pier fishing the genny
Fish Junkie replied to jkarol24's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Lake side kremer. There was some nice off color water yesterday but today it was already getting pretty clear. Never had any problems on Charlotte side other than an occasional annoying pedestrian LOL. Seriously, you do have to watch your casting etc. on that side with the foot traffic. On another note. I saw on the news that they are goning to be closing this pier this fall for renovation, however, there are no signs of that yet. -

There was some more productive water on the Charlotte side the last couple mornings. went 1 for 2 yesterday morning, 1 for 2 last night and 2 for 2 this morning. 3 kings and a nice brown. My poor father had the dropsies yesterday morning and lost 3. Most fish on lures but lost a screamer yesterday morning and got spooled last night on egg sac rigs.... -
Water was clear this past tuesday evening. Could see bottom out til about 10' fow. Took 8 bass, 2 big northern and got bit off a few other times by the toothy ones. 8-14' fow. Flipping plastics on the weed edges.

Bass and pike on the outside weed edges in 12-18 foot of water.

One of the voids I have been longing to fill in my angling career has been a trip to the mystical Smoky Mountains in search of wild and native trout. I was truly fortunate to have visited Smoky Mountains National Park this past week. While it was a family oriented trip that my wife and I took with my brother, his wife, my brother-in-law and his girl friend, I was able to escape a little while onto a couple streams armed with a 3 wt. pack rod and a box full of flies. I am still flushed with awe as to the beauty and surrealism of this wonderful ecosystem. Rhododendron and mountain laurel woodlands and clear mountain streams choked with moss covered boulders. Upon close inspection the forest floor reveals a multitude of almost alien-like fungi in a multitude of colors and shapes. Early mornings and evenings in the park also awaken the fauna of the area leaving anticipation and surprise around every corner. The trout are just a bonus.....

Which Finger Lake would you recommend?
Fish Junkie replied to felixjayce's topic in Finger Lakes Discussion
Not sure I would recomend Keuka if he is looking for bigger fish. Plenty of action yes, but lots of 2-4 lb. clones. Seneca or Cayuga for consistantly larger fish.... -
LOL, was waiting for someone to spot those. What was i to do? My wife wanted me to finish the leftovers from a party we had not long ago...

It is pretty addicting isn't it? I have been using these spoons from Cabelas: http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/standard-item.jsp?_DARGS=/cabelas/en/common/catalog/item-link.jsp_A&_DAV=MainCatcat21404-cat21406-cat21436&id=0037369121690a&navCount=1&podId=0037369&parentId=cat21436&masterpathid=&navAction=push&catalogCode=9IS&rid=&parentType=index&indexId=cat21436&hasJS=true I have been doing well with the glow color. The jointed model have a great action to them and for the price right now you can't beat them. I have been fishing the 1 and 1.5 ounce models but picked up a couple 2 oz. ones in case there is a breeze....

try posting this in the bass or walleye forum might get more response

Well, after the luck we had last week, I found my way back down to Keuka for the weekend. While I had a punch list of chores to do at our cabin, I was able to sneak out for a couple hours last night before dark with my wife and then again this morning solo for a bit. Was able to find some fish but nothing as consistant as last weekend. I went 1 for 2 last evening and found the couple strikes I had were a ways off the bottom and appeared to be suspended fish. This morning was much the same but had problems with the dropping fish. I got several what I thought were good hooksets into fish only to have them come unbuttoned after a few head shakes and rolls. The one fish I did land today was a surprise that hit maybe about 20-30 ft. below the boat on a retrieve. The fish fish immediately headed to the top after being hooked and as the line approached the surface I expected to see a bright silver landlock or rainbow hurl into the air. Well, the fish got airborne alright, but it was bronze and not silver! Managed to lip him at the boat and get some quick measurements of him. Was between 21 and 22", my largest smallmouth yet. After that the sun got higher and I called it a morning.

1 oz. heads, but if there is a breeze and you start drifting, it might require someting even heavier.

We didn't tip the jigs with anything. Just a plastic fluke or tube. We actually did a bit better with the jigging spoons. Just keep mixing it up until you find the right combination. Good Luck

Do you ever catch any of the silver fish doing this?

