I used the word "only" as i guessed it was bigger due to spread and mass..I'm as happy as " a pig in sh^t" with this deer. Getting Nice deer has a lot to due with the hunters skill, to put himself in the" right spot" the " right time" is controlled by the deer movement . You need to be able to read the woods you hunt, not the easy stuff rubs and scrapes , but broken spider webs, nibbled ends of small brush, stickers missing on one side of a pricker branch, small tender plants with signs of recently beining stepped on. direction of weeds and grass near a bedding area (returning ,going ,or both). and just as the 3-S's =speed ,speed, speed, apply to trolling (and hunting), the 3 W's = wind, wind, wind (direction) are the most important in hunting the big boys..All the scent gimmics in the world at gonna fool a big bucks nose ,underware ,innerware, outer ware, waffers, electronic gizmos and gadgets some costing over 400 bucks....For many many years nice deer were taken using "tricks and methods" learned at deer camp and family gatherings ,those secrets are being lost and replaced by Editeded hunting shows ,sponcered by the products they flaunt carelessly with a heard of deer 5 yds away, yes sir its good for the stores and products, but does little for a hunter who lacks basic skills..if you need a little "camp info" and help with yer woods I suppose i could be a little help full .

Good for you , I know the emotions you were feeling waiting for a shot. Couple years ago i watched a buck stand like a statue for almost a hour seeing nuttin but his head and horns. My heart rate and every emotion with "Buck Fever" cycled about 5 times in that hour. With the same results as you " I got him" ..I had my muzzy so 1 shot was it and when he took off as if I missed my heart sank as he ran straight at me...out of sight (behind a brushy area) . Then i saw and heard him him crash in a small tree and i almost melted with relief. So yes Sir Im with ya on yer succesfull hunt. Congrats man.. or as I say ..COOL! -
um in my post last nite that got lost in russia I did downgrade from expert to beginner ,yup I forgot my knife thingy after draggin that buck over 500 yds alone ,it was a good stress test with the extra weight. UM NO rope either..2nd time i forgot a knife in 40 plus years ,at least the last buck was with a bow and i field dressed with broadhead..wasnt gonna leave that rack for a 1/2 mile paddle up river to van,at least i had a paddle. made last min decision to stalk instead of bring stand and backpack. only scores 146 but I ant complaining..After he droped i lite up a smoke and sat still 2 doe and a 6pt then a 9pt were within 5 min behind him and they walked 20 yds from me downwind with me smoking had to shoo them away before i started fillin doe tags,1 a day is enuf. all corn feed deer. Dec was at meat cutter and it only 3.5 yrs.. suprised me it was that young ..Thanks Ps i walked less than 300 yds in 5 hrs still hunting and they was up and moving at 1130 am..

Calls and calling ant what ya see on TV almost every hunt is editad for the sole pourpose of selling sponcership for the hunting items so carslessly tossed around with a smasher buck 20 yds away. Everything you see will work at the right time place and spicies yer after. The best lure before sunrise might never catch 1 fish for the next 24 hours till the next morning. Well deer have their same patterns, habbits, and time to react to different calling situations. So dont tossem just yet but learn when and how to use yer calls. I could learn ya a lot in one hunt but i'd be spinnin yer head trying to answer such a variable situation question.

OH JOY ...............Yes o'll timer the years have been good and the friends meet from this site even better. Last nite Our family was in one room (concert hall Michigan State) but not all sitting in the same row. It was our first Full Symphony Orchestra we were able to attend to see our little girl blow wind across her flute. As you know before a performance many instruments must be fine tuned, warmed up,and reeds moistened. I turned to Carol and said (as many performers all did their last min. tuning in various keys at the same time) "kinda sounds like her 1st 3rd grade concert performing at their best). The intro peice was boaring at best ,but "Hector Berlioz" Symphonie Fantastique" 1830. Was Awsome. Yes the missing family member from our row was the lead Flute player among over 100 other performers in the orchestra. In the nearly 1 hour long performance it was clear to see our "Little girl" was gone and a beautiful Woman had filled her shoes. Was it the music or the years of memories that caused our eyes to tear up,You decide when you pull up this piece on the internet ,and read the Program notes and hear the music in a quiet room..............HAPPY BIRTHDAY BOB. I love you man!

