Muskies & Fulton chain of Lakes

Back from the trip......No tigers, but we did manage a few Northerns. Biggest was 37 inches about 11 lbs. Nice northern. It was released to fight another day. Now its back to business....... Spoons and Spin Dr.'s -
Holy up welling! All the cold water came up to around 40-50ft. Made for nice fishing today BUT the kings that we marked seemed to have lock jaw. We ended the day 6 for 7. All real nice healthy mature kings. Good set up today was a lemon ice stinger 49down. Mags off the dipseys 110 to 130 on a 2 1/2 set. We were only out till about 0930 and we had to come in for prior obligations. Any of you guys notice lampreys on the fish you catch? Ive killed 4 in the last 2 trips. I hope the DEC gets on the ball with spraying the streams again. Anyway we'll be back at it on Saturday weather providing. Tight lines.........Matt

On the way up to Eagle Bay for a few days with the family. A friend of mine is already up there and called me in a panic today. He told me that all the landlocked Salmon are gone and that muskies have taken over the Lakes ( First, Second, Third and Fourth lakes). He told me that he was throwing a big top water muskie bait and had a huge blow up. No hook up, but that was enough to convince me to pack my St. Croix rods and my Musky Boxes..............So much for the family vacation. The fishing addiction strikes again!

AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME Wow we had a banner day. 18 for 24 an at the dock at 11:30. The fishing was good, but we had to really work at them. The temperature break was down around 90-95 ft. Early on we had the wires go with frog stingers. Both mags and regulars. As the day wore on with little wire action, we put out the big Dipseys set on a #2.The rigs were put out 255ft and it was on! The down riggers took fish 93 and 99 down using NBKs. The consistent producer was the straboard dipsey set at 255 out with an NBK. Overall we had 11 kings (6 majors, 3 teenagers , 2 skippers) 6 Browns up to 11 lbs, and one chicken (LT). All the fish were C&R. On another note I killed three lampreys today. One of the bigger kings had 2 on him.

Could be tough with this front we have coming through. Right before the fron, the fish moved out to 300-400 fow. Thats a long way to go! The main thing that I do is go out until I find the desired temp at an acceptable depth. I think having 50 deg down 60 to 70 is about perfect for summer kings. I just hate having my riggers down 90-100 ft. Anyway, as far as mag spoons.....28 sizes probably out fish the mags this time of the year. I just started running that muped rig and it paid off. Will give her another rty on Sat depending on the forecast....... -

Should have know what kind of day it was going to be when a D@#% black cat ran out in front of me on the way to the dock. Started out in our usual spot with the same cast of characters on the ends of our rods. Managed a few decent Browns, but no where near what we had earlier in the week. The Bait and the fish had vacated the area.. Ran out a little deeper and started to poke some teenage kings. 140 on the wire with a #3 setting. Spoons that were good were the new hollogram NK 28. Decided to run a mupped rig off the lowest rigger. Put out the 28 and Mag wonder bread. Smoked a couple of more teenagers on that one( the 28 went). All of a sudden the lower mup rig goes again, but this time the fish runs right to the surface and never stopped. Now Ive fished for 30 yrs on this lake and that Rainbow was the biggest Ive seen. In true fashion the steelie jumps and twists, and then the GD line breaks on the cheater.......What a monster......Well he's out there boys. With a Magnum wonder bread in his jaws. Ended the day 12 for 14...Not bad, but I'd give all those fish up just to have landed that one.........GOD I HATE BLACK CATS! -
4th of July Rochester

Ive been marking a ton of bait recently. Clouds and clouds of bottom to top bait. That probably has somthing to do with it to. The other day I managed a laker and when I burped it for the throw back, it puked up 2 monster gobies. I normally hate catching chickens, but if they are going to chow down on some gobies......They may have just stepped up a notch in my book. Right above a sheeper..... :lol Thanks Dan.... was a lucky grab. Tough to compete with the eastern end Brown fishery...... -

Steve we had three screamers on our dipsey rigs on Sat. All on Atomiks. We had a case of the drops. 3 rippers on the dipseys, and one on the rigger........Fish 4 , Missdemeanor zip. I hate that. We did manage a smaller teen king and a chicken on the copper. Possibly get after em on the 4th -
One of 2 Striped Marlin I landed that day. The other was still a little green, so we didn't dare bring her into the boat for a pic. AWESOME TRIP!