After some discussion a couple weeks ago on another forum about trolling/jigging techniques on the finger lakes, I was convinced to give jigging a whirl. Armed with a couple bass baitcasting outfits rigged with braid, florocarbon leaders, and a handful of jigging spoons and jigs, my cousin and I entered Keuka lake via the Guyanoga access ramp this morning. At the mouth of the creek we were greated by a blue heron perched on a decaying tree hunkered down as if annoyed by the morning rain. We passed a couple bass anglers fishing the weedline and then started our drift in abot 80 f.o.w. It took maybe a half hour before i hooked the first one, and then after the second and third, we realized that the first one wasn't just a fluke, and that we were actually doing something right. What a blast! We ended the morning 8 for 11. Big fish was about 5 lbs. and we caught almost equal amounts on both plastics on 1 oz. lead heads and the Cabela's 'Real Image' double jointed jigging spoons. It was truly an awakening to a born and bred Lake Ontario troller. I am already thinking about trying this on the big pond! LOL

http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/98619539.html Potential world record brown trout caught off Racine By Paul A. Smith of the Journal Sentinel July 16, 2010 |(53) Comments Fishing the waters off Racine Friday morning, Roger Hellen of Franksville landed a 41.5-pound brown trout. The fish is more than a whopper - it's a potential world record. Hellen was taking part in Salmon-A-Rama, the long-standing fishing contest run in Racine by Salmon Unlimited of Wisconsin, Inc. He caught the fish trolling in the Lake Michigan waters near Wind Point in northern Racine County. "Unreal," said Hellen, 38, and a veteran Lake Michigan angler. "But if you fish out here often enough, you know almost anything is possible." The fish was identified as a brown trout by Cheryl Peterson, a Department of Natural Resources fisheries technician working the Salmon-A-Rama weigh-in tent. The DNR stocks two strains of brown trout in Lake Michigan - domestic and Seeforellen. Hellen's fish appears to be a Seeforellen, said Peterson. Tissue samples were taken by the DNR to age and assess the genetics of the fish. The Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame and the International Game Fish Association list the world record brown trout as a 41 lbs. 7 oz. ( 18.7956 kilograms) fish caught Sept. 9, 2009 in the Manistee River, Michigan. Hellen's fish was taken to Brossman's Meat Market in Racine so it could be weighed on a certified scale. If the weight (41 pounds, 8 ounces) holds up, it would be a world record for the species. The photo below was taken by Salmon Unlimited member Mary Lee Hetland and shows Hellen holding the brown trout on the Salmon-A-Rama grounds near the Racine harbor. We'll have more on this breaking story later today.

COHOS ! Well can't report any derby fish or record setting days but just wanted to share a first we had on the boat this morning. 2 salmon on the same rod at the same time. Had a Mt. Dew spinny parked off the ball and slid a stinger alewife pattern as a free slider down the line. Rod fires and drag peeled. Worked the fish for a bit and as the fish make it's way to the surface we see multiple flashes. Sure enough double on 1 rod. as i was playing the fish, one decides to run near the wire and thats were it got interesting. Lets just say we ended up retying several rigs after landing the fish. Not as big of an accomplishment as if they we each 20 lb. kings but but at least we can say we have done it before. Both fish were chunky 10 lb. class cohos. Aside from those fish we boated 4 other steelhead a small king and had a couple other rips. Fished 100-240 ft. off Sandy Ck. this morning. Like other reports, no consistant patterns, just about everything took a shot. The Ho's Some of the steel

Ray, The creek has no significant brush piles or log jams from Hammonsport-pleasant Valley rd. down to the lake. Have fished that stretch the last few seasons. As a matter of fact I think there is only a single tree crossong the stream in that entire stretch. They went through with a dozer about 3 seasons ago. Stream is pretty much a straight shot from behind the winery to behind the old Mercury plant on the south edge of the village. There is several large limestone boulder diggers behind the winery (now Mercury) and above the Hammondsport-Pleasant Valley Rd. bridge that I believe were placed there during that same time they went through the stream (2 or 3 years ago?). Should check it out and while your there, mark that tree for me for bow season. I will let you keep your 10.00 bucks.
