  1. I didn't think it was possible to catch too many lakers? Duh...something shiny, num-num-num-num-num Nothin' but Net will be off Sandy tonight, give us a shout on 72,
  2. I know a guy who's right at the top of the OCD leaderboard
  3. What zackblain said. Those two lakes can be like hidden gems...with a steep learning curve. And have your buddy give me a shout when he comes down.
  4. We ended up with a couple browns yesterday over 200 fow, one shallow 135' on the wire 2 1/2 setting, the other deep 100' of cable on the rigger. Strange days are these...
  5. Hey Kevin, Bass fishing on Honeoye is stupid simple, but they tend to be on the small size. Throwing a Senko around the deep weed edges is a Honeoye standard. After dark the lake shines, though, and that's when my biggest fish have come. The walleye are more difficult...stick baits in the spring and some trolling, jigs and leeches in late June...after that?? The biggest problem has been intense algae blooms the past few years, with all of the problems that entails, including some toxin worries from the blue-green algae. Honeoye is also known for having bluegills with shoulders, but there has been crossbreeding with punkinseed it seems, and this time of year the fish can be grubby. Ice fishing is generally good, especially early ice. All in all, it's a great lake though. I hope he enjoys it! Keith
  6. I heard there were some browns caught deep yesterday, too. Which port are you fishing?
  7. I was out last night...what whaler1 said. Lots of current, though, pushing the cables to the West. I needed 1.8 mph traveling East and 2.8 mph going West to hit it right. Three kings and a brown between 130-240, two of them were skippies, KOS and 12" SDs.
  8. Options are great if they drive prices down. My feeling is that the only bargains to be had will be in the "bins" that Cabelas is so famous for, and you'd need the luck of an Irishman to find something useful. I can't find an ad for the Cabelas Cheektowaga store grand opening, but there's another store that's opening in a Southern state at the end of the month, and their online ad (link at the Cabelas site) didn't blow me away. Maybe we'll see something in the Sunday paper, but I don't expect much. Frankly, it's easier to order stuff on line than to drive up to an hour...that's $30 in fuel alone, back and forth...and the selection on line is almost infinite. Can I find John King's meat heads at Cabelas? What about BFuller spoons? Heck, Gander didn't even have a single monofilament or fluorocarbon that was over 30 lb test to use for leaders. I don't expect much better from Cabelas. I guess if you just want to go shopping for the experience, it'd be okay.
  9. It isn't just you, we had the same experience a few weeks ago. A couple boats (not the whole fleet, but it wasn't the Shootout that day, either) were pounding the fish around us and we couldn't buy a hit. Judging from how weak the hits can be when trolling and the amount of current in the lake this year, I think that maybe we're just not feeling them well enough? I'll be interested to hear from anyone who manages to figure then out better. We do okay off the Niagara Bar in the spring, but haven't cracked the code for those 90' fish in the main lake yet.
  10. We ran a couple of Shimano heavy action TDR rods with our inside divers this past weekend and they were okay, but we all agreed that there seemed to be too much tension retrieving them, either clean or when there was a fish on. I think that the rods are too stiff and that the sharp angle that the wire bends at the tip, even with a Twili, puts pressure on the drag making it harder to reel. It's interesting that Scott says his medium action rods worked well...that would fit. So, I'd advise staying away from short, heavy action rods. And I ordered two Talora 8' dipsy rods on Sunday.
  11. Every year it's a new game. Last year, you guys were sitting on twin 29 and 31 lb salmon not an hour into the shootout. This year it was bottom dredging to get into the money. Good job making the smart choice...we stuck with our plan and went down in flames. Shoulda, woulda, coulda...
  12. Less leader resulted in fewer hook ups....no shock absorber. Too much though and I think you lose some of the "magic" of copper. Electric? Undulations? No clue, but it works. We settled on 15-20'.
  13. Ouch, now you guys have me worried. We're running two single axis and two dual axis, and I was planning to switch the remaining Berts over next year. Maybe I'll wait until the final verdict. I know a guy (who just admitted on another thread that he's not actually perfect, BTW ) who has gone the whole route on his boat. He won't be happy if they start to crap the bed. And you wouldn't like him when he gets angry
  14. Slow, slow, slow. We hit a teenager @ ~370 fow on a NBK Spin Doctor off the wire, 200' Mag Dispy, then a small steelhead at the same depth. We lost a good rip in 400 fow and finally ended up on the death troll into 150' where we caught our "11 o'clock bite" final king (21 lb) on a white 11' Spin Doc running meat 80' down. Did anybody fish way, way out?
