Dear Ray K, Ray, I always look at everything & this incident of dead batteries was diagnosed immediately by "Doctor Bill"....when I found one battery empty of WATER.....DRY!!!!!! The other battery had sufficient water over the plates, but only enough juice to get the engine to turn over a 1/2 turn. We waited 15 minutes and tryed again....but the "good battery" wouldn't provide enough amps to make a full revolution. ....In my life on the water.....I have been only towed 3 times...The first was in my own boat at Sodus ,1979, dead battery from running the electric riggers up from 100 ft. down. Never did that again. Then the second time, when I broke a trans. drive plate near Rochester and the Rochester CG towed me in after a 2 hour wait... I would have changed the drive plate & had all the special tools on board to do it....except no new drive plate on board! I have broken down 30 miles offshore and hung upside down in the bilge in 4 ft. waves to complete a fix and didn't puke either. ...The worst way to lose your reputation (as Mr. Goodwrench) is to get towed in!!!!.....Or worse as a local Webster charter Captain that had to get towed in by a........SAILBOAT!! .................Sincerely,.......EX-Jet Boat Bill

Dear L.O. Fisherman!..Had a great day catching SMB out of Pultneyville on a friends 26' Charter Boat.... Until 3:00 PM when the batteries went dead and very dead! (TWO BATTERIES)( Radar was left on accidently!!() Called 911 from a cell phone for local assistance. And suddenly...from the west horizon appears a charter boat...The Fishin' Magician ...Ryan Williamson on his way back from fishing the Jenny!! We waved him down with a large red shirt and he responded immediately with a tow offer back to Pultneyville. He towed us back about halfway to Pultneyville when the Wayne County Sheriffs boat arrived on the scene and offered us a battery pack jump. That did the trick and our rig stated. We proceeded back to the harbor safe & sound. I would like to Thank Ryan Williamson for the tow and the Wayne County Marine Patrol men for the rapid response to our call. It sure was nice NOT having to wait long hours for assistance. And we made it home in time for dinner too! Respectfully submitted, ......Ex Jet Boat Bill....Tuesday 7:45 PM

Opinions wanted before I pull the trigger....UPDATE
borderline 350 replied to Fishtails's topic in This Old Boat
Dear FT, Congrats on your project. The use of aluminum framing instead of wood will bring you right into the new century! As you might already know, a 39 tooth carbibe blade in your "Skil saw" and table saw will readily cut aluminum sheet and plate up to 1/2 inch thick with a bit of wax stick added to the blade before cutting. Raising the top in one of these Searays is a must for us trolling people. (I owned a 1979 Searay hardtop for two years and hit my head so many times, it was crazy!!) The boat will roll a lot less in a beam sea after removing the bridge, also.!! You should see better fuel mileage and about a 2 MPH increase in cruise speed also. And rewiring the boat will be a lot easier with only one staion. Keep up the good work and post some photos as you progress to completion. .....Respectfully submitted...X-Jet Boat Bill -
DEAR Dewey 123, The Forschner 12 inch breaking style knife ....made in Switzerland with the black plastic handle is a fine blade that holds an edge well. TAKE NOTE...the Forschner knife with the rosewood handle is made in Brazil. I have this one also. Not as good as the swiss made one as does not hold an edge as long as the swiss made one. I sharpen mine after each use. I DO NOT LET ANYONE USE IT!! That is how it stays in good condition. ....STORY TIME....LET a friend borrow it once (at Bluffers Park).... He ended up in the hospital 20 minutes later for 15 stiches!!!.....Respectfully submitted....X-Jet Boat Bill

Dear PJ Weber, Please provide the carb. number, application & year. Also if two barrel or 4 barrel. If it is a Weber/Mercruiser carb (AFB style base). I usually can rebuild your existing carb unless their is internal corrosion. .....................Weber/Mercruiser 4 barrel kits are in the $100.00 RANGE and hard to get. Q- Jet kits are around $35.00. Also Hank at L & M may have a used one. New carbs are VERY EXPENSIVE!!!!! ..........Labor to rebuild most Marine Carbs is $150.00 A good used carb. is VERY HARD TO FIND. .........................Respectfully submitted,.....X-Jet Boat Bill...Webster, NY

Dear Joe, Call Hank @ L & M at Port Bay. Pull the boat & ask for an estimate and that will tell you what direction to take. At this time of year everyone has a backlog. Your patience and wallet will get strained. Try to keep your sanity as Volvo Marine parts are VERY expensive. All outdrive parts are expensive, but Volvo is one step above everyone on pricing parts. Start with Hank as he is honest and has the intestinal fortitude, knowledge & attitude to complete the job. Sincerely, Jet-X Boat Bill

