Well, Rochester continues to remain the sleeper port of Lake Ontario.....Today was nothing less than spectacular....Just about everything I put down took shots but there were some stand outs....DW Super slim Acid Rains parked at 12 and 16 ft early, then slightly deeper when the sun got high. Slide divers with Finger Lakes HiVis Alewife and Bob Barker 85 foot back then 20 ft from the boat on a #4 setting....NO ring by the way..... 3 colors and 5 colors with froggy spoons took plenty of rips as well. Had over 25 Kings to net, lost probably another 6......I will take cold winters anytime, if we can have this kind of fishing in the central basin. Word of caution......watch the trees coming out of the Genny.....With all the rain and the fact that the mouth of the Genny is getting dredged, there are a ton of "Season Enders" floating around.

Thanks for the kind words guys.....Chris, absolutely no problem....Im going to try some new "tricks" with divers this season. If they work out, I will post it up.....In theory it should work...LOL......In theory.... Rob.....it was cool to fish with you man....Talk about getting thrown in the fire...LOL.....I bet you had no idea what you were getting in to... Besides this past Saturday, this spring has been the best season started Ive had in 20 years.....Hopefully the good fishing continues......Tight lines boys!

This is going to sound like a broken record but here it goes anyway...... I had the privilege of fishing on team Rigger Us ( Capt. John, JakeyBaby, ReelyHooked and Draggin Ballz) at the WHI this past weekend. After fishing two days at home for the American Red Cross Casting For Caring, I Joined Capt. John for some pre fishing Wednesday, Thursday , and Friday......Wednesday we ran 17 miles east of Wilson and set up in 10-14 feet....we tried to maintain that depth and trolled some "split shot" rigs , flat lines, and some slide divers.....Stand outs were the Finger Lakes Bob Barker (Small size) the DW SSW ( there you go Yankee) and a large 1980's black and silver Rebel...lol.....Talk about turning the clock back!!! We had 5 kings a pile of Cohos and Browns and a gorgeous Atlantic....Stopped counting after 45 bites... Having decent intel on the eastern area, we ran to the Red can and took a look around....Holy Icebergs batman!!! The water was 37 degrees on top.....We slow trolled back to Wilson and only managed some chickens.... Friday we ran back to the East and ventured even farther....we found a nice bubble of 48 degree water and worked that area most of the day...SSW was the man....Black and silver lighter spoons worked well also.. We caught some real nice Kings Friday.....I wasn't overly confident because there were some great anglers in the field , but I thought we would be a contender.... Saturday comes and we head back East (with the rest of the fleet) and we set up on our waypoints....Cold water got blown in and screwed up the inside bite...we picked and ran to Johnson's creek and found things the same....way too cold.... We bounced around looking for fish, but we ended up with the goose egg for the board...... Like the old saying goes, that's fishing.....I don't really feel bad now that I look back....We stuck with a plan, and we made decisions as a team.....Not to mention there were some excellent teams who also came up short....Congrats to the winners, They seemed like really good guys. Tight lines guys......

Rochester report 4/27

I tried the P line Flouro Clear.......SUCKS!!!! In the past five years I can count on one hand the number of break offs Ive had with Seguar .....Break offs from just a fish, not from wrapping around another line, cable, or prop ect.....Sunday I had three straight up crack offs on screamers.....No tangles and I check leaders after every fish.....I guarantee 100% is was from poor line.....That being said, I can only blame myself because I should have stuck with what worked for me all these years, rather than try something new......We all have our opinions as to what will work and what won't. The best advice I can give out is to stick with what works.....If you put fish in the boat with straight green mono, have at it! If your down with running flouro, cool....just stay away from P line......LOL......Oh by the way, I spent the morning rigging all my rods with Seguar.......Tight lines boys! -

yea buddy.......21 lb king is a good one for the spring.....man how sweet would it be if the Spring Derby King came from Roch? Lol....... -
Is spring always this good?

usually it starts off like gang busters....then it slows down as we get closer to May.....this year we are dealing with the after effects of a brutal winter. I'd be willing to bet the gobie population took a hit in the deep freeze. Now we have cooler water with (possibly) slightly lower numbers of forage fish.....awesome for us.....I'm pleasantly surprised at the number of kings around the central part of the lake.......hopefully this keeps up till the June transition... -
It seems like fishing is spectacular out there all along the shoreline. Rochester was no exception today. We ran stick baits off our boards (100-120 ft back) slide divers pulling Finger lakes Tackle UV spoons ( 75 ft back and 12-18 ft from boat). And some DW Super slims off our cannons ( 65 ft back). I can't say there was any set pattern as everything took shots. I will say that the larger Bomber in "cindy" pattern was very active....Our final numbers were + 45 bites for roughly 35 with a giant Small Mouth Bass. There are quite a few kings around and had three wreck my leaders.... I used some P line 12 lb leaders and I'm not impressed.....broke off three different kings on that stuff. I'm stripping off all of it , and I'm going back to Seguar. Good luck out there.....

Been using Slide divers for many years. Excellent on shallow spring spreads, awesome on off shore steelhead, and staging kings when combat trolling. Going to try them on my wires this year for more stealthy presentation. Sent from my VS920 4G using Lake Ontario United mobile app -

Seriously? There is nobody more passionate about the Lake than me....not for nothing but the LOC doesn't change the way I fish... Or even why I fish....its all about giving people a good time, and enjoying what I do.....its not about tourneys.....yes they are fun, but let's remember why we all fish..... I think what he means by " on the X" is....being exactly where the birds want to land. If your "on the x" then there isn't a need for a huge spread. I don't hunt geese anymore, but this thinking is right on point.. Especially in the Sept season... Sent from my VS920 4G using Lake Ontario United mobile app

All about.....not saying this about you at all... There are guys who have constantly whined about the rule change since it was announced... It is what it is. We either accept it and enter anyway, or save your entry fee....I compare it to the new Pro Am format. I personally hate the new prize set up, so in turn I don't fish em. The Lake Derby has definitely evolved from when I fished the very first ESLO in the 70s to the current LOC....the jury is still out for me on the new format.
