Heading South from Spencerport along Rt. 259 towards Churchville there's a guy on the left, somewhere between Whittier and Stoney Point roads, I think. He has a sign out and does quick turnaround.

Who needs rod workouts when you have those Daiwa Saltist Linecounters to make a man out of you? You should have seen the bruise on my forearm the night I ran solo and fought five kings to the boat! Best two hours of fishing I've had this year, but it left a black and blue mark the size and exact shape of the linecounter on my left arm. Ten foot or seven foot rod, wouldn't have mattered...it would still suck Best reel I've ever owned John, I took your advice and contacted Roger regarding the lathe, and he's setting me up. You the man!

We never got into fish out West this Spring. Our experience at Sandy was that the "normal" July flurry never materialized and IMHO August was okay at best. Now it seems that the skunk has hit up and down the lake. I keep thinking (and reading) about weather patterns and staging and wind, but...what if there's just not as many fish? Does anyone have the stocking numbers from 4 years ago? Was there something strange going on that year, like higher water temperatures in the creek during the pen-rearing? I seem to recall that the salmon were only kept in the pens a very, very short time one year. I know that we had an exceptional year last year, but this seems more to me than merely a reversion to normal. I'm just throwing it out there for discussion.

Saltist. When we run double dipsys, there's a clear difference between the Saltists and our two old Daiwa Great Lakes LC reels. They will be replaced this winter.

So, do you guys strip-set on the fish? Whoops, I forgot they're not tarpon...though with the mouths these kings get in the fall, they may as well be. Seriously, though, that's some good information. I'd run 7' diver rods if they cleared the riggers a bit more easily. What are the 7' rods you have in your photo, Miss em? Any issue with false releases running Dipsys in high following seas? John, you make a good point regarding diver blanks, but it seems like these things are constantly evolving, so there's hope.

Yeah, topwater can be tough in September, but its always worth a cast or two just prior to dark. Or maybe it's just me that can't resist Make sure that you post a report here when your trip is over!

I hear you guys on the whole "fishing alone" thing...I was out last Sunday by myself and I ran one of my 9 1/2' rods with a wire dipsy along with a couple of riggers. Wouldn't you know that the wire rod was hot? Watching me trying to net the first of five kings was like watching two monkeys try to screw a football. I ended up dropping 3 fish, two at the boat because of rod length. We run double dipsys, but taking a page from Gambell, I think next year there will be two 8' rods for the inside divers and two 9 1/2' rods for the outside. And as mentioned above, shorter rods can be an asset in the right situation. We run 7' downrigger sticks and I love them. Finally, there's lots of rods and reels that will work, but we still have Shimano TDR rods from 20 years ago that we run sometimes (the 1802 is a favorite) and they're probably in the $30 range new, quite a bit less used. The Convector reels are fine, as well. And if you can get your hands on some of the old metal Daiwa 27 and 47 reels, they are fantastic, especially with a drag upgrade from Tuna's Reel Troubles. We may have some stuff to sell cheap in a few weeks once I get the boat sorted out. The absolutely best thing that you can do is to hitch a ride with an experienced fisherman or two and get a feel for what you like!

I'm going to chime in and emphasize that you'll want a reasonably light jigging stick, something akin to a freshwater bass rod, set up with 10-12 lb PowerPro or Fireline and a 6-lb fluorocarbon leader. Since you'll be jigging in 100 fow+, you need to have line that won't stretch. Use the same setup to throw some topwater for smallmouth bass just prior to dark!! Keuka is known for having some pigs!

Not an expert by any stretch, but longer rods will help prevent your dipsy line from running across your downriggers and will also absorb some of the shock when you're trolling in big seas, preventing false releases. As you've experienced. Presentation-wise, the length of the rod is less of a factor than what the reel is spooled with (too obvious to make a joke). Mono is better suited for shallow depths, whereas 7-strand wire is generally preferred this time of year. There should be a bunch of threads with information on how to rig wire.

