  1. Over the last few days, I have been fighting the urge to post up my experiences with this new Pro Am and how things went down....Lets just say I allowed my emotions to tone down a bit..... Friday night I went to the Captains meeting to get a first hand explanation of the "official rules". It was explained that the tournament would be hinged on if NOAA had issued a Small Craft Advisory....If they did, we would not be leaving the dock......Wait a minute!!! When I signed our team up on line I didn't see that rule! There were a few more rule changes and then the explanation of the "Trophy box, and Classic Box" format. Another thing mentioned was if the tournament was a no go , then the entry fees would not be refunded and would be applied to next years Pro Am entry . I knew that rule all ready, but I did not know the tournament would be decided by NOAA ( we all know how accurate their forecasts are)...... Saturday morning came and the lake was kind of sporty....we were delayed every two hours for the rest of the day until 3 o'clock when the day was finally cancelled. As the day went on, the Lake layed down flat .....It wouldn't be so bad, but we had to sit and watch the Lake flat as a pancake and several smaller boats launch and leave the harbor......Very very frustrating. As some tournament officials were walking the dock, I discussed with them the fact that Sunday's forecast was looking just as bad and that there was a real possibility that the tournament would be totally cancelled. With the rule that the prize money would go into escrow for next year, it looking like I was going to be out my $690.00 entry fee. I brought this up to the guy and he said it was what it was and that is how it goes..... You can imagine how aggravated I was at this point. Sunday morning came and the wind was just as the forecast said...out of the west ( much rougher than it was Saturday)....We left port to find some nice three footers. Ran to the north fighting some big waves and fished the rest of the day....As far as fishing, it was decent...Lots of steelies but at the end of the day we only weighed 5 fish..... After the weigh in it was posted that we were in tenth place....Cool.....hey wait a minute the numbers didn't match up....We were in fact not in the money. Yup, I was less than impressed...... I had high hopes for this year....As far as our team performance, I was happy. We boated the ones that counted and I wouldn't have changed a thing that we did. I was not impressed with sitting at the dock on Saturday. Nor was I happy with the weigh in snafu. The thing that all you tournament competitors need to realize is, if there is a Small Craft advisory, you will not be fishing....and If the tournament gets cancelled, you will not be afforded a refund. Will I return as a competitor in any of the pro ams? Ask me next winter......

  5. I prefer to go with 30Lb Big game....I fill up to 8 rods with 30# and the Big game is pretty economical. Don't get me wrong, Ande line is excellent line. You should be fine with it.....My first and only experience with FF was a break off on a big king and a whole bunch of line twisting....Take it for what its worth, I tried FF when it first came out. Im sure they have made improvements since then......Good luck.....

  10. Brian.....sent you a PM
  11. The thing you need to remember is certain spoons run better at specific speeds. For instance...you would have poor results running a sutton spoon at 2.5 to 2.7 MPH when 28s and mags run well. And likewise when your running 1.5 to 2.0 for sutton spoons the Mags or 28s would be barely moving....Obviously the speeds mentioned are only to explain my theory...When I pick spoons I look at the water temps, the weather ( cloudy/sunny) how deep my baits will run as well as what species Im targeting..... In my spread I usually run many different spoons....Dreamweavers, NKs, Stingers and lately Ive always had at least one Yeck out there.....Different guys have their go too Spoons...For example I would be willing to bet that Rick (Yankee Troller) will always have a Sea Sick Waddler NK out.....Me I will always have a at least one Yeck Obama out. I think you would be handicapping yourself if you ran only one particular brand out.... Ive had days where I ran a NK spook, a Stinger spook and a DW spook.....I got all my hits on the stingers...the fish wouldn't touch the others....the next day I couldn't get bit on a stinger....its just the flavor of the day..... Your confidence lures should be a starting point for you...Don't be afraid to change things up...you may be surprised.....Good luck this season and tight lines......
  12. Sweet Shark....Congrats......
  13. Thanks brother Bruce.....Cant wait to get back out

  16. Ive had a cold water experience while duck hunting last January...waded out and slipped off a ledge into 15 feet of water.....Sucks really bad...The water had to have been close to 32 degrees..lots of floating ice....The first thing you realize is the extreme shock running trough your body...Like electricity....Then your body aches....I was only in the water for about a minute. Kept my head together and got to wade-able depths.....I can see how a person could panic and make the wrong decisions.....Another soul claimed by Lake O.....Thoughts go out to the family........
  17. Calm seas Captain jose.....The fish gods shined down on you in life, and I'm sure they welcomed you to the next one......
  18. Oh yea......that's what I'm talking about......great idea..... [ Post made via Android ]
  19. Redneck......There isn't a day that goes buy that I don't think about the trip.....I am extremely lucky to have gone, and that my wife is the coolest..... I just got off the phone with the Outfitter ( Capt. Moe Neal) and he told me that everyone who went up to hunt with him this year was 100% on Kings.....The beauty of that place, the friendly people and the raw power of the Bearing Sea was truly breath taking.....When the new season of Deadliest Catch starts next Tuesday, Its going to remind me of the dangers and the adventures of St. Paul Island... Anyone who is a serious waterfowler should look into this trip. Captain Moe, Captain Jeff and Guide Dustin really worked their tails off to give me a safe, but memorable trip........I will go back some day........
  20. Gambler is correct...The 30s are perfect for 1000 ft (or so) of wire....I just rigged up two ten cores with plenty of power pro backing on 40s....it went on with no problem......You will love the reels....Especially with slide cheater bites and you can really pick up the slack when the rod goes off.....Im glad I switched ....
