  1. Hi all, i shoot a G5 Quest QS33 and have been shooting Gold Tip XT hunters with 4" vanes along with Grim Reaper mechanical broadheads. I have been happy with that setup - have killed my first 4 deer with bow with that setup. The only reason i'm considering switching to 2" vanes is that i frequently see the 2 inchers on sale for $25 for 6 vs the $45 for 6 4"vanes. I have heard that the 2" vanes are better for fixed blade broadheads. Is there any reason i should not get the 2inchers with what i shoot? thanks for your input, andre
  2. Hello All, i'm gonna make my first trip to Indian Lake in mid-september and am curious if any of you has had any success fishing it that time of year. My understanding is that it has lake trout, rainbows, browns, and landlocks, but i don't know how common it is to catch any of the non-lake trout salmonids (I did my first ADK fishing last year at Raquette lake hoping for a nice brookie and only caught a few small lakers...). any info is greatly appreciated - from what salmonids are most likely caught, to locations, specific lures, etc. thanks! andre
  3. thanks very much to all who replied! dre
  4. i ran dipseys with flasher/fly combos with wire yesterday for the first time in 2 years (hadn't been on lake O for 2 yrs - i mostly fish the fingerlakes) we caught some fish off the wire, but i don't really like fishing with wire (it isn't pliable and doesn't come off the reel as nicely as braid). My understanding is that wire helps get a little deeper with dipseys. What are thr advantages of using wire, COMPARED TO USING 80 POUND BRAID with the dipsey flasher combo? thanks, andre
  5. cndg troller - thanks very much!
  6. i registered on 6/23 via the web (received a receipt from papal that my $30 was deducted from my account for the red cross) but have received NOTHING from the redcross - no receipt, no registration # etc. I have been making calls to the redcross but the person i need to speak with hasn't been there and isn't returning my calls... anyone else having similar problems? dre
  7. Anyone know approximately how many anglers will be fishing the red cross derby? just curious, dre
  8. hi all, the redcross will be my first derby and i'll be jigging for lakers. I don't have a livewell and i understand that dead fish tend to lose some of their weight. Normally, when i catch a laker, i cut their throat to bleed 'em and put them directly on ice or in ice water (keeps them fresh for the table). do you think a large laker will stay alive if i keep water in a large cooler cold (around 50 degrees by adding ice throughout the day)? any other thoughts about how to keep a laker alive without a livewell? many thanks, dre
  9. I've been doing some initial research on the fishawk X4. I bet me trolling catch rate would increase but $600 is a lot of money. Reading the x4 manual, they say that repairs for either the probe or the display is a "flat rate" $185 - that seems like a lot too. for those who have had the x4 for a while, how reliable has it been? have you needed any repairs? they say the probe is "bulletproof" - have any of you ran it (accidentally) into bottom? still working? many thanks for any info - i'm leary of the "reviews" i read that are not on forums like this. dre
  10. at least some of us like to troll AND jig (usually not at the same time). I would jig all the time except i want a variety of species dre
  11. this will be my first derby ever! i'll be fishing seneca (if winds permit - i have a 16' with 9.9hp) good luck to all, dre
  12. i've been thinking about getting an X-4 also, but i fish hemlock lake mostly and like to hug the structure, and with hemlock's funky structure and being less shallow than seneca, cayuga, etc., i'm afraid that even if the X-4 is a few feet above my rigger ball, that i could damage or break the x-4 when i hit bottom with my ball. Is the X-4 easily detachable from the rigger cable? dre
  13. yep - you got balls man! I have trolled out of my yak, but not that far on the Big O and certainly not towing a big dipsey! I've never heard of anyone having sonar on their yak, but that's very cool and yes, you earned those fish! Have you caught any big kings out of your yak? i bet they'd pull you all over the place tight lines, dre
  14. Hi all, i have never fished a derby and even after reading the brochure for the red cross derby, i'm not sure what the rules are for winning. I know there are 2 lunker categories - the biggest bass and the biggest salmonid when the lunker prize. Regarding lake trout (and other salmonid categories) - do you weigh in a 5 fish limit (or 3 fish for lakers) or is that also just the 1 largest fish for each salmonid. i plan to primarily jig, so i will probably only catch lakers. In short, when i weigh in, should i just bring my biggest laker or all 3 lakers? thanks, andre
  15. what tournament takes place June 25, 26? how can i register for it and what are the details? thanks, dre
  16. Hi all, i've never fished a trout derby and am curious about the Red Cross Derby. Will someone give me some details, such as: Dates entry fee is it one fingerlake or all of them? all salmonids or just lake trout? what are the prizes for? biggest fish only? how many get prizes (biggest only or top 5 etc) many thanks, dre marquis
  17. sorry about that, but those were the words told to me. The person i spoke to was relaying a message from someone else in the office - i bet it means NO WAKE dre
  18. I just spoke to the Livingston County Sheriff's office and they confirmed that Conesus IS open to boat traffic but you MUST keep your wake low. dremarquis
  19. Tom, that was a great story/report - sorry the catching wasn't better for ya. dre
  20. you are correct - the permit is no longer required since the DEC gained ownership of the lands/lakes i've heard that a few people have taken lakers thru the ice but i went out last weekend with electronics, drilled about 40 holes and never saw a fish or had a bite andre
  21. oh yeah - congrats on the good catch steve! maybe i'll see you on conesus friday midnight... dre
  22. hey trouthunter, where did you read that they stocked LLs in hemlock last spring? thanks, dre
  23. i shot at 3 deer with my bow this year - all with grim reapers. The first was at 12 yards. I didn't recover it, but my friend shot it less than 24 hours later. I had hit it in the shoulder and we never found the arrow! (and my bow is nearly 300 fps)! the second 2 deer i shot were both pass thrus - 15 and 35 yds. i don't know what to think of that first shot and it not going thru the first shoulder, even if it wasn't a pass thru. andre
  24. i have to second Chowder's point. Venison ribs are fantastic if you smoke 'em. Don't eat the fat/suet, but the meat is great! dre
