30 pound mono plain and simple has always worked for me during flea season. If running spoons use a 12 to 20 pound fluro leader. If running flashers and flys tie the mono straight to the flashers or paddles.

Need a little help. We are heading up to Fairhaven in two weeks for our summer vacation. I always do well on the Kings and Lakers but this year I would like to target steelhead. Just curious what a decent set up would be to run for them. I know I mark plenty of them out in the 300 and 400 foot depths. There usually hanging out in the 60 foot depth range. I run 4 riggers two coppers and two dipsys. I also run cheaters on the riggers. I can never get the steelies to hit. Any suggestions????

Lake Trout out of Oswego

So I guess then a true measurement of where your torpedoes are would be to drop them down while in neutral (and flat calm seas) and see if the depth on the riggers matches your sonar. Then engage and slowly bring up the speed and see if the depth changes. I agree with what your saying. The only thing that makes me question this theory is that when I'm running my 4 torpedoes, if i have guys move quickly to one side of the boat I can see the opposite side torpedoes lift up and down. It kind of looks like a small mm instead of a straight line. Same thing in big waves, you can see the torpedoes rocking back and forth with the waves. -

This is a good discussion!! I have a lowrance LCX26c. I can see all 4 of my 20lb torpedoes, even when they are down over a 100 feet. I can also watch the fish "streak" in and behind a torpedo. Most of the time I can point to the rod and it will fire instantaneously when the streaker gets to the torpedo. If sonar is only measuring distance, how can you watch this happen in real time and see the fish hit?? I'm not trying to be a jerk, I have been trying to figure this out for years. -

Great lakes planers made the rocket launcher system. It has made a HUGE difference. No more rods in the way while fishing, frees up the cuddy. Plus it comes with the otter boat reels and side rocket tubes to use with the boards. I put the top spot lights in myself after the rocket launcher system was put in. I use to do a lot of night and early morning king trolling in September. They came in real handy when trolling close to shore with all the drift boats out of the salmon river that had no running lights on.

Not sure if this is the right thing to do or not but the past two years I have been setting my riggers with my sonar. I'll put the sub troll probe down first, find temp then use the sonar to set the other 3 riggers around the probe rigger. I also move the the riggers around once I start finding targets and bait on the sonar. It seems to work better for me then trying to figure out the depths with blowback in the equation. I have been running the 16 lb torpedoes on my big Jon Riggers. Some days when the currents are really bad using the sonar to see where the riggers are parked really makes life easy for me. -

SD vs flasher
steelfire replied to super_hawk2012's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
Second what Broke off said. Nothing beats them in the summer and fall. Just look at the results from the last couple years of the LOC derby top 10 salmon winners. That says it all right there. -

This summer both out of Fairhaven and Oswego the Lakers were very plenty full for me. At times they were a pain in the neck getting into my king spreads. I'm not a pro troller at all, but it seemed it didn't matter what I had on or what speed you were at. I could target them with a peanut and cowbell set up or drop a mag spoon down and we were locked. The picture I attached was a 20 pound laker taken on a flasher fly on a dippsy. It was down around 100 feet over 200 feet of water. Find the cold water and you will find the lakers. You should be able to see them with your new Lowrance. I have an older Lowrance and can watch them streak up and chase the rigger weights. Its cool to watch -
Spring Casting,Bottom Bouncing
steelfire replied to reillym's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Try casting spoons around the creek mouths in the spring. Kastmasters and cleos work good for me. 20 to 40 feet of water out of Oswego is mostly flat rocky bottom with a few humps thrown in. in the spring spring I troll mostly to the east of the oswego river usually 5 to 20 feet of water. Thats where the bait is. There are a few rocks in shallow. -
I have a 9.9 kicker mounted on the left side of my stearn. And two coolers in the boat. With the foil, I just keep trimming the motor up until the boat levels out. I no longer have problems listing to one side

it was an easy fix. my boat will now plane at 4 mph. its crazy. It also pushes the bow down a little more and it cuts into waves better. The last boat I owned I put trim tabs on and it caused problems with my sonar. The lowrance tech told me that sometimes air bubbles around the transducer can cause funky readings. And that was what the trim tabs did. just my 2 cents as an Islander owner

StingRay ADK, I put this on my 19.5 islander. It made a world of difference getting on plane faster and steering is 100 times better. Increased my speed by 10 mph!! StingRayâ„¢ XRIII Senior A revolutionary base material dramatically reduces drag Gets you on plane 50% faster Increases fuel efficiency No-drill installation This all-new hydrofoil is finished with Speed-XP, a revolutionary base material that actually binds a microthin layer of moisture to the surface that dramatically reduces hydrodynamic drag. No drilling is needed to install. Once installed, it will get you on plane 50% faster while reducing bow rise and increasing fuel efficiency by up to 40%. For motors 75-300 hp.
