Took out my buddies to the inside 40 ft area. Set up my usual spread, Squaws and Scoter....What a difference a few days are.....There was very little flying except the massive waves of migrating red Breasted Mergansers....If we were shooting Lawn darts , it would have been a slaughter. Saw very few Oldsquaws and only a few flocks of Scoters. We dumped a whole flock of 4 and two got away utilizing their Michael Phelps impression.....Great day on the lake.......Cold weather any day now! Shoot em in the fatch!

That's what I'm talking about! Good job on the drakes...... I was just commenting to a buddy of mine about how tough some of those sea ducks really are......I swear they have on flack jackets. Great job man, and those are some beauty drakes..... Headed out this am.....hope the birds cooperate

What's every one's opinion on this Dog for waterfowl
Missdemeanor replied to flashpoint's topic in Waterfowl / Bird Game
SS.....that is a hen can.....I admit I shot a hen, we normally hold off for the bulls, but it was the last day of the first season. Two of my buddies are Lawn Dart shooting fools.....hence the pile of commons mergs. The drakes are neat though...... Sweet Golden bro....your exactly right about them being overlooked. They have great temperments too. Congrats on the new hunting partner... -
After deer season...take a road kill and stake it down in an area you can watch from...go out a half hour before sunset and stay about two hours after that.....Time to start eradicating some of those vermin...... I absolutely HATE coyotes..... Lots of fun when the #4 buck smashes them......Good luck and glad you found the rack.......

What's every one's opinion on this Dog for waterfowl

Pete....she sure is a pretty girl. I love the grey dogs. As far as bloodlines, it does help having a hunting line in the parents, but it's not necessary....I have a Choc lab out of Krestland kennels in Victor NY. My boy is out of an English show line. I went to a trainer ( Jim Beverly oak field NY) and he told me that all labs have a natural tendency to retrieve. It's just conditioning that ability to a hunting scenario. I worked with Jim and my dog from May to September. In October of his first year I had him in North Dakota duck hunting....83 retrieves in a week! I was proud to say the least. Now I must say he will not win any titles, and he works at his own pace, but he brings back the birds. I hunt him in some harsh conditions in our late season.....lake Ontario, and the upper Niagara in January can be a bit chilly..... As far as chessies.....they are totally awesome hunting machines....you just have to do your homework. A friend of mine has Two chessies and they are unreal upland and water dogs. Good luck with your search for your new hunting partner. -
100 fow...... but the other day it was shallower. Around the river you really need to go way off shore for the scoters. We use drift rigs for that deep.100 feet or shallower the whole smash goes out with anchors. [ Post made via Android ]

Steve.......shot the Remington hyper sonic stuff today....even through my Beretta, the recoil was ridiculous.....not sure about the pattern, but it knocks the hell out of them....if you do venture out, the inside waters were swarmed with squaws. We went out to over 100 ft for a mixed bag. Lake was a sheet of glass. There was a weird current that kept us moving around a lot. Not optimum conditions, but we worked with what we had.....

The weather was kinda Too nice today....Flat lake and spooky Birds....We managed to Scrape a few White Wings and some squaws.....Man there are a ton of OldSquaws out there now....
-
Ray...your exactly right...the Mrs. And I just had that talk yesterday as a matter of fact. Bottom line I said was..." it's the freakin Bearing Sea....I have to have the best possible gear for safety reasons". So far that has worked Lund....I will pick up some BBB and give her a whirl. I spoke with the outfitter and he told me to leave the expensive Eyetalian guns at home and bring the workhorse. Lots of freezing spray to play havoc on the actions. 53 days and counting....

Lund....just brought the widow maker (870 superman) to Beikirch's for a full tune up and cleaning. She was a little worn out and wouldn't eject 3.5 inch shells. I'm going to get a couple tubes and different ammo when I pick it up.....good pattern at 45 yards is my goal..... I'm probably going to look at a mod or mid range tube...... Going out tomorrow for Scoters...trying the high velocity stuff......

Happy Birthday While Yer On The Lam

Happy Birthday Cap.......One more day closer to retirement....... -
yea man.....Just picked up that rig this year. I have extra gas tanks so I can venture far from port...The boat is a starcraft superfisherman. Nice and deep. She will take any waves I'm willing to hunt in. The Blind was custom made. The color seems to be working. Not that Scoters are a true test( they are pretty dumb birds). The true test will be Bills and redheads later this year.....The birds offshore never expect anything when they fly into the Dekes. I position the boat about 30 yards from my strings. I have enough boat and decoy line available to hunt in 200 ft if need be. The majority of the shots are 30 yards....Some passing over the decoys, Some feet down....It really depends on how many are in the group. 5 or less scoters will lock in and land with the blocks, over 5 and they usually just bank over the dekes and you wack em as they fly by the boat at 20 yrds. The birds today, totally flew circles around the boat to get at the blocks.....It also helps to have oversize dekes....I made my own that are twice the size of goose floaters...Really draws them in nice......Shoot straight man.....Hope this helps.

Kevin...I sent you a PM..... Ray believe it or not your not far off...... Man are those birds hard to kill. Knock em down and you have to smash em 3 times on the water.....
-
Paul.....All those bird up there are mounters LOl ....From what I hear the Harlequins are a dime a dozen.... Kings are around, its just being lucky to have them come into range. I'm not anticipating anything but having a good time and eating some fresh from the ocean opilio crab. If Im lucky enough to harvest some trophies...Bonus! Paulie I will call you when I get back.....

Two hour hunt out on Ontario...Lots of Sea ducks around. Big flocks of Oldsquaws....Most of the Scoter flocks we decoyed were White wings....However an extremely rare Surf Scoter came into a HOT L.Z.....What a great two hours on the lake...... Just gets me even more fired up for the Alaska trip.....Lead em far boys!
-
Scotty.....that was totally unintentional. Lol......57 days and counting. All my airfare and hotel stays in anchorage are squared away..... I think I'm actually going to try some expensive non toxic...anybody have any experience with heavy metal or heavy shot? If so what chokes do you use? Looking to be able to reach out as far as 50 yards with a decent pattern.....I normally wouldn't shoot past 35, but we are talking king eiders...lol.....
-
The Eiders were killed last January with Captain Brian Rhodes of The Swampers Guide service in Rhode Island. The white wing was killed in Lake Ontario. Just a little somthing to get you die hard waterfowlers going.

The other night I received a call from a guy...he introduced himself as Captain Moe Neale of Alaskan Eider outfitters .he explained that I was the winner of a five day duck hunt from a raffle I entered 4 months ago.....at first I thought it was one of my idiot co workers busting my chops, but I soon realized that this offer was legit. The details of the hunt are I would be hunting King Eiders, Pacific Eiders, harlequins, Aleutian teal, and Scoters off St. Paul island in the Bearing sea.....the same place they film the Deadliest Catch crab fishing show on the discovery channel..... I am thankful for this opportunity, and I am lucky to have such an understanding wife....... Stay tuned for reports and photos.....

Florida keys
Missdemeanor replied to britty's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Hawks Kay is awesome.....I've never stayed there, but I've seen the area. I've stayed at Holiday Ise in Islamorada. It was a decent place and there is a marina loaded with charter boats. Right across the bridge ( walking distance) is whale harbor. They have a good fleet of charter boas as well. I love the keys and the fishing there is incredible.
