  1. The future of the lake is looking a little rough right now. The thing that guys have to remember is that mother nature is like a Marine....Improvises and adapts. A friend of mine reminded me of the gloom and doom predictions regarding the zebra mussels. I'm still waiting for those guys to be right...LOL.... Maybe a little more catch and release will help...... Good luck in the up coming season..... Nice catch....Eyes aren't as good as they used to be....
  2. Man....Great trip. It looks like you were in Islamorada...Am I right? I fed some Tarpon when I was down there a few years ago. Awesome fishing....Thanks for sharing my man.
  3. Oh boy.....Thats a tough one brother. Some guys excel at doing fish, other guys like Deer,Birds, and predators.... Heres a couple of Kings I had Done by Streeter's Taxidermy in Williamson NY.....The Fall King was 37# and the summer King was 40#. Good Luck with the upcoming season...........
  4. Went out at 0'dark 30 and blew past the combat trollers. We started in 80 ft and found the Temperature was down around 60-65 ft. We had 4 Kings (teens) and another rip. All 4 fish were on glow spoons(fishlander cotton candy, NK wonder bread). We picked up and headed North west out to around 200. Picked up 6 more kings. No real big ones, but the teenages put up nice fights. We ended up 10 for 11 and at the dock by 11:30. Now comes the fun part........Soteing all the stuff and yankin her out of the water. The one thing I'm convinced about is the " Less is more" concept. What I mean is, when the fish are diving out of your riggers and are refusing to hit, Try running less riggers. Today I ran 4 riggers, a wire dipsey and a 10 color. When I noticed the fish diving, I only ran 2 riggers with pinned cheaters. Thant was the ticket for me today. The mupped Wonder Bread NK was the cat's pajamas. Well its off to get ready for waterfowl season, and of course get ready to chase some Muskies. Have a great winter boys and I'm sure I'll see you in the spring............Matt French
  5. Could not have said it better BP.......
  6. I can't even begin to count up the equipment Ive lost in 30 years of salmon fishing. Really sucks! That downrigger fiasco would have put me right over the deep end. I feel bad for the poor guy who lost this rig. Hopefully he sees my post and I can return it to him......
  7. Hey boys lest try to catch and release the muskies and not fillet them up. Those fish are a delicate resource now that VHS had taken its hit on the population. If you manage top catch a nice one and want to mount it,try to get real good close ups of the coloration. Take numerous measurements of the length and girth. Let that big girl go and have a fiberglass replica done. I'll get off my soapbox now and I'm sorry for the rant, but C&R is a big topic with me and I practice it with all my fishing...even with the salmon. Now lets break out the steel leaders. Sharpen the hooks on the plowbaits and Believers and get after em.
  8. Anybody loose a rod and reel in front of Rochester this week? We hooked one and its sitting in my garage right now. Just keeping someone's rig is not my style! If you did Pm me with a description and Id be happy to return it......................Matt French
  9. Thats a crack head for ya! Those A-holes are doing burglaries and car larcenies in my neighborhood as well. I was the victim not too long ago. Boy I would have loved to have caught those jerks doing it! Hey man, such is life in the fabulous Greater Rochester Area. Could have been interesting if you would have caught that Pr@%$.......I know how you Hamlin boys handle business......
  10. I have 2 Kings done by Streeter and they look awesome. Tough to find a better Fish Taxidermist.
  11. Looks to be a hen Chinook to me. Usually this time of year it is real easy to tell the difference. The Bucks usually have a pronounced hook jaw. The hens usually have a stub nose. Nice catch by the way........
  12. I agree with Ray...Black or the clear ones....... I have a whole box full of crazy colored ones Ive never caught a fish on...
  13. Might be in the market for an autopilot for next year. Any suggestions as to a decent unit? Which ones should I stay away from? Thanks guys.