trailer wench handle
borderline 350 replied to Bag Lady's topic in Classifieds - Buy, Sell, Trade or Rent
Dear Bag Lady, Check the name & model of your winch. I believe it will be a Fulton, Model T2000, T2500 or T2501 or 3700. These take a 10 inch long handle spring loaded latch. I believe the part number is Fulton 9235PO1. They are approx. $25 + shipping on various web sites. A large trailer dealer in your area (Williamsport) should have one also. If all else fails, I have one attached to a like new Fulton strap type winch. $30.00 plus shipping if your interested for the whole winch..............Sincerely, Jet-X Boat Bill....Webster, NY....P.S. Wenches are very expensive but easily found -
Dear Howitzer, !. Speed is VERY IMPORTANT. Troll with one engine @ dead idle (under 900 RPM) until you can get a pair of LARGE trolling bags. 2.0 to 2.5 on your GPS will be excellent for all the cold water in your area. 2. The fish in your area will be in the top 100 FT. of water all summer unless the wind blows out of the east for two days or more. After todays 25 to 30 mph westerly blow, your surface temps will be near 45F. (Best Guess from fishing there for 5 years). 3. Run small spoons NK 28 size and smaller. Fish over the drop offs and the "mine field off Oshawa". Keep looking for the bait pods on your screen. The best accent color is still blue & pearl tape on a black & white or black & silver spoon. Lead length off the riggers should be approx. the water clarity distance. I.E. Cold Water=25 ft. lead. Sliders are good on your side of the pond and will produce many rainbows. DO NOT RUN LARGE TERMINAL TACKLE. 25 to 30 lb. test swivels are great . Use coastlock type swivels for best results. Run 7 ft 20 to 25# test flurocarbon leaders using a palomar knot on the snap swivel. 4. On flat water, high sun days, run one rigger just off the bottom on the drop-offs. (structure)....Above all slow DOWNNNN!. When you finally catch a fish, let us KNOW!! You are in the best place in LO for catching fish now to approx. 2nd week in August!(Or when you get a 3 day Easterly blow!) Then the salmon will make big moves towards the Yankee side!.........Respectfully submitted,......Jet-X Boat Bill (formerly of Bluffers Park)

fishing canada...think again
borderline 350 replied to traveling man's topic in Open Lake Discussion
Dear Fishtails, I would sit down as soon as possible and write your Congressman about this unfair treatment & $1000 fine. Send copies to your local newspaper also. The Canadian Government should be ashamed of such conduct by their officers. I always took everyone to the phone when calling customs in Cobourg.Port Credit. Scarborough etc. because of all the data they asked for. Do not let this incident go unoticed! ......I have always been on my best behaviour when going thru customs. Our Bill of Rights ends WHEN YOU SUBMIT to customs inspection. AND YOU CAN BE DETAINED INDEFINITELY. Seems like the latest $1000 fine for "reporting process errors" is very bad. Let's give the Canadians the same treatment when they arrive here!! ................Jet-X Boat Bill -

Dear Jimski2, Thank you for this computer forecasting model!! Very interesting data on WIND FLOW & DIRECTION. I will use this for a while and see how accurate the predictions are for the wind....Now actual water flow directions in the Canadian book (Small Craft Guide, First Edition)) do show different directions from air flow that were recorded over several decades for Air Sea rescue info. They still are taking data from drift buoys as to water movement etc. Very good info for the serious fisherman. Thanks again for the neat wind prediction site! Sincerely,....Jet Boat Bill

Dear Mickey Finn, Capt Vince said it well. Wait........ Buoy 45012 has been showing easterly winds for 8 straight days. TODAY it's 23 KNOTS out of the NORTHEAST!!! Save your gas money...wait until that wind blows out of the west for 2 days @ 45012....then GO FOR IT! The fish that I cleaned Friday were full of Emerald shiners....small minnows. Catching was very slow to stop on Friday on unless you were on the Red can and West....EHH!!! Respectfully submitted....Jet Boat Bill

Problem with hooking kicker to main fuel tank!
borderline 350 replied to rshubuck's topic in This Old Boat
Dear RSHUBUCK, Remove the fitting from the elbow in top of the tank. (It has a spring loaded checkball in it) Install a tee with two shutoff valves and barbed nipples for each line. The OB engine should run fine with 6 ft. of hose. YOU MUST INSTALL shutoff valves to meet USCG, BIA & insurance co. requirements...A MUST!!!! The OB fuel pump does not have sufficient vacuum to keep the checkball open. Common problem on these installs. You may also have vacuum leaks in your OB fuel line...Check very carefully...... Respectfully submitted....Jet Boat Bill -
Thanks Long LIne!! ....37 degree water being pushed by West Winds (@ 45012) equals Cold Water going EAST and 39 degree water upwelling at Toronto Island!! Port Dalhousie will be the place to be for good fishing/catching. The tourney results there this weekend should be good. The bait & fish will be having a party in that outflow. .....Sincerely, ....Jet Boat Bill

