Tall Tails

I run a 4212 as my GPS. I purchased it because I could add the radar and possible the Fishfinder functions if I needed in the future. I am intersted in the Radar function for the Garmin that allows you lock on to a target and watch there every move including direction and speed! (i.e. your fishing buddy in his boat) I would recommend stepping to the 24HD however if you really want to see incoming storm fronts as it will give you more power. I do have a friend who is running 2 4212 units one as his fishfinder and one as his GPS. I like the buttons and the screen size myself. I think the mapping software is good enough for what I use it for. Garmin will only use garmin mapping software so that is a small drawback if you are looking at different mapping software packages. I have mine fully intergrated with my Raymarine autopilot and my Furuno 585 fishfinder. I have been on a boat with the Garmin 24 fishfinder and works just fine for our application you will learn what you are looking at. Much of the negative comments on Garmin fishfinding came from the saltwater guys who were fishing over 2000ft of water. But for us it will be more then what you need. BINGO!! The whole collapse of the Pro Am and the cup chase is very disappointing. There are quite a few people who sacraficed a lot to chase the cup. Then to take away the original cup? Seriously? So if and when the NHL starts to play again are they going to have a new cup and just scrap the old one? Some people may not care about history but I sure do. No more will we watch strategy with team strengths decide the Best of the Best. Guys like Vince and Jerry chase each other down by fishing to there strengths wether it be Kings or Browns. Or watch Burkie figure out how he is going to average 184 pts per day to win the cup. (For those who never took the time to figure it out, that is how many points it took to win on average over the last 12 years.) The only way we will see this come back to what it was is to have independently run tournaments with a common theme. I hope one day we can all look at a series that has the history of what was the Pro Am series. I am sure a county or two will still have a 12 fish 2 day tourney but with the current rules and structure in place it will be what it will be. Brian

Matt pretty much summed it up. Dont get me wrong Salmon only tournaments are very attractive. But they will never show who the BEST are. It takes different skill sets for the various fish we persue. Heck it takes a skill set to fish each individual tournament setup. 12 fish 2 day events show that a team has those skill sets to catch there fish. I have enjoyed the 1 day shootout events as much as any pro am however there is a certain amount of luck that needs to happen to win one. The killer for the pro am has always been and always will be the COMMUNICATION rule. One other thing I believe the countys lost sight of was participation. I said all last year as part of the pro am commitee and was pretty much ignored... I would rather see 70 boats at 500.00 dollar entry or even 450.00 for that matter then 30 at 650.00 or 800.00. These tournys are about participation and bringing dollars to the ports that are the host. We seemed to have lost sight of all that. NONE of us are going to get rich winning one 20,000 dollar pot. Nobody is going to make a living fishing these tourneys. It is a simple fact with our fishery right now. Sure we all would like to have an opportunity at being a "PRO" fisherman but the fact remains the economy is not going to support that right now. By the way I am not begruging any tournament series or any one one tournament. Just trying to paint a picture between tournament structures and participation. It takes a GIANT effort to pull off a quality tourny! Ok I will get off my band wagon now and prepare to take my lumps! Brian

This was my argument to the uneducated...

Tim, I think you know where I am going with this. Come spring there will be very few BTs to stock in the state let alone Lake O. Fisheries managers are going to have to make a tough choices about who gets BTs and who doesnt. I am not sure people realize that what is in the Rome hatchery is all we have in the state and those fish get spread out to not just lake O. We had a short discussion last night about your end of the lake. One local Capt from the east end said you guys did not need them as you dont target them. I did defend the west end dont worry. Vince, We did talk about that as well. Dan Bishops feeling was there is not very good habitat at the Oak for good natural spawning. He did feel like there was some at 18 mile but he feels the pressure there hurts it. He also compared the Niagara to the Oswego that there is obviously no spawning habitat there for them at all. He thinks Oswego gets a decent number of fish from the pens and maybe some confused fish that thought they were in the Salmon river. There was High praise for the Pens and the volunteers from all sides last evening. A niagara river net pen may not be a bad idea.. Brian

Vince, 90% of the fish that showed at the hatchery were hatchery fish. There feeling was the nauturals hit the river in huge numbers very early, even before good water temperature. Very few showed themselves at the hatchery. They are doing a small study on survivability of the naturals vs hatchery with an emphasis on the thiamene treatments. Obviously the naturals do very without the thiamene treatment and the hatchery fish have to be treated in order to survive. Based on the outcome of this study they may start taking wild females in the future to improve the genetics. They believe strongly that large females were targeted in the low water and it is contributing greatly to the amount of females showing at the raceways. On a side note I was amazed at the number of jacks I saw in the ladder last night.