He is for sure a class act. A few years back Rochester had a pro am tournament. I don't think Joe was fishing in the tournament, but he was out with clients that day. One of the amature boats that was out, called out a distress call to the Coast Guard that their boat was sinking. Captain Toomey being the guy he was pulled his lines and told the charter that he had to go help these poor guys. Captain Toomey rescued those guys and brought them in. The boat sank in more that 300 ft of water. The following year at the Red Cross tournament, Captain Toomey was recognized and given an award for saving those Pro Am contestants. Just goes along with the above story about Captain Toomey's character and professionalism on the water...... -
divers? cheaters?
Missdemeanor replied to The Scottsman's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Bro, I would go with the blacks. I haven't had a lot of luck with the Rohemers(SP?) we use blacks on all our riggers. As far as lures, I would use spoons on those rigs. What happens is when the rod is released from the down rigger, the cheater will slide down the line to the lure. I think if the cheater was to slide down the line and run into a dodger or a spin dr you would have some problems. If you had a fish on that cheater and the cheater line came up to a dodger, SNAP! there goes that fish. Just my opinion. My family and I have fished the Lake for over 30 years and boy has it changed. Downriggers were the only way to go. Now its a new ball game with dipseys, slider divers, Lead core, and copper line and thumper rigs. Lots of changes due to the cleaner water. Hope these tips help out. -
divers? cheaters?
Missdemeanor replied to The Scottsman's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
A slider diver is actually a form of dipsey diver which allows you to let out as much line (leader) from the diver to the spoon. How it works is you thread the line through the slider dipsey and then tie a barrel swivel on to the end. I then run a piece of 12 ft flourocarbon to a swivel ( the lure end). What you do is let out as much line as you want ...the line slides through the dipsey and when you reach your desired leghth ( I like 100 ft) you snap the arm on the slider diver into place. Now is when you let the diver out next to the boat. I like the #4 setting and 35 ft from the boat worked well the other day. When you buy one of these rigs just follow the directions Slider cheaters are very simple to use. I take a piece of 10 -12 ft flouro and tie a regualr swivel on one end and a basic wire clip on the other. You let out a downrigger like normal....IE 50 ft off the ball and lets just say 60 ft down. Now that the rigger is out what you do is take that leader of flouro and clip the wire clip on the downrigger rod line. You thrown the spoon over and the line will slide down your down rigger line. A down rigger rod line Bows as the line travels to the downrigger release. The free slider will travel about 1/2 way down the line and there she will stay. When a fish hits the cheater and the rod releases, you need to be fast and real in the slack before you set the hook. Ive caught a lot of fish on the slider cheaters, but ive lost a ton as well. Hope this helps......Matt French -

I was out there in that pack of boats. The slider divers and slider cheaters were the ticket. Also the smaller sppons were workin......Honeybees and 4D's, and High tecs....... -
What a beautiful day out on the lake. Big thanks to Throbbin Rod for the info.It really paid off. 12 for 15 with a nice 13 lb Steelie. All the fish came in the 30 ft and up. 3 color cores, slider divers out 35 ft, freesliders on riggers 60 and 45 down. Real hodgepodge of lures were effective. Red honeybees, and small hi tecs were productive early. As the sun came up I switched over to the deeper stuff and the watermellon NK produced as usual. Nice relaxing day and we were at the dock by 10:30. Good luck boys and look for the breaks from 47 to 44 degrees.