Deer hunting and Trapping same area need input
ray koziatek replied to Duckman1's topic in Big / Small Game
Big bucks ant normal deer, ya gotta play the wind 120% now and move near the thickest area from the trapline....Worse than the leary buck is a mature doe after mating......they alert at every noise....but hey I'm justa plummer..who also is a expert on deer hunting....YES I Did say I'm a EXPERT not to brag just someone who has over 40 years doing the thing i Love most! And do lots and lots of research.. -
Winter Blues: Anyone head south for some fishing action?

du keys ,ant no better fishin -
Every day on the farm could be a story in its self. Day one I had my first shooter (my friends buck) at 5 ft from my tree behind me ,but due to branches all i could do was watch him check his rub line and move on,followed by a beauty of a 140 8 pt 15 min later..(PS I did not set this stand position) Arrgh . But after a 10 hr drive and less than 1 hr in the "hunt' iVE LEARNED NEVER TO TAKE THE FIRST 150. I digress, the rest of day one and 2 were sit and observe days...Day 3 was slow till 9;30 when the farmer who works the land shows up with his 10,000 lb fertalizer wagon and 8 wheel tractor . Well when he got close to the woods just 500 yds north of me , all i could see was a wall of deer materalize out of the 3ft tall weeds and woodlot next to it........The good news was I saw the 170 plus I missed last year(another story)....the bad , it was 100 yds and running to the "big woods" along with several smashers... We'll I had seen enuf observing , and made my decision to back out and move to the stand 200 yds south "Deans " Stand (Dean passed in 1996) . But knowing what I know about smart old deer I forced myself to sit lookin at a empty field till after 3 in the afternoon...Ive watched Big bucks stand like a statue for over 1 hr when on alert and the best hunter in the world ant gonna get in gun range ,let alone bow range.. I slid into Deans stand and did my ranging of every opening i might get a shot out to 50 yds...Maybe 430 I hear a grunt then a G_R_U_N_T.....as 2 deer were chasin doe just outa sight 80 yds in front of me...at 70 yds i see a brown body moving my way and figure the doe gave them the slip ,now im at 110% ready at 50 yds she grew a 150 in rack when It cleared the final branches blocking its rack. I have never seen a buck look more dishearted as he began his circle for his lost love. At 1 yd from my shooting lane and i give him his lost love "baaa" (works for sheep too).....He stops perfect at 41 42 yds looks my way on the ground ,1/2 sec later he looks up and sees a bear in a tree (me buffy hunting) ,,,He goes from "were are you honey" to Drill Instructer on deck" stance in the next 1/2 sec. thats when i let it fly. I could see the shot went 2 in left of my aim and 2 in high .. For the next 5 min I reflect and think of My friend """"DON""" who passed in 2011 and soak in the view of the woods as seen from Deans Eyes many years ago... I sneek the 40 yds as i know the Big Boy is less than 200 yds from me in that brush and my friend still had a empty tag.. The impact area had more blood than a slug hit but a high hit and no pass through left leaf and ground trackin my only option for the next 40 yds..I find my 3rd spect of blood ,and im 2nd guessing my shot. 5 more yds another spect its starting (blood trail). Then In front of me less than 5 yds their is a monster racked buck , I knew it was a shooter from the stand but I never ponder on the rack before the shot... I actually thought it wasnt my deer because of no blood and large rack and less than 50 yd run after shot. when i rolled it over to confirm my "hopes" a loud suckin sound and bucket of blood and finally my shot placement closed the Hunt.. When gutting later, I got both lungs (top rear) liver, and main artery below spine ... As i put my "traditional Green grass" in the dead deers moulth so its "spirit will have food to eat" (traditional Indian Belief) , I Know my only task left is to get my Friend's son on a nice buck so we can go home ........ For you guys who think because your in prime hunting country hunting is easy ,It ant .....I sat for 10 hrs this day for a 3 to 8 sec window of opertunity and 1 to 2 sec. to aim hold and release my shot ...... """"Thank You Don"""" Ray K.