ELOSTA had its monthly meeting at the hatchery last evening and some of the guys from the DEC joined us for a little Q and A on the current state of the hatchery situation. Here are some of the numbers and they are current as of 830pm last night. I would like to thank Andy Groulik (hatchery manager) for the numbers. 2.5 million Chinook eggs have been taken so far. Target is between 3.5 and 4 million They have spawed 2800 chinoooks to get to that number. The stocking projection is 1.75 million so they have enough they just would like to collect there buffer. 1.25 million Coho salmon eggs have been taken. They will have no problem getting the coho eggs. 3200 cohos have been spawed to get to that number. The Chinook egg situation is a little funny. One would think with all the fish this year it would be no problem getting eggs but Andy told us that the fish are really only trickling into the hatchery on a daily basis. There are more then enough males showing up but they are lacking the females. They think that that because of the low water fisherman have been able to target the larger females more easily. They do think they will hit there target of eggs it may just take a little more effort then a weeks time. They have opened the fish ladder in Dexter and are currently looking to take eggs from the Black river fish. They got about 208,000 eggs out of the black river just yesterday. Also a little side note Canada is having zero issues getting there salmon eggs also the river to there Chinook hatchery is totally closed to fishing. After all is said and done they will have about 76,000 cohos to release. That is what is left after all the issues last fall with eye up. As far as the current BT stocking predictions they cant nail that down yet as we will have to wait and see in the spring but stocking will be down significantly. The Rome die off really made things worse. The regional fishery managers will meet to discuss where those BTs will get stocked. My OWN OPINION does eastern lake Erie really need BTs, do you guys really target them? Just asking dont shoot the messanger. ON a positive note the have extra steelhead about a few 100,000 that they will be able to stock. As far as the water flow issue they feel like they did a better job this year holding the base flow at 185 till they needed the water vs 2007 were they had it as low as a 100. I agree seemed they learned from there mistake. As far as the natural spawn they are attributing this years great run of naturals to not having river flows over 2000cfs during those year class years. That was a real quick over view of what I wrote down last evening if you guys have anymore questions please chime in and I will see if I have the answer if not I can send out an email and get it for you. Oh and I forgot the best way to learn the roads in the area is to go dragging! And I dont mean racing! Find a sizeable fresh road kill hook it up to about a 40ft stout rope and drive as fast as you can around the new area. Gives a whole new meaning to going for ice cream! (one piece of advise if and when it gets caught on the guard rail be sure the rope isnt wrapped around your hand..) Oh and an introduction to the new neibors might be tieing up a fresh kill under there vehicle and let them drag it around. Nothing like the smell of burning flesh to say hello!

Well I think Labatts is a classy beer. If you really want to fit in you need to to get a 30 pack of PBR and or a keg of Genny Cream ale(My personal favorite at deer camp!). Oh and also on move day be sure to start your old 4 stroke ice auger and make sure it runs before putting it in the garage. The ice auger also works well in the summer time keeping the skeeters away! I had a few more ideas for you but they may not be appropriate for a family message board!

They guy that shot a deer out from under my buddy on saturday night and laughed about the youth season being a great excuse for his rifle shots loves the new season.... This is exactly what we thought would happen. Oh and encon is nowwhere to be found exept on the salmon river handing out tickets to fisherman on the rivers busiest weekend of the year. Thanks again New York you nailed it yet again... Yea this was public land but I predicted this would happen and I nailed it. In 8 years of bowhunting public land this has never happened. Funny how it happened saturday evening and the guy when confronted just laughed and said hey whos gonna catch me.....Yea we reported it but I am sure nothing will come of it. Total Crap!! I am all for kids hunts I take kids out for the early duck season every year but this one doesnt have enough regulation...We also dont have enough encon officers to properly enforce this one.. Sorry but its the truth!

He could also have his wife do the walk retrieve if he has enough room on his boat for a few steps. Few steps back and retrieve while walking forward. This is how we do most of our copper and wire rods on both the tourney team and charters. It works very well and puts an even pressure on the fish. [ Post made via Android ]

Had the pleasure of fishing on this boat yesterday! It will make somebody a very sweet ride!

With the Blood run it is a smaller diameter but it weighs more per foot so that combined with the diameter it has a greater sink rate. I figure its about 10 more feet.
