  1. Are there any commonalities between landing a 3-6 lb Walleye and a 20-30 lb King?

You can use your Salmon gear to fish for anything with a line change but you got to understand you will simply be winching the fish in with no consideration for a battle of any kind. Rods are the most important factor.

Walleyes don't "battle" anyway. Change lines or reels and winch the walleyes in. Walleye fishing is harvesting not sport fishing anyway.

  2. I'm done .. Pulled boat outta Mexico last weds after a totally frustrating season , only one mature salmon caught in 28 days on the water from June - sept . Even last year was far better for me 10 fold then this season .

Seriously having deep thoughts about not coming back as a seasonal dock but I hate to see the boat just sit idle in the driveway after our striped bass depart back to the sea .

I don't know , some hard decisions will have to be made over the winter .

As for such , I'm currently getting my game face on for hunting and ice fishing . At least they never let me down :)

    Rich

We had great salmon fishing from May till August on the west end. It would have continued right through August if that giant NE blow didn't ruin it.

    Go west young man!

  3. Yeah it's by the inch. For skin mounts, trout and salmon are usually about $2 more per inch so you are looking at anywhere from $9- $12 per inch but I have never priced out a replica but again it depends on who you go to. The guy that did my mounts in Camillus I think got out of the business but he was awesome and reasonable.

    "$9-$12 per inch"?????

    In 1978 maybe. [emoji14]

  4. Why does there have to be a size limit?

In my 35 years of taxidermy I deal with this all the time. Like pap said its a matter of personal preference.

MY "personal preference" is to have a great representative of the species. More often than not the biggest isn't the prettiest or the nicest to look at.

    Personal preference !

  5. I am no expert by any means but did take a charter once and the captain explained what do do if we hooked into a steelhead. Light drag, keep rod tip high and do not pull back on the rod

Exactly. Most steelhead are just barely hooked anyway. Any added pressure whatsoever will often pull the hooks. Sure, there are exceptions but it usually involves a steelhead hitting a flasher and fly rig.

Softer and gentler is better with steelhead.

  6. IMO ,and not to discourage the business .

The best mount is to take many a picture , pick out the best and enlarge it , frame it and hang it on the wall .

I have a bunch of poster size wildlife and outdoor scenery in my house .

There are just to many bad things that can happen with a reproduction

    Like what??

  7. Nice fishmounter. I don't know much about taxidermy or who's who around here, but I'm sorry to say everything I've seen in this thread from Fishwish has been somewhat horrific. What is her problem with doing fins properly????

Trout and salmon fins do not dry well. They are mostly cartilage and membrane and shrink horribly when dried. The only proper way to do them is mold and cast them. However, to do so is expensive and time consuming and most taxidermists take the easier, cheaper way out.

  8. Brian I've read the management plan and I know a little something about wildlife management.

The two year old alewives you speak of are not "missing". They may not be as prevalent as other year classes but the steelhead we are catching high in the water column are full of them. Advocating MORE steelhead to replace decreased king stocks will do more to hurt young alewives than anything.

For what it's worth---Lake Ontario will NEVER go the way of Huron or Michigan because of Lake Erie. Erie makes Lake Ontario totally unique from the other Great Lakes because of the constant influx of nutrients down the Niagara.

Finally---I'm not starting rumors. I merely stated my opinion based on 35 years of salmon fishing the Great Lakes and two decades of dealing with state politics.

  9. I don't have an exact number as of yet but it is going to be very small. Maybe 200 to 300k. Doesn't amount to much. The negative impact with publicity will hurt more then that amount of kings..... The Lake Ontario management plans require them to manage the Lake for kings. This is more then likely a temporary measure. A big year with Natural spawn and it easily makes up for that number. You want to be pro active stay out of the upper fly zone of the salmon river and let those kings do there thing!

Brian do you really believe "200-300 thousand" kings won't make a difference? Do you really believe NY will increase stocking when, according to them, the bait rebounds??

I'm seeing more bait than ever this year and on both sides of the lake. The young 2" alewives are loaded up in the deep water. The kings we are catching this year are the fattest, roundest kings I've ever seen. Body profiles don't even look like salmon!

My opinion----there is no bait shortage. This is a manufactured crisis to replace kings with federally funded lake trout.

Once those king stocks are gone you will never get them back.

If the DEC really wanted to manage the bait in the lake they wouldn't be stocking so many lakers which continue to eat alewives for years. A salmon lives three or four years at most. A laker can live 20 or more.

    Do the math!
