Ray's breach plug cleaning tip fills last tag
ray koziatek replied to chowder's topic in Big / Small Game
reread my post i said" every gun design has its own little quirk that might limit breachplug hole for SAFTY and LONG term use". That is why I am against putting out a post that might be ok or at least doable for your gun whereas another could have a very undesired result (death ,blinding or even minor wounds ).If you are a wepons EXPERT and are willing to advise potentially 1000's of people yup its ok to have someone modify your gun like i did then so be it . but ive dabbled with explosives a few times, have been trained in metal fatigue failure ,and the importance of NOT exceding the recomended load or force. Everything from a kayak to the pitch link bearing play on a helecopter roter head or swashplate has a built in safty tolarence or SAFE operation range for a reason ,normal wear during normal use between inspections for the normal load applied if you exceed that recomended spec rather its a little hole 3 in from yer eye or a bearing capable of handling 1000's of lbs of force on top of a aircraft your playing with the "SAFE TOLLARENCE" limits, and having lost my eyesight in both eyes for over 10 days years ago from a gunpowder backflash I tend to err on the Safty side. I dont shoot the muzzy much and have put around 1000 rounds through it in 7 years and the 24 guage wire is just as tight today as it was 7 years ago,and if it gets sloppy or corroded Ill replace it for the $26.00 rather than take a chance of depending on a seeing eye dog..and have to take sound shots when hunting. If my post of SAFTY FIRST saves one eye then all this peckin i do is worth it and if someone is too lazy or missinformed to properly ,clean a wepon for proper operation then when the "BIG BUCK" walks away lafin.they have no one to blame but themselfs. Now i ant no history major either but it seems to me muzzleloaders have been around a few years and ill bet with every major failure or problem some one along the way made improvements,or died. Ill stick with the improvement guys.... Ok basic quick question do you know why the 209 primer causes a certian amount of inaccuracy with muzzleloaders and if so wouldnt a bigger hole add to this problem?? Just a thought.......for the day. -
BASS FISHING HEY I SAW THAT!!!!!! seems like this spring when i went to the hudson and got striped bass over 37 inches you made some comment like "YEA BUT ITS STILL JUST A BASS" Now yer talkin yer gonna actually terget bass. After lookin at the above pics it appears the other guys are doing all the catchin ,handing you their fish so you can run through some little tunnell cradeling the first walleye youve ever had in your hands to release it in another hole.. bass fishing huumph i get a 25lb pluss bass and you say "just another bass" hey i have a nice bow mount trollin motor with 18 ft remote control ,and it can accept the wireless remote if you have too much rubber spread out on yer lap to move. might even have one or two of them ther castin reels with the hydro mechanical, magnetic induction antibacklash idiot proof deevises built right in it...

Think it was Einstine who said"" for every action their is a oppisite reaction,""sumpting like that. Maybe i should of said ""back pressure". As with every thing from a car engine that can be punched and bored for more power,or a two cyc engine ported for better air flow, you can improve performance, but ill bet youll find it hard for a nascar team to say yup this oll motor has 70,000 miles on it and we ant even changed the plugs yet. Lets bump up the sizes were playing with in plummers talk... One 1/2" line will properly supply 6 -3/8ths lines. Or a 6in pipe will carry approx 24 sq in of air but go just 2 inches bigger to a 8in pipe now your up to 54 sq inches yup double the flo (or backflow) by a 1/3rd increase.in diamenter. so drillin out your breech hole by almost double the size shure looks tiny holdin it up to the light but youve opened up the only passage towards you and the internal components of your gun by about 10 times without pullin out the calculator. Everything is designed with a safty factor for a reason,my friend has one of those watrproof designed muzzys that the primer is placed in some little red plastic type holder that should be only used once (red holder) due to expansion im shure if you look at it ,it dont look to bad for reuse but some engineer had a reason (test till it compleatly failed) for the one time use. My TC primer does not seat compleatly to the flange in the breech plug ,but 1/2 of it is stickin out for ease of removal by the extracter. so every gun design has its own little "quirk" that might limit the breechplug hole size for safety and long term use. A 300 hp engine will last beyond 100,000 miles a 300 hp engine tricked out to 700hp has to be rebuilt every 500 miles if it makes it that far.. When your talkin 1000s of lbs of pressure 3inches from your pumpkin you better have a good "gunsmith" properly schooled in the design of that wepon . as for me im going on 7 years with no pluged breech hole misfires so with another 30 sec of cleaning time ill keep the only hole between me and the powder just the way it is..I know a few Experts in the field so ill bring it up next time i talk to them .. -
in most hunting conditions youll be ok to 150 yds the 100grins w/250 gr bullet will give ya about 20 in drop at 200 yds and I think 12in drop at 100 yds its been 5 years sence ive read up on this so i might be off on the 100 yd. hopefully youve had a tad experience with a bow to better help you understand how a muzzy round works .remember 15 years ago everyone had 3 or 4 pins to shoot to 40 yds ,thats cause the bows were slow and had a big arc, thus you needed several pins to drop the arrow into the right yardage.now bows are fast and shoot flat thus 1 pin can do easy out to 30 yds and aim a tad high and 40 is good with the same pin. Well the muzzy is the slow bow pretty flat out to 100 yds but if your planning longer shots ya better sight it in for that distance with a standard scope cause yer droppin the round in there . Mine is sighted for 150 yds ,,,,its 4in high at 50, 2 in high at 100 and as close as i can get it for 150 yds,,,,,, If ya want to do good it would be nice to have a shootin helper with low velocity wepons experiance.. that should help explaine why ya need a "several pin scope" (and rangefinder) to be consistant at long shots with a muzy/.

