Mr clean's Fair Haven Report
Valinote replied to mrclean's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Thank for the status update on the bay conditions, Carmen. I went out fishing yesterday morning, and when I came back in the afternoon my dock was just about under water. Had to move the boat to the other side of the marina next to Finders Keepers where they've nailed on the dock risers. Glad you and Bill were able to get out there and have some fun. That one brown you caught was a monster! -Steve D -

Thanks for the update, Phil. That's great news! 8-] -Steve D -
I'll be there with a pair of wire clippers and as much geriatric enthusiasm as I can muster...8-] -Steve D

Call Phil at Family Style Charters 315-709-9958. He did a bang up job running the event last year and fun was had by all involved. The date is usually mid-June. -Steve D

The fishing seems to have picked up in the last week at most ports on the southern shore. In general people have reported marking a lot of bait pods and active hooks. Also, most of the little wieners and dinks have been chased away by teenagers and some mature fish. The lake has set up nice with temps of ~49 degrees down 85' in 100 fow as of this morning. Hopefully, we won't get a big blow before the 4th of July that will screw everything up for the coming holiday...8-] -Steve D -
Thanks , Gill. You'll have to let us know how the EV-200 handles slow trolling when the wind and waves are not so nice. That $300 rebate you mentioned...did it expire at the end of April? Think I waited too long this year before I started shopping...8-] -Steve D P.S. Forgot to ask...how does the autopilot do when you're trolling with only one engine (port or starboard)?

I'll be up tomorrow to do some electrical work to get rid of that rats nest of wires hanging down in front of my face at the helm. Last year I was fooling around with a small separate isolated gel battery for the fishfinder. But after a lot of A/B comparison, the reduction in noise just wasn't worth the extra effort/aggravation. Going to connect the ff back into the mains with the other electronics. If I get done in time and the weather cooperates I might go out for the nite bite. Hope to see you out there...8-] -Steve D -

Fair Haven 7/18 and 7/19

Glad to hear you guys did well. We struggled both Fri and Sat straight out front of the chute in the same depth of water. Every wiener fish we caught both days was already on when we went to check the lines. Not a single fish popped a release or a dipsy. Oh for the sound of a screaming reel! The floating weeds in the water, the beginning of the water fleas, the heat, and the biting flies made it a long two days. Seems like most of the success on Sat came from guys scraping the bottom in 100 fow with cut bait. I'm happy to hear you did them on the flasher/flies though, because I try to avoid using cut bait if at all possible. However, another couple weekends like this and I may forgo my principles...8-] -Steve D -
Owesgo reports?
Valinote replied to jason8333's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Is anyone still using stickbaits for the browns or is it now an all spoon bite? Also, how to you keeps the darn weeds off in that shallow water without pulling up your lines every 5 minutes to clean them? Thanks...8-] -Steve D -

Yes, Brian, your website was awesome. I realized a few years ago that the Total Chaos web domain had lapsed and I was sorry to see it go. I actually have some of the excellent "How Tos" on salmon and brown fishing you wrote printed out in a notebook in my boat. You wrote a lot a great articles with pictures that detailed the basics of fishing the big O. Those would be great as pinned or sticky posts in a thread on LOU. Just a thought...8-] -Steve D -

I was out for a few hours late yesterday afternoon; mostly for a shakedown cruise, but I did poke a couple rods out. Could only muster one little brown and a bass, both on a reddish gold rapala. I was inshore in about 17 FOW and didn't go out far as t-storms were rolling in. The water was gin clear. But after last nights storms and the wind blowing all day today there's a nice mud line out there. Just need the waves the drop down a bit so I can get back out there. Hope to see you at the marina. -Steve D -

Fished on Saturday 28th from 2 -6pm. Ran straight out of the chute to 200 fow. Set up 3 riggers with spoons and 2 dipseys with flashers/flies. Temp was way down deep. Went 8 for 10 trolling between 200 and 300 fow. 5 teenage salmon and 1 mature in the high 20's, and 2 steelies. No action on the dipseys, as it was an all-spoon bite. Riggers at 130, 120, 110 with NBK, Gator, and Frostbite. Beautiful day on the water. Tight lines to all...8-] -Steve D -
Report out of Fairhaven?
Valinote replied to bill furdock's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Thanks for the info, Werner. I was at the ELOSTA meeting last Wednesday and heard that starting next year all the mature fish from the netpen will only have the nose implant tag that requires a wand to detect. That's too bad because, although I release most of my fish if they're not bleeders, I like to keep a small one once in a while to eat; but I would prefer to return any netpen fish to the lake for the future of our local fishery. TIght lines...8-] -Steve D -
