  1. Dear C & R, The vessel was most likely the Research Vessel KAHO, 65 ft. in length. Their home base is Oswego Harbor. I have seen them in every corner of Lake Ontario (US & Canada). The hull is a trawler type with a high bow and the name KAHO on both sides. A large net wheel is mounted aft. The flag displayed used to be a NOAA flag but now may be a GLFC flag? It is best to observe the day markings over the cabin. You may see 2 black diamonds pointing at each other or ball/diamond/ball displayed. The markings tell you the type of activity. THIS IS A TRUE registered fishing vessel according to maritime rules. THE INTERESTING fact to understand is they have the right of way over every other vessel (including sailboats) when displaying these day marks. If you stray into their gear, you are responsible for damage to the gear! Most sailboaters are not aware of this. Best to stay far from the KAHO since their gear/nets can be quite far from their position.....Sincerely, Jet Boat Bill
  2. Dear M.C. I used to haul a 10' wide once a month for routine maint. & cleaning. I always obtained an overwidth NYS DOT permit. If you haul w/o the permit, you are on your own. NYS DOT State Troopers nailed a boat dealer from Canan. hauling overwides to the Roch. Boat Show about 3 years ago! Been going on for years!! You are taking big chances w/o the permit. I haved moved to a smaller boat so I can avoid the NYS hassle.......Jet Boat Bill
  3. Price Reduced to 275 for the pair! August 21st!!
  4. Dear big Fishman, If you can, disconnect the steering cable at the outdrive. the steering wheel should then turn lock to lock with one finger. if not, the steering cable needs to be replaced(Best guess today!)...Jet Boat Bill
  5. Dear Tom, Hamlin Beach parkway west of monroe County has numerous areas of rough payment. West of the parkway, RT 18 has been improved and repaved. Excellent ride right into Olcott. BEWARE of radar traps, the local bears in the small towns on Rt. 18 love the fisherman's heavy feet and lack of renewal stickers on the trailer plate! You could take 104 WEST to NY 98, Go north on NY98 and turn left on to Rt. 18...(best part of 18) to Olcott. Good luck, the weather is in your favor and the Chinook should be their this weekend.......Jet Boat Bill
  6. Two electric Riveria short arm downriggers. One Model 900 and one Model 2900 Down temp probe. Both are in excellent condition and the down temp works well! with rod holders. 350.00 for the pair. 10# weights and releases included! E-mail contact [email protected] Jet Boat Bill.....5-16-07 price reduced to $300.00 for the pair
  7. Dear Reel Escape, Bottom paint is not necessary if your ready to put up with the following problems. The visible problem of green slime @ the water line will start as soon as the water temp gets to 70F. this can be cleaned off with a bristle brush weekly. Wait longer and it becomes a job for someone in the water, putting more arm into it. As the water temp. goes up, the slime grows faster. The unseen problem is the Zebra mussels. They can only be felt with your hand during the first few weeks. They feel like small grit and show up first on the underwater aluminum parts. When they reach 20 grit size, you now have a tough problem. A high pressure washer must be used to remove these critters. And all this stuff added together will increase fuel consumption and slow your boat down at least 2 mph in a month! The zebras can wreck havoc in your engine water intake system if left alone for 5 weeks. So now you can understand why you should have your bottom painted if you are going to leave your boat in the water for long time periods. Most long term boaters have gone to hoists or dry stacking because of the long term detrimental effects on fiberglass (polyester resin) hulls. Water absorption can also cause blisters and the list keeps going. Sincerely, Jet Boat Bill P.S. Look at the Triumph Boats sometime, they are made of rotational molded HD Polyethylene. Not as pretty as a fiberglass boat but bottom painting in most waters is unnecessary! They are extremely popular in Florida as they don't fade in direct sunlight and you can use scotchbrite pads to clean the green slime at the water line. Don't do this on your fiberglass boat, you will leave lots of visible scratches. AND now for the FINAL SHOT! It looks like the Tree huggers and the EPA will stop the use of bottom paints in approx. 5 to 6 years. (from Industry sources) the same people who brought you ethanol and "approved" NEW hose that needs to be replaced because they keep changing the additives and gasoline formulas.

