  6. http://geneseecharterboat.com/pen-rearing/ https://www.facebook.com/Genesee-Charter-Boat-Association-199355023482457/ Well considering the club has a website and a facebook page.....I'd say thats pretty good. The GCBA is for Captains and non captains to be part of. Its doesn't matter which end of the fence your on, we all want a better fishery. Rec guys, Charter guys, and stream guys are all welcome. The club is really evolving and is gaining new memebers all the time. So there is not misinformation out there, the club does more than Charter business. Yes there is talk about the Charter industy as a whole, planning for events like the round table discussions, and the flea market ( Held yesterday). The initial brainstorming for the Monroe County Offshore Classic was done at the GCBA meetings. New angling techniques, fishing reports ( and yes we talk about trib fishing as well). A few of our members travel throughout the United States to meet with Natural Reasouce experts. Its really facinating to hear back from them on different stocking theories and baitfish management ideas. If your looking for indepth angling talk, most of the Captains stay after the meeting for an impromptu B.S. session. And finally the pen rearing program.... from November to well into the Spring ,the Pen Rearing program is an important part of the monthly meeting.... So.... my advice to all anglers.... don't put your hands in your pockets, whistle, and stare up at the ceiling... get involved in your local fishing clubs...Elotsa, Lotsa, and the GCBA are always looking for members. 7. When I went to Nodak, we were in the extreme north part... Not many pheasants, but a pile of Sharptails. Boy are they easy...awesome for my young lab. Shot regular waterfowl ( puddlers and Divers) but shot some cackler honkers and some snows.... Sweet trip but an A$$ kicker of a drive. Sent from my VS987 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  8. Nice swan..... Must have looked like a 747 falling out of the sky... I've always wanted to shoot one of those, but the lack of wall space kind of puts the kibosh on that. Been to NoDak a few times myself. Awesome waterfowl and upland hunting up there. Sent from my VS987 using Lake Ontario United mobile app

  11. I guess having a lake charter boat isn't worthy of being a "known business".... You said it yourself, all input from all areas of the lake are important. All areas.... The DEC had several meetings over that past year....EVERYONE ...was invited to attend. I don't think we have ever had a "Charter stakeholders" meeting... Even our club meetings are open to non Charter boat rec fisherman. So now a charter boat guy finds out about the meeting, requests to attend and is denied? That looks funny.... Look at it from the outside if that's possible. Sent from my VS987 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  12. It appears Canada is not having the same issue, maybe you guys should consider there is somthing gone wrong with the washington strain steelhead currently being stocked. As anybody knows, mutations happen in nature. Certain traits can get "bred out". Look at the Kings.... back when you were a Lake Charter Captain, kings in the upper 30s were relatively common. Now if you get one or two 30s a year, its a good year. As far as this year....ive been out on a boat already. The browns Ive personally seen were the footballs of old days. Fat, healthy, little marks on them. I cleaned two and they were full of Gobies and smelt. I agree we all need to work together, however hearing those statements the other night certainally proves that personal agendas will take precedent over the overall health of the lake. 13. The bottom line is there is a small group of Trib guys pushing an agenda to get rid of Salmon stocking.... They showed their cards the other night....Actually saying " Since there is Natural Reproduction, Why still stock Salmon".... Then stated that most Trib anglers prefer Steelhead.... Another False statement proven by the numbers of people who partake in Trib fishing from Sept to Nov. Just because a guy doesn't have a fancy pants Orvis reel doesn't mean he doesn't count as a Trib angler. Yes there is always poaching, but there are good people who like salmon fishing tribs.. Just by pure numbers of foot traffic during those months says volumes. Those statements made at that meeting show exactly how selfish these people are... Well the pen programs will continue as always.... Kings AND the beloved Steelhead will be raised by Charter Captains as well as recreational anglers. By the way I stalked some facebook pages last night.... For guys who don't want kings stocked, they sure catch a lot and display big grins for the camera....SMH Sent from my VS987 using Lake Ontario United mobile app

  17. Not a target species! Exactly Brian. I don't think I've run a surface sucker program in a few years.... And If I kept a half a dozen Steel last year, that was a lot. Sent from my VS987 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  18. Well.... Here's the thing... All these pen rearing programs ( of which have been documented to improve survival rates) are predominately managed by Lake Anglers.... Its always been that way. We hold charity events, go to meetings, put nets in, feed the fish x amount of times a day, release the fish, pull the nets, clean em off, put them away.... Its a ton of work.. Now anyone who knows anything about fishing the lake knows Steelhead are rarely targeted.... I'd say 95% of my steelhead catches are by products of my King program. So, If I were a die hard Steelhead guy, I would want more kings in the lake to take the pressure off the steelhead. As fun as they are to catch, most people leave the dock looking for a trophy king... Same goes for browns, however I will admit I love to fish them.... Probably my favorite. I have fished tribs before. Just not my bag fishing for fish that are confined... Now don't get me wrong, I don't knock people who trib fish and its only a small group of anglers lobbying against Kings. I commend the DEC for relative transparency relating to this issue... Again, I was very happy I could attend and support our comrades on the east end of our lake. Sent from my VS987 using Lake Ontario United mobile app

  22. Brian.... Lets be fair.... Its not all trib guys who are hating on King stocking.... Most tributary guys I know like catching all kinds of fish, including Kings. Its just selfish of a certain group of anglers to want it all one way.... Sent from my VS987 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  23. Braved the storm last night and went to the State of the Lake in Pulaski..Much of the data was carbon copy of the Rochester meeting. There was a little more discussion on warm water species ( bass and walleye for example). The DEC has some plans to aquire properties along the salmon river which will be used for angler access and new parking areas. During the question and answer, a group of obvious tributary anglers were asking why are there any kings being stocked in the lake because of natural reproduction... Answer from the DEC was because the natural reproduction numbers fluctuate from year to year and are not reliable. The same group stated that more people want steelhead than kings. At this point they brought up the angler hours....the angler hours on the tribs were more than the lake.... According to the DEC, the angler hours on the tribs was more than the lake. When pressed about the number of hours during prime Salmon time Vs the rest of the season, the DEC stated that data was un available. The DEC stated that they would do a more comprehensive creel survey in the future to include times of the year. The question came up about the number of steelhead taken ( harvested) on the tribs vs the lake. The DEC stated that the number taken on the tribs far exceeded the number taken on the lake. The topic of stress placed on spawning fish being caught and released numerous times also came up again. There is obviously a group of trib anglers who wish the Salmon stocking stopped all together. I'm not sure why since this is a King Salmon driven fishery ( the hours on the tribs will show that. And everyone knows how busy tribs are during the King run). The same group wants the limit of Steelhead decreased and the size limit increased on the lake and tribs. More regulations when the trib anglers have been documented as bigger harvesters of steelhead than the Lake anglers. I would also bet that out of this same group, not one is involved in helping with pen rearing programs. I know for a fact that in Rochester, it is run by Lake guys. The kicker is we ( and many other ports) raise steelhead. The same steelhead everyone gets to enjoy every late fall and winter) Is there an easy answer? Nope..... but a small group of people pushing their agenda on to everyone is definetly not. A collaberative effort of trib guys and Lake guys is an excellent start in my opinion. Mr. Lapan made an excellent comment at the end of the meeting... somthing to the effect that the fishery is not just for one group of anglers or another. Its for everyone to enjoy. I couldnt agree more. Working together and working smarter is the best plan to ensure our fishery remains the world class fishery it is today.....
