Fishing net recommendations?
Gator replied to pjprod's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
Beckman, extendable handle. We don't use the rubber, tangle-free netting though. Just the standard coated stuff. I've heard mixed opinions on the rubber with big fish (they're heavy). And it's rare for us to bury a hook in the standard netting. We used to have Ranger nets, which are cheaper but bent much more easily. Then we went Beckman and never looked back. -
Sandy on Labor Day
Gator replied to dickey's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Opposite for us. Yesterday we could do no wrong. Today was a slow pick with a triple crown - 3 salmon, 3 browns, 3 hours fishing. Spent an hour cleaning spider poop off the dash (I love Tilex) and getting her ready to be pulled out and detailed later this week. For those of you traveling up the creek, there's some "new" logs that have shown up on the bottom with the low water, in unexpected places. I trimmed my engine up, but still nicked a couple even in the channel. And those standing deadwood by the entrance to Bruce's old marina at the bridge are going to fall all the way across the creek when they go! Hopefully they'll break up and be washed away by next Spring. Tight lines! -
What fishfinders does everyone run ?

With the South blow this past few days, the browns are in tight from 20-40 ft. That could change in a heartbeat though.

Man, that sucks. I've watched lots of places go the same way, and there's one thing for sure. There's nothing safe unless you own it, and then you'd better hope that you have some protection or you could end up with a townhouse 30 yards off your property line.

I fished my buddy's off the Cape last weekend and it's outstanding for the price. He got his from Walmart online. Be sure to go with the pro package. I think he said low 400s for price.

We beat up on them this morning. Riggers above 50' and mag wire divers at 80-100 out, with cream Jake 45 spoons leading the way...and same as last time I was out, the "brown" spoons caught salmon and the "salmon" spoons caught browns. The water was COLD, 42 degrees down 50' in 80 fow. Lots of streakers early, then a pick the last hour, done at 10 am. I think we have one last trip in us, then it's on to the chaos of September, trying to get everything done all at once before bow starts. I love the October 1st start, but man it compresses preparation time.

You know that phone number got sold for big $$ a couple times? I think they took it off the market, but I'm not sure. Who'd have thought?

Sandy Creek Hamlin
Gator replied to Picker Pines's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Sorry I didn't see this until now. Don't be afraid to scoot inside. We picked up an equal mix of browns and salmon yesterday in 60 fow. Surprisingly, the salmon were coming off the riggers on the cream glow Jake 45 meant for the browns and the browns were coming on Mag NBK Stingrays meant for the salmon. I guess the fish get to decide the flavor of the day! -

Both of the boats in the video look like an awesome dance floor, but the first one with the teak trim and the black floor (mats?) is suweeeet... -

Sandy Creek 8/4
Gator replied to Jeremy Goodison's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
What a great day! Today I'm going to do something a bit different, hike up into a wilderness area in Colorado to catch 8" brook trout on dry flies. Yeah, they don't scream the drag like kings, but the scenery is unparalleled. And like you with your daughter, we'll be trying to put some smiles on the young ones' faces. Save a few kings for me when I get back! -

We recently had a Gen2 Touch that I'd purchased on eBay go bad...I'm fairly sure I bought somebody else's problem. Anyway, Lowrance offered to replace it with a Gen 3 for $300. So, rather than scrap the unit entirely, I went ahead and paid for the upgrade. I was surprised when I got the new unit from Lowrance to find an HDS Carbon in the box. I'm not sure whether that was intentional and their pricing structure simply didn't reflect the newer Carbon units or whether I just got lucky. Either way, the installation and setup was easy, literally plug and play which amazed me, and the unit has performed flawlessly this summer. We don't have it coupled to an autopilot. However, it seems fairly simple to update the firmware. I'm sorry to hear that you got a dud.

First off, I want to congratulate Brian on a well-earned win. And second, I want to commend him for adding .01 lb to our tally so that we didn't end up weighing in at 69.69...this is a family friendly fishery, after all (kidding about the 0.01 lb - it was actually 69.7). Here's a brief recap: we didn't have a chance to scout prior to the Shootout, but it sounded like there was a good bite anywhere from 200+ so that's where we sat down at 5:15 am. With only two of us in the boat and the tough currents, we were busy for the next four hours with a near constant stream of rips, a dreaded copper-wire tangle, and the general Chinese fire drill entailed by an epic bite. We worked from 200 - 400 fow, angling so as to try to minimize the effect of the current, generally making NW-SW passes as the surface current ripped to the east. Wire mag divers out 160 were hot, as was a rigger parked at 71 ft. Copper accounted for a few, but not as many as I'd expected, and after we lost a 400 ft copper to the tangle, that was it for them. As with most, we had an unbelievable number of fish in the 12-15 lb range, and our box consisted of one 20+, a couple of mid-high teens and a 15 lb runt that we couldn't upgrade. I think we finished 16th. It hurt us not to have a third man on board, and I suspect that with the full moon we needed to stay on them later than we did - we pulled it at noon. But it was an awesome day of fishing and seeing folks at the weigh in so - mission accomplished! Finally, a big shout out to all of the organizers who made this year's Shootout such a success! You guys rock!

Yep, another one bites the dust. Bottom of the lake. Anybody have an extra probe to get me through to the end of the season, when I'll put an X4D on the boat? You can pm me or shoot me an e-mail at [email protected]

x2, but we like Shimano Talora rods with Twili tips. 8' MH2 rods on the inside running Dipsy Mags on a 1 1/2 setting and 9' MH2 rods on the outside running Dreamweaver Deeper Divers size 5 on a 2 1/2 setting. You can't beat Saltist reels.