We saw you just inside of us when you first set up and we couldn't figure out at first what a pontoon boat was doing out there. I've got to say, you were rocking and rolling...good times! I'm glad to hear that you got into them. We picked up at ~8:30 with no fish, but we never made it out to that 135 fow. It was a tough day out there, and a buddy of ours is getting some knee work done soon, so he wasn't too comfortable. A couple of kings might have changed our attitude, though. Your son sounds like a trooper! -
LOC Derby question?

No settling disputes on this site! Don't you know that you're supposed to argue these points for years until they become a thing of legend? At least that's the way my partner does it I've got to admit, though...the dollar is his. Ie. we have a dollar on the front windshield that's the payoff for every bet we make. Today, the bet was I couldn't catch a fish on a downrigger using my favorite spoon. I lost. -
Heading to Adirondacks (OLD FORGE area) - Any recommendations?
Gator replied to scramp's topic in Bass Fishing
Scramp, Did you fish 4th at all? I see you say that it was the same as in past years...but you only reference 7th lake. I'd be interested in hearing the full report, and whether any of the "hotspots" produced. -

Wire Diver numbers verified with Smart Troll
Gator replied to Matthew's topic in Open Lake Discussion
Great information! At the very least, when running high divers on a 3 setting it helps to know that letting out more than 200' of line just gets the stuff further away from the boat. -
Hook your Saltist 30 up to a Mag Dipsy on a #1 setting and let out 250'...deep won't scare it! We're running an older Daiwa Great Lakes 47LC next to the Saltist and it's night and day. They will all be Saltists next year. Best prices I've seen new are at fishhbt.com, Hallett's bait and tackle here in Rochester, online. $158 for a #30 linecounter.

The mag dipsy surprised us and we were ticking bottom in 90 fow with 200 feet of wire run on a 1.5 setting. It's nice not having to spot 350 feet of line to the fish.

If you fish Fourth Lake, try the area around Algiers Island at the Southern end. There's a small launch for car top boats. The large point on the East side just prior to the island and the area east and north of the island can be great for smallmouth on topwater. I'm sure that there's lots of good spots, but I have been limited to a canoe in that area. Also, Nick's Lake can be very good for largemouth. There's a state campground where you can put in. Could be tough mid-August. Give us a report when you get back. -

Our leather fighting belt looks new, but the hassle of getting it on during a fight means that it hasn't seen much use. The Hammer Head Rod Butt Cushions pictured above work great at preventing bruises, but the rubber pulls the heck out of any hair you might have there. Probably not an issue for most women? I love the look of the neoprene ones, though. Something new to buy.

Yeah, my first thought was "blue", too...glad to see that everybody else is on the same wavelength. We are all a bunch of pigs. Or so my wife told me this morning when I read her that "talking frog" joke on the Comics Corner page. This will only reinforce her opinion. Who cares, though, the derby starts in a couple of days and I won't see her for two weeks. Plenty of time to make amends come September...prior to bow season

Disclaimer: I only build for fun, not for sale, so I'm by no means an expert. However, I'll second Copperliner's comments, with the caveat that micro guides may improve sensitivity, but since you're not casting, there's not as much advantage as regards line control, and they could be a disadvantage in wintertime when it's below freezing, IMHO. Definitely the casting setup with a spiral wrap is really comfortable. The XMB series from Batson is their top of the line high modulus blank and is a great value for the price; as for Mudhole blanks, I've never built on that particular model, but I've had generally good results with many others. If you're a spinning a"fish"ionado, the Batson XSB822.5 is a fantastic blank for this application, and it's slightly lighter than the 843. With this setup, I prefer carbon tube handles with an Aero Comfort size 16 reel seat and Fuji KH concept guides in an Alconite ring for use with superlines.

You sure know how to take advantage of the area where you live! I love seeing the updates on walleye, crappie, ducks...it's some beautiful country up North. I make it that way once a year to duck hunt, public land unfortunately and the hunting seems to have declined lately, but it's about as pretty as you can get. I might get my 11 yr old daughter up this year, since I'm Mr. Mom the weekend season opens. She'll be just shy of being able to shoot, but loves to canoe. Keep the reports coming!