  14. Sponge , Ive had that happen to me a bunch of times. Especially in the spring when the kings are at their best as far as fighting. Now real big kings will do the same. The two biggest kings I have to date ( 40# summer Hen and 37# Fall male) both made fast runs to the boat and then dove for the bottom. Those fish stayed straight under the boat and I really had to horse them up. 99% of the time big browns will hit, make a solid but short run, and then take off out to one side of the boat. Ive never had a brown charge the boat. Lakers...well you probably know what they are all about. Coho's and Steelies are both aerial artsits. My money would be on a king. By the way We did the off shore thing on Saturday and It was well worth the trip. We had one major (probably 25lbs) with a 23 inch lamprey on him. We also did a bunch of 3 yr old kings and some nice steelies to boot.
  15. Ive fished for 30 yrs in the waters from Oak Orchard to Sodus. Ive only heard of one guy who has grabbed a Nice Lunge all these years. I'm pretty sure Captain Jerry of Rebel took a nice one while fishing out of Fairhaven in a Pro am. I do all my Musky fishing in the Upper Niagara, Erie near the Harbor mouth, and Chatauqua (SP) Lake. Now walleyes are a different story....................
  16. Pull on the Flack jackets, man the depth charges........" Heres to swimin with bow legged women chief."
  17. Lakers are like the Rodney Dangerfield of trout. No respect. Years ago we used to fish for them. We had some good times pulling 20-30 fish days. And we did have some hogs in the 20# class. It seems like the laker population has taken a dive. If you want to catch them, just go out to around 100ft(maybe a little deeper) and look for the long lazy hooks on the bottom. Drop down the bells all the way to the bottom. One the ball hits the bottom, crank up the ball so it barely bounces. And its that easy. Could turn a bad day into a good day....Fellas just make sure to revive the fish before sending them back. Burp the air bladder and the fish will swim right down. If not, the fish will stay on the surface and be lunch for the flying rats........Good luck Matt
  18. Man you hit a big nerve with that one. I absolutely hate guys who run their planer boards way out while fishing up by the piers. Almost makes we want to tape a fillet knife to my boat hook and go to work! What Ive found that works just as well are walleye boards, or yellow birds. My typical "combat trip" strats well before light with 4 downriggers and maybey 2 top lines (Not on boards/birds). Once it gets light enough to see, then I might bring in two of the riggers and put out two birds/boards on each side. I've found it to be easier to real the birds in closer to the boat when other boats get close. I also run the birds because it really gets the kings mad when the bird comes down and smacks them in the puss......LOL......Good luck
  19. Nice day on the lake. We started around 0530 hrs at our usual haunt. Tried in close and we ripped a couple of decent Browns with a bonus teenager King. We moved out slightly deeper and started in on the 3 and 4 yr olds. Fish were hitting just about everything. The one consistent rig that went was a new spin Dr I bought last night. I was chrome with a yellow & Chrome ladder back Spin Dr. with a Mirage Atomik fly. Looks similar to an NBK spoon. Anyway were were something like 12 for 15. Spoons were NBK, Laser spooks, and a sppon similar to a Habanero. We managed to kill two Giant Lampreys. The temperature was all over the place and the current really screwed with the lure speed. Thank god for the Fish Hawk. Good luck.............Matt French
  20. On our boat, I jump out on the swim platform and hold them by the tail and make sure they have water flowing through their gills. When I feel the fish start to kick, I shove him as deep as I can. Usually the little help I give him is enough to jump start his engine. Doing this in 3 fters is kinda interesting....LOL
  21. Depends on the season......In the spring I run 17 lb with a 14 # fluoro leader.... Now when the fleas are thick (like right now) I spool up with 30# Ande. Now I have heard about Cortland's Flea Flicker line, but I haven't personally tried it.......Good luck
  22. Been doing it for years....Ive personally Kept 2 kings for the wall in the past 10 years. The rest have gone back except derby fish. Spent many a day out on the swim platform reviving fish for the send back. To date the only fish Ive Kept that were not in the derby were a37# Fall male and a 40# summer hen king......Both made sweet mounts. Now if you talk walleye and perch.....Fill your limits and I'll start the fryers
  23. Big Johns are great. Check out the Vector rod holders.....Man they are sweet looking.