Well had a unexpected trip to the farm in Indiana,my friend and myself, did well... Of course I could come up with the story if anyone wants to hear it....If 4 in wernt broke off the main beam it should go 156 before deductions ,,,if ya added every point (legal one 14) it woulda broke 160,,,just not the mass this year but the locals seen to think the drought has some effect to the horns . The pedicals look like they coulda supported more antler so maybe their is something to it. 1 G2 was 12.5 another 12 in ..I just slapped numbers as i measured at the farm ,I'll break out the cable and straight edge for good score,my arrows are only 28 In so the width ant super ,But hey when ya got a perfect 42 yd shot ya cant pass it up when bow hunting .. Now if i had a gun i mighta beat this one.....hopefull my friends will get the bigboy with the firesticks.. Sorry had to use tripod so i couldnt get good pics..

kinda reminds me of washing the cat...or a redneck on bath day....ok Pete im gonna put in some soap now!!!!!!!!!!! -
I,ve said it before BIG bucks are a different breed, they hole up and the does come to them 99.9% of the bucks you see chasing doe,are not the dominate bucks in the area. They are dogging the doe to tire out and steer her from the dominate bucks ,so he dont get his horns rattled by the big boy..If you do see a big boy following does its because ,he just wore out his last girl and their are no backups ready near him... kinda one of the theories behind culling does so the big guys have to move between partners ,and show their weakness for mating in daylight hours. Also a pressured big boy will more often than not hold tight like a rabbit even if your 20 yds from it (if its in heavy cover).....I seen this action many many times on the farm i hunt in Indiana, few years back ,the only spot we could do a 2 man drive (50 yds wide 100 yds long) next to the road and small garden ,I had a 160 class buck burst out of a sorta blowdown overgrown with grass about 10 ft from me and only after i smacked the grass with my walkin stick,,,,,,I had no gun as i filled my tag already tho my buddy made a feable attempt with a muzzle loader...If you ever had a pheasent flush at yer feet then you might know how i felt with a 250 lb buck flushing at mine...The big guy in the pic I posted lives in a small patch 200 yds long and 100 yds wide next to the neighbors barn just off our land..I saw it come out last night if he could of crawled any lower he would of been plowing dirt with his di@k. and he wernt going slow..and he had a smaller deer 20 yds behind him trying to keep up ... was so glad to see that massive rack with the binocs that i didnt even see if the other deer was a doe or spike.(150 to 200 yds away),I,m packing to go to indaina in the morning ive got about 5 to 10 hours ,of video i,ve taken over the last 6 years, with stuff that ya only see on tv. Some day im gonna have someone Edit it ,you know remove the branches , times ive stuffed the camera in my coat while still on, 300 shaky out of focused senes, you know normal rookie stuff..I am bringing the video tomorrow and hope to get some great "peak rut" shots.....If I can ... Ill at least get 1 buck on video .........................every 5 min.....this place is unreal I usually see 15 to 20 different bucks the first 5 hours of daylight....and i ant talking spikes.....Our friend Don Has passed ,(owner ) and the sons let us come back...(YES!!!!) In the past we have taken 120 pluss class, but out of respect for our late friend..and our own managing we will only take 140 or better and 3.5 year minumin age....their are only 4 or 5 majors on the farm but because of the no doe rule we have followed many big boys show up from surronding woods unannounced....If i don't come unglued i should bring a bigun home.....plus this year we will remove 4 to 6 doe to up our odds.but as you know a mature doe ant no gimmie.