Well with the shopping done for the family I'm kicking back for a couple days. Its been another year for us all some great days and some down days. We've celebrated new births and morned the loss of loved ones. We've had great times at derbys, rec fishing, and sharing stories tho some might stray from the truth a tad We've shared tips, secrets, and even a few tears. AND , We've even had are normal spats and dissagrements on different things.. . . .Yup just like one big family,or L.O.U. gang. I Wish Us All a Merry Christmas , Happy New Year ,so for now well lower our guns and celebrate the Birth of Christ... the cold will pass as fast as it came and in no time we'll begin to migrate to our common summer stompin grounds hope to see ya there . ahh back in the day we had a portable 45rpm record player with a loudspeaker for fox and crows (no dogs back then) ,then came the invention of the "cassette player" boy were we ever teco guys. Now ya can buy spinnin rabbits and pocket sized callers that sound pretty good. but the good ole moulth calls always seem to Trick the educated ones from turkeys to the smartest of fox or dogs. And like mentioned the alpha males (yes i know the dec says their ant no such thing in the coyote family) are getting hudge in the southern tier and a tad bit braver when it comes to claiming a carcass. tho using a deer carcass is ileagle for baiting ill guess something like that might work pretty good to get a few togeather..but a few frozen fish remains might get their attention too if ya got a little room in yer freezer next summer..

Hmm starky pt .........Psss the dec used to put their laker stockin nets out about 200 yds south in the cove.......bout 30 years ago i was scuba diving near there and got read the riot act when i got to shore,,,but they calmed down I think ...the current normally flows counter clockways so just south of the point in 70 to 100fow should be good.

The wee hole might be engeneered that size for a reason. I would NOT recomend enlarging the hole .. best case you might get enuf backflash from the main charge to expand your primer for hard removal,,worst case you get enuf flashback to damage your wepon or your HEAD "BOOM" ..the "tip cleaners" for welding/brazing tips are very good also as mentioned but they are somewhat of a file and prolonged use "might" enlarge the hole a tad. Ive still got about 50 ft of 24 ga wire left from the 2.99 spool i bought 6 years ago (gives you a reason to hangout at Jo Anns fabric ). In 6 years ive had 2 missfires not from primers but from wet barrel. I brought the gun in from the cold cleaned good and reloaded BEFORE letting the barrell get to room temp, just enuf condensation reformed in the barrell and when i pushed the bullet down it acted like a squeege and the very thin layer of moister was all pushed into the powder which is like a sponge ......both times the wet (moistened) powder burned but i could see the cool light show of my pellets comming out the end of the barrel (they sorta spiral) Its a neat thing to see ,UNLESS THEIR IS A TROPHY BUCK LINED UP IN YOUR SIGHTS Ever sence the gun stays in the truck loaded till im done hunting for the season.... ONCE AGAIN NEVER ALTER YOUR WEPON OR THE DEAD ANIMAL MAY BE THE ONE BEHIND THE STOCK, and i dont want the woods all pooped up by some rescue squad pickin up your exploaded "pumpkin" (head) -
Once again i think i've been had by a so called friend. I spoke with Chowder about hunting his land for one last deer. Well He showed me the layout of his land from the barn yard, and told me ""The plan" for getting one last deer. Well being new to the layout and seeing the 1 gallon jug of doe urin in his special rigged back pack seemed like a good plan. As i walked down towards the end of the first pasture i noticed the jug was leaking and smelled a lot like the barn with all the cows in heat. Bout that time i hear andy hollar "good luck" and when i turned to wave thanks he stood at the Bulls barn with a 2000lb brama "big ben" with its nostrals flared like it was taking its first breath. Then the bells went off ....no not in my head but the 4 cow bells in the backpack when i stumbled. Yup my old buddy fliped the gate latch and the ground rumbled as ben ran after the sounds and aroma of bessie and that was me. I took off on a dead run (thats where you run or die) approaching a 3 ft high electric fence i knew i could clear it, whew no problem as i ran under it ,cept removing my hat exposing my bald spot in the middle of my hair. ut oh i thought bulls got weak eyes and that bald spot might resemble Bessies happy spot. I slowed as i reached the creek bottom to turn to see the bull stop for thy electric fence ,well that worked like a screamin salmon on 4 lb test line, i ran for the nearest tree ,tho my climbing skills were not up to par with the added 40lbs of weight i did manage to get to 6 ft up,when i discovered egads the bull could reach 7 ft. Thank goodness i had my new carharts on as i flew 15 ft higher in the tree. My backpack flew 20 ft to one side and the bull started to tear it up. Next thing i see is a 2000lb bull with a bell on each antler 300 ft of electric fence lighting up the woods like time square Christmass tree ,and the only thing glowing red wasnt his nose like rudolfs but something between his hind legs..Knowing my only way out of the tree was to jump i unzipped my jacket and with the grace of a 200lb flying squirrel i spread my coat and glided 25 ft straight down. Laying there like a infant waiting for its first lungs of air i notice ben has discovered his new toy was in a playfull mood and the chase was on.. I kick it in high gear towards my van at 10mph oh just about 15mph slower than big ben. As I felt his breath on my neck knowing I was about to be voilated by a 2000lb bubba. Just then a shot goes off as i pass a starlted doe and she drops ,I look up and Andys muzzleloader's still smokin he hollars "Thanks Ray" Ben got scared and ran back to the barn I jumped in the van wet pants and all (from the inside out)..and i ant never gonna help any farmer do a deer drive...

