What to do / where to go?
Paul Czarnecki replied to slapshot's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
East wind all week?????? Head west young man. -
You can do Online registrations ONLY right now and I think its getting very close on that. Get it in NOW!

As our kings are showing up all along the south shore of Lake O here is one from last year. I just finished this 36# king for Pat Brady of the Wilson Boatyard. He caught it last August fishing with Mike Lis.

Try to come in just ONE time in heavy fog without a good GPS and/or radar and you will know what the most valuable piece of equipment on your boat is. However, down speed and temp is something I would not like to live without but, some of the best fishermen I know have never owned one.

WOW....congrats on the successful release with no bloodshed from either party. Ospreys tend to lose their sense of humor when they are reeled in with a hook stuck in their foot. They are one of the coolest raptors to observe hunting. Good job and great pics.

Welcome to the West end where all the fish are..... . You should do fine at either location. In Wilson, try working the shallows east toward Olcott (7-10 fow) with small shallow sticks and small spoons for browns. If the water is too clear head out to 50 -80 fow and put some laker gear down within 10 feet of bottom. If you choose Niagara the area between the green can and the red can holds tons of lakers right now. Good luck and again.....welcome to where the fish call home.

The increase was actually last year and was probably long overdue hence the big increase. You can get a Regulation book from any license agent or by calling the DEC and requesting one.

Sodus 4/10

BB - That photo is not very good of the top of his head, but one of the marks is very symmetrical & round. It was also small so I believe a juvenile lamprey may have been confused as to where to latch on? BG - That ramp/dock/shallow water/rocks are fun to navigate arent they? That fish is a dropback from the creek. The scars look to be spawning scars or bird scars. Its hard to tell from the small pic though. -
BEST OF THE WEST
Paul Czarnecki replied to get it wet's topic in Tournament Talk, Shows, Events & Seminars
From this day forward, Captain Pete's new nickname is......................................... CAPTAIN HOME RUN Your placement in the "Triple Crown" should be based on where you FINISH in each tournament not how big of a box you boated in ONE tournament. To do so would diminish the importance of the KOTL and WHI events since they are 5 and 6 fish events while Niagara is a 12 fish event for Pros and 9 for Ams. Why eliminate those fishing the AM Division in Niagara as well? Its a great concept but putting it on weight alone takes us back to the old Challenge Cup days where a monster box in Oswego easily eclipses winning catches in Niagara. Not a good scenario except for the "Home Run" guy that comes in with a monster box in Niagara after back to back "strokes" in the KOTL and WHI. Put the emphasis on PLACEMENT or don't do it at all. My "for what its worth" opinion. -

Okuma Blue Diamond Down rigger rods any good??

You won't go wrong with the Okuma Blue Diamond rods. -
spring salmon?
Paul Czarnecki replied to jkarol24's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
Its you. Cohos and steelhead are very different in appearance once you look beyond the initial coloration. Steelhead have a square tail that is completely covered with small spots lined up on the fin rays. Cohos have a slightly forked tail that is usually free of spots but carries the chrome color well into the tail itself. This is most evident on spring and summer fish. Heads and mouths are different and easily to tell the two apart as well. -
spring salmon?

Go to the video secton here......the Michigan guys have been pounding the cohos for a few weeks already. -
I wonder how that "girly boat" and your AZZ would look after I peppered them both with Chartreuse paint balls at 350 fps? BTW.....I'd be happy with second places for the rest of my tournament career. No shame in being a bride's maid.

Canadian Fishing License
Paul Czarnecki replied to Breakaway Fishing Charter's topic in Open Lake Discussion
We've been buying them that way for a few years now but, like Greg said, getting the Outdoors card might add a few days to it. Get it soon if you're headed to Dalhousie Jeff. -
Rod...there are MORE THAN ENOUGH days for you to get LUCKY ENOUGH to have calm water in the West end of the lake. It ain't Oswego! MOST of the time we are fishing waves less than 3 feet and more often than not they are 2 ft. or less. That's a perfect Lower Niagara to the Oak boat and would be a great tournament "scout boat". Rig it up and quit being a wuss!

Downriggers will definitely help. You could run just dipseys and catch some fish but riggers will give you more versatility and depth coverage. If you're just running divers you should look into longer diver rods. They will allow you to run longer leaders. For line, 20# mono or 30# braid will get you started with your divers but, like I said two 8 ft. rods loaded with 20# on riggers will help you a lot. Get a selection of spoons from a local tackle shop or someone else that knows what you're fishing for----NOT Gander Mtn or Dicks. Great Lakes Tackle shop is a sponsor here and carries everything you could possibly need. Don't worry about flashers and flies for right now although you will want some for the summer. As to location.....your best bet (and easiest fishing) will be the Western end of the Lake from the mouth of the Niagara to Olcott in the month of May. You will learn a lot very quickly there. You might also consider an on the water class with an experienced captain. A 15 year learning curve can be shortened drastically with one or two days of on the water instruction with someone that does this for a living. PM me for details. Good luck.

It figures Vince would come in with logic and reason and screw up a perfectly good internet fight! Thanks Vince!

I'm heartbroken Tom.

Steelhead mainly. You can catch a steelhead pretty much any time of the year without trying hard at the Oak while the guys at Oswego would have given their left manhood for even one steelhead on most of their days there last year. I'm not going to get into a us vs. them debate with Cheerleader Tom. I have a lot of good friends in Oswego who are VERY good fishermen and I do enjoy my trips there. However, if it weren't for the lakers 20 years ago and the browns of today Oswego would be nothing more than a college town with a nuke plant. Perhaps Tom can rally his troops and bolster the Oswego poll numbers now----I'm sure the City and County will appreciate it.
-
Perhaps we should do two different polls. One for fishermen......"What is the best "FISHING" port on the lake?" And one for the partiers......"What is the best "NIGHTLIFE" port on the lake?" For sheer numbers and variety of fish within easy reach its the OAK. For after fishing partying I would have to give the nod to Sodus with Oswego a close second.
-
I was thinking something like........"Goober"
-
Or July. Or early to mid August. In fact, with the exception of the brown trout and the 1 WEEK when some kings show up Oswego has NOTHING except ROUGH WATER, bars and college chicks. Not that the latter is a bad thing.