  9. Dear EJ, Jack up each wheel and spin the wheel assembly. They should turn freely and make no noise (axles w/o brakes). No detectable side play should be felt by pushing the top, then the bottom of each wheel. The axles should turn that have brakes, but slight scuffing sounds (from the brake shoes) will be heard. if you greased the Bearing buddies, once a month, the bearings should be fine. CHECK the tires for broken belts, nails and side wall cuts. it's amazing the trash in the water at the ramps that will cut a tire. If your towing @ 65MPH on the interstate, please realize that this is the maximum rated speed for trailer tires! Goodyear recommends 5 psi over the max. tire pressure (for a LT205/75/14) of 50 PSI for the load range C. IF YOUR GOING DOWN THE INTERSTATE. It wouldn't hurt to pull the hubs, clean up and visually inspect all the parts. I do it every year, but I believe an ounce of prevention is worth the piece of mind, especially when breakdowns on major highways are very costly.......Sincerely,......Jet Boat Bill
  10. Dear PS II, Trolling bags have my vote. (After trying everything) the bags allow better directional control in cross winds or beam seas. A slight mistake on the throttle position will not cause any problems with bags. BUT will bend a Happy troller plate up or crack a lower unit cavitation plate. The plates work well but sooner or later, you will bend one up. I even cut a 4 inch diameter hole in them so the plate wouldn't cause the engine to overheat. the trolling plates will get you down under One mph. and are excellent for walleye fishing and lake trout. An engine speed of 1000 RPM is much easier on the cam & lifters when you troll for 6 to 8 hours. Don't worry, be happy, these trolling engines usually last from 2 to 5 years before major overhauls are needed. I have seen the inside of these engines since 1981 and the guys that set them up for fast idle trolling get the longest service. "Troutman" had some GM big blocks that were still going strong after 4000 hours....Sincerely, Jet Boat Bill
  11. Dear Fish Finder Owners, Operation of a transducer out of water will shorten it's life span, especially on higher power transducers. Only turn on the unit for a very short test period. Yes they do make some odd sounds at times, especially 50 KHZ transducers. Some mfg's recommend no operation out of the water! I usually test the finder/ transducer by placing the "ducer" in a pail of water when the boat is out of the water. BE SURE and turn off the electronics before you take the boat out of the water. Another piece of wisdom that will save you money in the long run......Jet Boat Bill
  12. Dear RJ, Which drive do you have that you need an alignment tool for? Pre Alpha, Alpha, Gen 1 or newer? ....Jet Boat Bill
  13. Dear Erie/ice watchers, Looked at the niagara ice boom camera @ 7:30 AM, TODAY. Ice cover is now only along south view. Probably will lose this ice by tuesday evening. Actual Buffalo Harbor temp is 36 F!! Actual offshore Erie temp @ west end is 42.6 F. AS POSTED BY THE NOAA buoys. I put little faith in "local reports" from persons "in the trade". Their talk always leans towards the positive side of "Catching fish" and wave heights! The LOC derby dates should be right on the target @ the Niagara Bar,( if the winds come out of west). If the wind is predominant east for two days at that time, that 35.6 Cold Lake Ontario water off Oswego will force the fish & bait to St Catherines/Welland Canal area. Better buy the Canadian license or a 10lb. bag of "Rabbits feet" marked "West Wind forever" With gasoline @ 3.00 gallon, I will wait for the first day after the derby! Less boat traffic and you won't be too early for the fabulous Niagara"King Bite"!.....Jet Boat Bill
  14. To all that responded, Items are sold. Thank you JK!................Jet Boat Bill
  15. Dear Fish Junkie, Congrats on the fine catch on 4/19! A mixed bag is surely a fine accomplishment. Please tell us that you released that fine walleye...alive... back into the Great Lake Ontario. I am sure that you know that the season doesn't open for walleye until the 1st Saturday in May. (May 5th) according to the NYS DEC regulations....Jet Boat Bill