andy that swamp was frozen solid ................till i peeeeeeed in it earlier, ya know ya send me into the woods where ya saw the big bear and ya made me wear those bear bells i never saw one bear track and every deer ran to the swamp I think I got tricked. many people relate " missfires" to wet powder. Real black powder Ignites well and fast, Triple 7,and pyrodex are a little more fussy to the point pyrodex actually has a Ignition "helper" on one end that must face the primer.,And both have a hole in the middle that ant there for easy handling of the powder ,but its Main pourpose is to carry the primer flash for even ignition timing , or everyone in the woods will think their surronded by squirrel hunters with pop guns..those little "nipple pricks" are not large enuf dia for proper Ignition....................And if any of you guys think you can clean that muzzy 1 time before long term storage ya better think again repeate cleaning process 3 times over a perioud of a week and see if im missleading ya there then and only then swab "bore butter" for long term storage... -
Oh they are great ,all the fuel tax goes into mantaining the roads..to test this just drive blindfolded (sorta like our govener) when heading to NY you cantell you crossed the ny line .................... By the way you bounce off your seat ,your boat becomes airborn and your camber, and caster are out of wack. Oh I Digress shure we get all our taxes back here ya go yup they put it right there..

,I would of taken it unless their was a 12 pt on her tail,,I suppose it would be like takin a bear, something I always wanted and have a beautiful rug(wallhanging),but id be hard pressed to shoot another..But with that said every situation has its moments,it might of been a oncein a life time sighting a camera would of been cool to have specially with no snow..Bottom line someone or thing will claim it might as well be you,one (more spotted) was brought in to my meat cutter this year the guy was gonna have the hide tanned. Your call as you know and as for bad luck well watch out for black cats, cracks in sidewalks, walkin under a ladder, pickin up a penny tail side up,,as for banannas ,unless your bringing a shipment from south america i wouldnt bank on that one either..

I pulled it from mikes facebook, I heard it on the radio,as i was out on service calls (hunting) Cant say i favor any one NY team just watch all 3 (or listen)when i can. did sound ugly in the 3rd inning tho. the worst part of my day was stalking up on the big 8 pt at 60 yds with no buck tag to fill and every doe i walked to was too small, guess i dont have it in me any more to shoot a doe

when my radio reads low v my main battery is a tad from almost not starting ,happens with trollin moter at low speeds for extended time.. like hank mentioned ill vote power issues too. sometimes wire in crimp conn. or nuts will break down get brittle and not conduct full power too. even main plug could be corroding

Hey andy forgot to tell ya to keep yer eyes out for a good used tripod for camera use. I made a portable tripod with one a few years back ..I duct taped a homemade rest on top but one of those premade forend supports glued to a small pc of 1/2"ply with a "t" nut would make for a reasonable cost portable tripod... it can be lowered to 2 ft where i can shoot off it standing up or raised up for tall guys like you. -
FINNALY ya hit something with the first shot....Knowing ya better be good with the first one and ""WAITING" for the good placement can be as nerveracking as bowhunting at times...I love the long shots and tried to make some shots a sniper would cringe at this year with the 270,Guess what im saying is DON'T get overconfident in yer skills specially when ya get my age and the old eyes sorta filter out some of those smaller twigs (2 friggin inch trees too ).... Good for you ..

Hey pops looks good ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,But dont try to run dyspys with plastic rod holders itwill bit ya in the arse one day..specially that time you forget to double check yer drag and its still tight from a retrive or fight.. The lightest holder I recomend is the tightlock brand ,even those are borderline for agressive fishing trips..Just don't want ya to invest in a nice setup (rod reel) toss in another 100.00 bucks for wire, dypsy, attracter, fly, and termanal tackle(another place not to buy discount stuff)..and youll be makin your first donation to the "fish gods" sooner than youll think. everything on my boat is rummage sale or used so i dont have much research info for ya .. Please do yerself a favor place a "wanted add" on this site i have the "big johns holders" and know the cisco's are good stuff too. I have a brand new okuma 30 and some used dyspy rods and a couple tightlocks laying around if times are tuff and ya need to save a few bucks, ill bet I have a fly or two and some other stuff to help ya get started ,or back in the game. but ya better pm me asap as ill be scarse after Christmass..
