ocassion as sleelies (rainbows) are a reaction fish and the speed change some times will trigger em more so than kings but zig zag is good to use on most fish unless your on a intersecting course with another boat then make your intentions clear with steady headings most experienced operators will figure out your intentions ok 1 out of10 will.........hope this helps,,,,,, Ray K. -

looks like there comming out of hibernation the temps should be getting back to norm anyday,,if you look at attheoak site which are the post of primarly Charter capt. who share info amonst themselves and others for the best spots and are on the water everyday for many hours these guys make there living from the water and their post have been pretty sad latly.so dont feel to bad about hitting the water for a couple hours and getting nutin, for some reason the lake is draggin its feet on flipping as us tupid people call it...(UPWELLING)....when the down temp gets back to 70+ FEET AND THE THERMO cline gets a little thicker theyll be out to play,if ya had a hot spot for browns in the spring move out 20ft deeper than where the thermo intersects the bottom and run your brown program it will work.the 150 to 275 depths should work for kings use your surface currents to cover more ground .if ya got a 1mph current east and ya run west 7 -8 miles youll cover 5 more miles in 5 hrs going with the current covering more ground for the time your out .and if your hotspots arnt working that 7 mile run may just be your new hotspot.............. -

bob for someone who didnt care enuf to show up i really dont know why you even have a intrest ,as we left deans cove at 545 a nice brown or LL jumps in front of us over 75 ft water marks everywhere and tons of bait we kinda drove in circles waiting for the starting siren to go off droped stuff in shallow and got a 17 " LL in a short time on a orange white spoon 45 ft down over 100 ft water quite a shelf in that area probly should of stayed in a 1 mile circle few weeds and no fleas lots of marks. headed so. with a nice ripper on the wire 180 out mtn dew w/ gr fly new gut ripes the lips off whatever it was before i could stop him got a few more small LL. and 1-23in laker lots of weeds and fleas were pretty bad ,the lake was real green looked like a small lake cleaning its self with all the alge.great day to be on the water if you were tubing or sking flat and hot not to good for fishing for some of us .(most) i think some guys had some fish leftover from a spring trip to the niagra bar they were pretty big lakers 8to9 lbrs, thanks to fishstix i brought home a couple more fish than we caught nothing as good as fresh lakers when cooked proper i have only fished that lake a couple times in the past during the spring i liked the screen i had in the deans cove area ,other than blowing my main moter it was a good time Thank you to all involved .. -

ray koziatek replied to Don M.'s topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
oops i only go there in mid aug for the derby and target king salmon, and overheard a conversation that these two boats only got 2 steelhead that time of year but juging by the large numbers i see in the salmon river they gotta be all over . we will be running a steelie program this year due to the fact my nefew and myself have landed (and released)several steelies in the salmon river over 15 lbs the last two years one was 19lbs thats derby money(not in sept),im shure if you run a good steelie program youll get em out front in the temp zone and the cohos should be staging and feeding with the same program steelies are fun to watch but a coho will learn ya a lesson or two specally if ya bring him in green as he's charging the boat.good luck that time of year youll find me wading in the river. -
