I run seaguar..... I've never had problems with it.... In the spring I run #12 on my planer rods and sinker rigs.... #15 on my Chinook divers and short lead cores ... Summer I switch out to #20 seaguar on all spoon rods ... If the fish are negative I leader back to #17lb.... If I'm running spoons off my divers in the summer, I run #25.... I know I'm kinda OCD with different leader poundage.... But small details put more fish in the net... Hope this helps -
I've actually had guests request Lake Trout... I've eaten the smaller ones and was surprised how they tasted.... Now don't get me wrong, they are not a walleye or a Perch .. but I wasn't expecting how those smaller ones tasted. You're 100% right on when you mention the finger lakes LTs. -
Catch and release .... Interesting topic... There are lots of factors that are involved...I guess it all depends on the time of year, water temps, depth of fishing,where the fish was hooked, how long was the fight, did the guest drop the fish on its head when we took the photo? ( I might be forgetting something). I specifically ask guests " Are we keeping fish today" as I am setting the first rod. In a perfect world.... If the reply is no, then I take extra time to ensure the fish is in good condition. If the guest doesn't want a picture, I won't even take the fish out of the net... Unhook, and flip the net over .. so minimal protective slime is lost. If I can tow the fish behind the boat and try to revive it, I will. Sometimes that's not possible .. I have no issues with releasing fish.... But I refuse to release fish that are floaters....That is not ethical... That brings up an interesting debate... If you are out on the Lake ( Charter or recreation)... And you box a limit catch... Do you still remain out fishing? If the answer is " Yes", what do you do if you gill hook a fish and it's going to die? Do you keep it even though you got a box and now you're over the limit? Do you let the fish float? Is it wonton waste to knowingly let that fish float off dead? I don't know ... Ethically I couldn't let a fish float off only to be scavenged by seagulls... Many ways to look at it.... I know lots of charter captains who still love the sport and love watching folks catch fish. However there has to be tough decisions made on the water to ensure guests have a good time, while ensuring there are more fish to catch in the future. I don't think it's a business decision, but more of a moral decision.... J.m.o. Be well guys and tight lines

If you start running spoons ... Remember the sink factor when deploying .. thumb that spool ... Also I forgot to mention speed... 2.5. To 2.7... I'm cooking when I have the metal out .. it's great to cover water... But the downside is making turns ... Most of my turns are fast In order to keep from hanging up the inside rigs.... On another note... I was in my tackle storage area and found a box of Alpena diamonds and Andy reekers . . I might have to blow the dust off those suckers and give them some soak time ....lol

The thing you have to remember is the conditions... If it's late winter / Spring , you need to realize no one will be out there to help you. The water is 32-34 degrees. If you go in the drink , you have about ten minutes until your adios. Ice fished with buddies on their aluminum boats in the early season... The safety factor is always in the back of my mind. As far as fishing the line, figure out the wind direction... If it's a slight west breeze, fish the East side.... For example .. I'd be very cautious about going out there...

Go with the best you can afford.... We have used all the brands of reels on the market... In my opinion, Saltist and Tekotas are pretty close .. I currently run Saltist 40s. I put about 400 ft of 20 lb backer, then 1000 ish ft of wire. The 30s will work just fine with no backer and 1000 ft of wire. I like the retrieval rate of the Saltist 40s ...
