Hi all, My dad took me fishing my entire childhood, but he wasn't a hunter. I began deer hunting when i was 25, and i've always hunted solo. Thus, i am not the most skilled or successful deer hunter. In the past 17 years, i have taken 41 deer, and this is probably my best to date (i have others with longer tines, or wider, but something about this one is really cool to me). It feels like quite an accomplishment because i got it on state lands. I had put a climber up the day before way back in a swampy area and i think other hunters pushed him my way. Got him at 1:30, after having sat in stand since 6am. Does anyone have a sense of his age? thanks, dre

I need some crimps to secure my black's releases on my downrigger cable. Where do you all get em? dre

Pete, we haven't met in person, but like others have said, your posts are so well-written that i feel i know you! what port have you been heading out of for your laker jigging? I tried for a few hours last week out of sandy creek and couldn't find any concentrations. I was looking in 50-70 fow because my 48 degree temps were as shallow as 50 that day. best, andre

Thanks again everyone. I still need a few things clarified for me. First, where can i buy the crimps needed for the setup Tom recommends? Second, what is the red, egg-shaped object between the ball and the swivel (in Tom's diagram)? Third, i want to try to re-set the eyes in my rigger balls so they hang horizontally. I know lead is toxic, so should i NOT drill new holes in the balls in which to set new eyes? How would you recommend i re-set the eyes, because they broke when i tried to bend them forward and unscrew them. thanks very much! dre

Thanks to everybody for their replies. I do keep the rod loaded as the ball goes down - perhaps I have too much pressure when I do that. I also let the ball down very quickly - I have manual not electric downrigger's. I never stop or go neutral with my Riggers out. Attached is a photo of my set up and the problem tangle. My booms are 40 inches my rods are shorter than most - they are 7 feet but I've used them for years and this problem just started happening My releases swivel very freely around the cable and as I said earlier the downrigger balls appear to track nicely And the tip of my ride is further out and behind the downrigger cable

I am repeatedly having trouble with my fishing line getting tangled in my downrigger cables. I use 20# braid for my main line, and Black's downrigger releases. I hope i can make clear what my problem is, so that one of you might troubleshoot it for me. Here's the problem in more detail (it doesn't happen all the time, i'm guessing about 1/3 of the time on Lake O, and much, much less on the fingerlakes): When i wind up my rigger, my fishing line is still in the release, but the line between the release and my rod is wrapped 20-30 times around the rigger cable - wrapped so many times that if a fish hit, it couldn't release. I know this happened the other day because my 20# flouro leader was broken off and the braid was wrapped around the rigger cable. I can't imagine how this is happening. When i watch my ball a few feet below the surface, it seems to track well. Has anyone had this problem and/or know how to fix it? I wonder if the more powerful currents on Lake O are contributing to this, but i bet most of you don't have this problem. many thanks, andre

I had my 1986 evinrude 90 hp worked on by Hank (by far the best boat mechanic i've ever had - i drive 90+ miles from springwater because he is so good). Since he's right near Lake O, i thought i'd check out the motor and do a bit of solo fishing. Before i could get my second line in the water, this king nailed a glow frog spoon 100 down over 200 fow. I ended up with a few others, but none this big. That day, as well as yesterday, i am having trouble with my fishing line getting tangled in my downrigger cables. Unlike most folks, i use shimano curados on casting rods for my downrigger rods - i love catching big kings on light gear! I use 20# braid for my main line, and Black's downrigger releases. Hi all, What do you think this is. I would have thought a king, but i saw this near the boat launch at hemlock lake. I suppose it could be a brown, but i don't recall teeth like that, plus the gums are black like a king. My boot is size 12 - i 'm guessing the fish was 15-20# - would be a heck of a brown out of hemlock! I suppose someone could have caught a king from Lake O and brought it to hemlock to give folks like me a kick. thanks, dre

i fished conesus monday from 8p-midnight. Caught 2 large bass and 2 good sized pike, but no walleye. Water temps (according to my humminbird, i never saw above 49) are still too cold - IMO andre

given the cold temps, are you guys catching eyes? I'm no master eye fisher (although i do better than some ) but i seem to catch em only when temps are at least 50, preferably 52. I'm curious about your thoughts about temp and catching eyes. Should i head to conesus now or wait til it warms? thanks for your input, andre

This is the first year in more than 5 years that i missed the walleye opener. I suspect the water is still colder than normal. Does anyone know the water temps on Conesus as of now? thanks, andre

It seems to me that the dates for FLX trib fishing should vary from year to year, rather than being the fixed April 1 date. There are reasons for those dates (to allow the trout to spawn) but in a year like this, there might as well be no regulations.... It really bothers me that the rainbows in lakes like Canandaigua, Seneca etc can be diminished for years so that a small number of anglers can get fish in confined spaces andre

we used the launch at the south end of the lake near the hotel. I don't know the s. end of seneca very well, but it didn't seem very low dre

My buddy and i made our first trip of the year to watkins (we usually go 2-4 times each winter). we were on the water about an hour before sunset, and it was a good thing too because we had numerous motor issues. fortunately, we were fishing by first light where we thought we should be (near the salt plant). I had 3 on: about a 5 pounder that self-released while jumping, an 18' that got off at the boat, and one 18" in the boat. We fished till 4p with only those 3 hits. We spent most of our time in water deeper than 50', as we had done well like that in past winters. At the launch, i ran into TROUTMAN 87 - always nice to meet a board member in person. He told us we should have been much shallower. Oh well....at least i got to fish!!! and that little LL tasted about as good as any fish i can remember! dre