  16. Dear Hans/Upgrady, Remove the three (or 4) philips head screws (10/24 screws with 3/8ths hex size nuts) from the deck fill plate. You then can pull the entire hose and deck plate out of the deck hole. Measure the length carefully as this hose doesn't stretch much! If this procedure doesn't work because of turns and anchor straps, cut the hose with a hack saw (LAST RESORT!) and remove. CAUTION, DO NOT CREATE ANY SPARKS! The hose will have one or two spring wire reinforcments. These can be cut with a linemens HD pliers. Regular sidecutters usually will not work unless they are very HD. Once you get the hose off, immediately stop and plug this fill hole in the tank. The fumes coming out of the tank add real danger to this operation. Keep a fire extinquisher(Dry Chemical) on the ready with the safety pin out! A good friend/helper should be their with this extinquisher in hand, ready for any sign of fire! Note, the life that he saves will be yours. AND if you spill any fuel, one gallon or more has to be reported to the FEDERAL PEOPLE!! Use extreme caution and be safe........Sorry about the long safety lecture, but I have seen the results of untidy fuel tank repairs and it is very daunting!......Sincerely, Jet Boat Bill
  17. Dear Ray K..... Approx. 51 years ago, (1955) Chevrolet introduced the first OHV V-8 to their line. I got to hear, see and drive everyone of those fire-breathing engines all the way to 1970. It's been downhill ever since. Unleaded gas, no more engine distinctive "exhaust "sounds" And now the cost of gasoline exceeds your monthly boat payment! Times are changing! I just hope that the good old USA survives! And may your next boat be Steam Powered!!!...sincerely, ....Jet Boat Bill
  18. Dear Gambler, Use a straight weight 30 or 40. Shell Rotella T diesel oil is one of the best and contains the vital zinc compounds necessary for survival of your camshaft, lifters and rocker arms in your "Marine Engine". The EPA has forced the oil manufacturers to remove these vital compounds for extended life of catalytic converters. All the sunburst marked oils no longer contain these vital zinc compounds. All the diesel oils are good, but Shell's has the best analysis. Or you can add a 1/4 can of GM EOS supplement to the oil of your choice at each oil change. But BEWARE, the EPA is trying to remove all the zinc additives from ALL engine oils! It's only a matter of time. .....Sincerely, Jet Boat Bill (51 years of experience with GM Marine Engines)
  19. Yes, the Niagara Ice boom is in place and according to what I have been told, the boom is opened for short periods when feasible(to allow some ice to head down river) UNFORTUNATELY, the latest Satelite imagery (March 29th) shows Lake Erie has more than 75% broken ice cover! Don't rush to the Niagara bar yet! The weather forecast for the next few days indicates that you will need to WINTERIZE your boat! The "early in's' had better drain the manifolds and blocks or else it will be "Big City Freeze Crack Time!".......Jet Boat Bill
  20. Dear Jolly II, The use of an aluminum boat in fresh water has little or no effect on your "catch ratio". With good setups, equipment and the correct lures, all is equal. It's the driver technique, speed control, and location that really make an excellent day! Give me a good driver and the rest is icing on the cake. The west coast commercial trollers are big on "black boxes" I have always believed in the positive ion issue and I agree with the theory. Just remember that this is not a good idea if the boat is left in the slip for extended periods. extensive detrimental corrosion damage will occur on any boats metal underweater gear.......Jet Boat Bill

  24. Dear Cannon, If the "new engine" installed has conventional flat tappet hyd. lifters then stay far away from the Synthetics or Sunburst marked oils. The syn's and sunburst marked oils have been developed to maintain the expected life of catalytic converters. The EPA convinced the engine mfgs and oil companys to remove the zinc based additives to maintain the life of catalytic converters. The use of Diesel coded oils (CD) such as Shell and other mfgs. in straight 30, 40 or 50 weight is highly recommended for marine engines and those vehicles NOT using catalytic converters.(Muscle Cars) Their has been a dramatic increase in camshaft and lifter wear the past 5 years. Aftermarket parts mfgs are now warning their customers about the use of modern oils in heavy duty applications using flat tappet lifters. If your new engine has hyd. roller lifters, then it may use the new coded oils. BUT trolling is harsh on marine engines. The zinc additives (In CD oils)reduce wear on sliding surfaces. I only use these CD oils in my boat and diesel tractor. I use Mobil One in my 5.3 Tahoe and just finished towing a 5400lb.boat/trailer 3100 miles with a total oil cosumption of less then 1 pint! The choice is yours to make!.........Jet Boat Bill
  25. Dear Ray, West Marine has a Cole-Hersee # 4112-RC-BP kit for $43.00. I have installed several of these and they work well (buzzer & Light warnings)The engine water temp alarm sounds @ 200 F. The oil pressure @ approx. 5 PSI ......Jet Boat Bill
