Chug, you will be able to fit 1000ft of 20lb wire on that 27lc. However, running 20lb wire comes with it's own set of conditions that have to be met so you don't find yourself breaking off expensive tackle. I would suggest going to a sg47lc size reel and using 30lb wire to start. It would cost you a lot less in the long run . I had a 32lb 6oz king run all my 20lb wire almost to the backing before he stopped running. We did get him in. My man was not in the derby! OUCH! Here's a pic.

We have had the best results using the spro power swivels as per Ernie. The connection is called a haywire twist. You put the copper thru the spro swivel twice and then wrap the copper back on to itself. You wrap the copper on loose for a couple of wraps and then tightly together to finish it . We have added shrink tubing over the copper side of the connection to maintain the integrity of the backing and/or the leader if it should come in contact with any sharp edges left exposed, otherwise. The top shows an Albright knot. It does not seem to hold up to our lake ontario kings. The haywire twist as per Ernie IS the way to go. The bottom shows the haywire twist without the shrink tube on it yet! The leader is tied on with a clinch knot( double thru the hole). The backing is tied on with a double palomar knot. A single Palomar has a tendency to slip with the superlines.

I'm here Tommy, back from So. Africa. We ran 500ft of a 600ft rig off of Otter boards last year. I prefer to have the knot in the water, but we didn't have any 500fter's on the boat.(Seadevils) . So out of necessity we half hitched a rubber band around the copper and attached it to a jolly release. It is designed to break the rubber band on a strike. Caught fish with it without any problems. The section of copper between the rod and the board dips quite a bit so we had the rod set in a high position to keep the copper out of the water most of the time. THE RUBBER BAND DID NOT SEEM TO HARM THE COPPER IN ANY WAY. The most common breaking point on copper rigs last year was at the Albright knot connection just ahead of the knot on the copper side at the backing splice. All the guys that used the Albright knot and new how to catch fish were cussing. Tom, you know who they are! They had to buy more copper from you. Ernie Lanteigne first showed me the copper set-ups over seven years ago on Lake Michigan with Tim Dawiduk from Howies tackle. He recommended using the spro power swivels to make the connections between the backing to copper and the copper to leader splice. The rigs that I had set up this way did knot break like the Albright knot splices did. I know that there are folks on Lake Michigan who promote the Albright knot for connecting. It just doesn't seem to hold up well enough on our Lake Ontario Kings. After about six or seven mature kings look out! I had one 600ft set up last year that took well over sixty kings and is still going strong. I even let BIG FINN use it! It has the spro power swivels on it. I think I became one of Tommy's best customers last year because of the Albright knot. A lot of my buddies had to buy copper from Tommy, too. Sorry Tom, don't mean to cut into your copper sales. I think I made up for it though, with all the other goodies I HAD to buy from you. LOL!

You can use the dubro release, almost identical to the blacks, except you can unscrew the halves and re-assemble it around the cable. The Scotty pins work great to stop the release from sliding up the cable and are adjustable.

The new technology is awesome. It really does mark fish going that fast. After a blow and everybody is in search mode, it is at its best. Last year when coming in from the morning trip I marked a bunch of big hooks just off the bottom in 100 ft of water. I called Kevin to let him know and they finished out their limit with the five more kings they needed. I used a raytheon v850 for the last 12 years and the faster you went the smaller the targets would show up on the screen till the screen became all cluttered. The chart speed on the new furuno can be set to go fast enough to off set the shrinking of the targets on the screen as the boat speed increases. The digital technology in the new furuno allows for the clearer picture. It will do what I say. If you know Jim Staves well enough and even if you don't, just ask him. With a thru hull transducer we can mark fish going over 25mph up on plane and mark them clearly. You can adjust the screen speed to accommodate the faster boat speed to mark the fish. Received an e-mail from Dave Mull today. Apparently someone sent the sight a worm which really messed things up. Thanks for letting me back on guys, Sorry about the overgrown photo. I used photo bucket and couldn't figure out how to reduce it. I'll just keep it off. L/M 'S set up is what most of the Charter fleet over our neck of the woods ,eastern Lake O, use . No snubbers, and drags set just tite enough so they bleed every now and then. 40lb leader from the dipsey to the attractors, 20lb test for spoons. Loose drags can always be tightened, tite drags to start, well that's another story. Capt. Ace
