    Dead bass

Bass fishing seems to have become one big video game on the water. Sigh. The outdoors has always been a refuge for me. I'm pleased to share (obliged, actually), but chose to abstain during periods of intense pressure...basically the whole summer. I will fish away from the crowds and catch less fish to relax more. I'm not even taking my Lund to the ADK when we're up for two weeks in late September. Kayak fishing or bust. I've gone that route the past three years and not regretted it for an instant.
  2. Why'd you white out the lure that you used to smash the king? It wasn't one of those X-rated lures was it? Tell the truth!
  3. Condolences! Alan was a gentleman and contributed greatly to the sport. He will be missed.
  4. Brian, do you know whether Tim is using the same transparent covering as Big Al? You probably remember that I demo'd some of these as he was going through vendors trying to optimize the product. The first couple he sent me, the plastic covering got brittle and shredded over the winter, whether it was stored inside or out. But Al was really trying to make a great product and he replaced them for me as he updated vendors. This last round I've had for five years and it doesn't poke easily (ie, no hooks in the leg while leaning against it), it stays transparent, and it's still in great shape. Whatever he settled on, it's the cat's meow (or cat's a$$ as Scotty would say).
  5. If it was tuna (east coast) we were talking about, the guys would laugh at your 30 lb teeny, weeny fish. If it was flyfishing Wyoming, those 20 lb kings would be the trophy of a lifetime. There's no inherent value in 30 lb kings. It's all what you make of the experience and the tools that you use to get it done. I'm glad to see great fishing. Even with the downshift in size, there's still no harder fishing fish in the lake. I also think that the exceptional fishing has led to better recruitment...of fishermen. And kids. I've never seen so many pictures of happy fishermen than this year.
  6. The first thing I would do is check the battery connections. Steel wood and dielectric grease. Second would be to look at whether the transducer cracked over the winter - Lowrance stock skimmer transducers are notorious for this. In general, my transducers work as well at the end of the season as at the beginning, but they get scoured during runs too. Hit them with Dawn if you're unsure.
  7. I have checked with my State Farm agent several times to make sure that my homeowners policy DOES cover items off my boat, however as I found out when a tree fell on a small trailer I used to haul wood, neither the homeowners or vehicle policies cover trailers. You definitely need a separate policy for those. And of course a boat policy itself is a separate thing, too.
  8. We have two inline swivels; one from the wire to the 50 lb test mono and one from the mono to a fluorocarbon leader. No twists, but at least in our hands we learned the hard way that we can't run 11" flashers and meat on them. At a 2 1/2 setting, they were tangling with each other - from opposite sides! We usually run a four diver spread and have never seen tangles this bad. We are now running two slides and two mag dispys. No idea why, but only a fool argues with chaos.
  9. I don't think they stopped making them, but instead the latest model is the UHD2. There's always money to be saved when a company rolls out the next iteration lol. I have friends who run these and IMHO they are great units.
  10. There are good budget trolling rod options from Shimano (TDR) and Okuma (Classic Pro GLT), and linecounter Daiwa (Sealine) and Okuma (Magda) reels show up used here all the time. You should be able to put together a combo for <$100 easily if you are willing to go that route.
  11. I can't even imagine. I tried to unhook a 35 lb carp from my kayak earlier this year and nearly flipped. That's crazy.
  12. Don't trust purchases off Amazon. Go directly to the manufacturer.
  13. Proving for a third time that a laker fisherman can catch salmon when he has a mind to. Although there's a rumor that you wanted to switch to laker fishing at 10 am? Nice job, buddy!
  14. Them's some big kings...they must be moving in, since the Sandy Shootout on Saturday was won with just over 80 lbs for four fish. Great turnout this year - fifty boats fished the tournament. You guys have been on fire this year. You didn't fish get in though? Or did you register under a different name? Anyway, nice fish. And that last picture is great. I don't know if he's happy or letting out a primal scream lol.
  15. I've heard the same tale from multiple anglers lately. A buddy of mine who's in the know told me that a bunch of fake terminal tackle got released imitating bona fide premier brands like Spro. Now there's stuff showing up from Cape Cod tuna and stripers to Lady O kings where split rings, swivels and connectors are failing. The stuff is apparently made from metal that's about as strong as baked potatoes.
  16. Since we're on the subject of electronic monitoring systems, I'm going to make a pitch for a freezer alarm. Nothing to do with boating, but a buddy of mine lost everything in his chest freezer a few weeks ago and a couple of other guys on here have had the same thing happen in the not-so-distant past. I purchased a Temperature Stick monitor for my chest freezer two weeks ago. It works on Wifi and is easy to install. You set up alarms for temperature, humidity, or power loss (since these things don't work without power lol) and receive text messages in or off app with the option of email alerts to you or a designee. The sensor sends a report to the app once an hour, more often if you want. With the storms this week and Tommy and I being in Cape Cod, it was interesting to get notification that the unit hadn't checked in for three consecutive cycles and to see once we had power back how warm the freezer got (it went from 2 to 10 degrees in four hours). The thing cost $140, but there are some cheaper options on Amazon too. I figure you get what you pay for and based on the reviews chose to go with the Temperature Stick. So far, so good.
  17. Based on jigging the salt, single hook stainless trailers and reduced spoon profile in deeper water will increase your odds, as will a stiff rod and of course braided line. You can't drive it home hard enough. The lighter the jig or spoon, the easier time you will have setting the hook too. The learning curve is half the fun.
  18. It's funny that Tommy and I were all about the riggers on Sunday, without a diver hit to show for three hours trolling. Different day, different presentation. Even though we were fishing in tight for browns (and caught one 14.5 lbs, but somebody wasn't in the LOC), we still caught a few salmon.
  19. I may have to pull the Lund down there at some point and leave Nothing But Net at the dock. We are headed to the Cape on Friday to pursue stripers and tuna, and most of the rods that we use for that (all built by yours truly) should serve double-duty for Lady O kings. I will reach out when we get back.
  20. Nicely done! I think you set up near us at one point; we were actually wondering whether you were a DEC boat checking rods until we saw the drift sock come out.
  21. The cores are gone.
  22. Mason RediCore and Cortland Kerplunk 27 lb ten color. Free to a good home. Pick up in Rush, NY or Sandy Creek Marina, Hamlin.