Dear Stinger, In order to get better fuel mileage towing, you will have to wait for the future...!! The new GM small Duramax V-6 Diesel (due TWO YEARS AGO) for the small 1/2 ton trucks will be the ticket. And obsolete everything when it arrives!!! You wll able to get 20+ MPG empty and have a vehicle that rides nice. The present V-8 Duramax's are HEAVY DUTY chassis and ride like one empty. And they get 19 to 21 MPG empty. The premium cost of diesel fuel and future fuel price increases may remove us from towing at all. Enjoy towing while you can, Leaving a boat in the water brings on more expenses....that's why dry stacking boats has become so popular. I presently get 10 to 10.5 MPG towing a 5500 lb. payload with a 5.3 GM V-8/Tahoe with 3.73 rear gears. (at 65 MPH). Comfortably & safely. Hilly country will drop it down below 10 MPG. The cost of a new vehicle also will be prohibitive. Talk to people that actually own what your going to buy before you make your choice is the best advice. Do not underpower and get the right rear axle ratio. Rspectfully submitted,....Jet Boat Bill

Dear HB, The -50 F freezing protection of PURE RV antifreeze is adequate for protection for marine engines, engine oil coolers, etc. BUT THE SYSTEM, must be properly drained of all water and silt as Hank of L & M mentioned. Silt in the exhaust manifold system will prevent complete draining and expose the engine to DILUTED RV antifreeze, which can have problems. Draining & flushing these raw water cooling systems is paramount to the process working. Note: The newer Volvo/GM V-6 Vortec marine engines have an entrapment area in the intake manifold that must be blown out with compressed air in order to properly drain the manifold!! Knowing how to drain & flush each engine type is important to understand so you do not experience cracked engine components. I have left samples of the -50 TV antifreeze in the freezer @ -20F ( digital thermometer) and the stuff was the consistency of a weak slurpy. This stuff has a very long slush point before it becomes a solid. Respectfully submitted, .............................Jet Boat Bill

Dear Sean, Sorry to read about the warranty coverage problem on your Yamaha OB. All the marine engine mfg's have been using this reason,.....commercial operation.....(Mercruiser....30 DAYS!!) etc. for quite a while. You of course with a Captains License & business website will qualify as a commercial user. Also, all the big car mfg's are using all kinds of computer data off your car computer to disallow warranty coverage on engines and transmissions!! The selling of extended warranty's is very profitable for them and very expensive to you. .........All of this is no help to you with a broken engine. I have seen this situation for many years since the boat sales crash in the 1990's...a..I would talk to your engine mechanic and see if he believes the failure is due to neglect, lack of lubrication, bad fuel or whatever. Write down what they say and start pounding on Yamaha's doors for some form of warranty adjustment..... These situations take months sometimes to get anything! IN MY OPINION, all the engine mfg's are using any reason in the warranty fine print to dis-allow COVERAGE. Even the best...BMW...will pull coverage for this stuff when the cost gets prohibitive. Do hope you get something from Yamaha. ..........Sincerely,......Jet Boat Bill

Dear Lakeoeffect, Yes, and it handles extremely well when docking, trolling or running. Because it is modern technology from Hamilton Jet/New Zealand. Finite speed control with hydraulic jet bucket (HMJ 213) 15 degrre bottom for Lake Use. ......( Not so good low speed handling with the US pumps from Berkley). Go to River Jet and see what they do in the NW US and western Canada with Jet Boats and aluminum hulls. Not .060 thickness either.......mine is 1/4 inch 5056 aluminum and can be beached on rocky shorelines. Also for sale here on LOU Respectfully Submitted, .........Jet Boat Bill

Important--Border Patrol Request
borderline 350 replied to Capt Vince Pierleoni's topic in Open Lake Discussion
Dear LastMinute, Sorry, my old memory is in error. The Pickering Nuke Plant is the THIRD LARGEST (4,336 megawatts) in the World today, Bruce is second (7,276 megawatts) And the Japanese have the largest one according to WIKAPEDIA. BUT Pickering was the biggest in 1986 before Bruce came on line. I also observed that the cooling towers are gone...been remodeled also. Sorry for the geography error. Important--Border Patrol Request
borderline 350 replied to Capt Vince Pierleoni's topic in Open Lake Discussion
Dear Vince, It is good to know that the Border Patrol is available and wants our help. Forty Terror Cells....that doesn't bother me too much because the Ontario Provincial Police do a very good job. They were checking all boat registration numbers in Bluffers Park Marina by computer in 1988! Remember that big nuke plant at OSHAWA, Ontario? Thats almost due west of Oak Orchard and the prevailing winds are out of the WEST! think about this......THE OSHAWA NUKE Plant is the largest NUKE plant in the free world. FACT, taught to every Canadian student. Around this plant live many, many fellows that hate mostly every person and Christian fellow. I do hope our Northern friends have this plant wired with every kind of defensive and offensive device. The people in the Eastern US do not have a clue of the potential danger there. I do wonder when the media will wake up on this one! ...... Sincerely, ........................... Jet Boat Bill -
Dear Danno, Hank at L & M Port Bay has a fine reputation and is honest about repairs. Very hard to find people as good as Hank. What needs to be fixed? Give us a little more detail please. Some stuff can be very difficult to find parts for. Whoever does the work, get an estimate first. Did one last year that ended up costing more then the boat was worth. Fixing stuff from the 1980's is very difficult. Respectfully submitted,...............Jet Boat Bill