  15. One of our guides up in Canada said, "Pay attention, you only get to see this once.". He then threw a small walleye into the air where, unbeknownst to us an eagle was circling. You can guess the rest...right out of the air! Birds of prey are so cool...
  16. I'm not local anymore, but Keuka isn't Lake Erie; I don't think that there's enough traffic to warrant a cleaning station. Heck, there're only launches at the very ends of the lake, with lots of miles in between. Your best bet may be to take a cleaning board, bags and a knife with you.
  17. Lots and lots of fish came up through the ice this year...
  18. I posted results from 7/5 in another thread. Six hours jigging, four fish...one of them small and the other a bass. We couldn't find them...
  19. We stroked it both days. On the water at 5:30 am out of Penn Yan on Saturday morning looking for lake trout jigging, we fished from 65-165 fow along the entire West side to the Bluff (where there were at least six boats jigging, but I never saw a fish boated) then over in front of Harbor Lights in the deep deep. We caught four fish total. One came in 85 and the other in 135 fow. We never tried inside on 65, and from the sounds of it maybe we should have? We bass fished Conesus on Sunday, short trip from 6-9 am. The boat traffic wasn't as bad as I'd feared it would be. Topwater over the weeds inside and plastic off the deeper edges netted us two fish. It hurts to be shellacked so thoroughly on the one weekend I'm a bachelor. Should'a hit the big pond from the sounds of reports from this morning.
  20. More information needed. Trolling, jigging, casting? If trolling, what type? I'm not trying to be smart, it's just that the choice of blank is entirely application dependent. For downrigging, I like a 7' e-glass blank in a MH power. Shimano Talora is a good rod, and their 8' and 9 1/2 ft diver models are also in play on our boat. Search this site for much more information on what other people are running.
  21. Raymarine, anyone?? We like Lowrance, but it's really personal preference, what you can get the best deal on and whether you need to have the latest, greatest unit out there. Some good deals right now on the HDS 7 Gen 2...I think they're phasing out in favor of the touch models? I fished on a Ranger with three 1197s last week, but $$$ twice the price of the HDS7. The 859 is also very reasonable...
  22. If you invest in the extra keel (which sounds cheaper), make sure that you read Yankee's post on where to tie off. You probably already know that the board are sensitive to where you tie the loop and make a connection. However, once it's done right, they are sweet indeed.
  23. I'm thinking that this winter's fishing may have done something to dent the population? I know that we had numerous trips where each guy caught dozens of fish, and keeping a limit was trivial. It seems like others had similar results, so I bet there was a decent overall take during February/March. The biggest fish, though, was only in the 6 lb range. It will be interesting to see what happens when the summer temps set up.
  24. I hope that the new boaters safety course touches on launching and loading and ramp etiquette. Bass tournaments can manage to launch fifty guys in 15 minutes...but one yahoo who decides to stay with his boat until the ramp is clear before walking up to his truck can set the whole thing back that much alone. I'm empathetic to the guy who doesn't know how to put a boat on a trailer. We were all newbies once. What I don't get is when I leave my boat at the end of the dock, go get my trailer, get in line, and as I'm driving around that guy above to load my boat onto the trailer, he yells at me for "cutting". Huh? I guess I'm supposed to wait for him to tie up his boat and retrieve his truck when I'm ready to go.... In other words, don't tie up the ramp until you're ready to load the boat onto the trailer. It's as simple as that, right?
  25. 10% ethanol = 10% less mpg = same amount of gas burnt to get from place to place. So much for helping the environment. And this is a conservative estimate; don't even mention E85. There's both anecdotal and solid evidence all over the place. Check out Edmunds or Car and Driver. So, who wins? Follow the money. Of course, none of this matters when you're given the scrapings off the bottom of the tank. That's a bum deal. I hope your rebuild works out. I need more walleye pictures! (Apparently I can't use a common word that describes racy pictures, because it keeps auto-correcting it...funny stuff)
