Fair Haven this weekend
TOP SECRET replied to joetroller's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
With this heat spell, the water is probably going to warm up fast. Try setting up early in the morning in 80fow pointed north. keep trolling North until you catch or mark suspended fish. If neither and you have a temp probe, keep trolling North until you can find 50 deg water someplace where your riggers can reach it (aka above 120ft). Best of luck! Nick -
Sounds like you need to make these two reels for copper and get smaller reels for the wire... repeat after me "but honey two more reels will really make me a better husband..." I've never used mono backing on wire, wouldnt the thin wire end up slipping under the mono on the spool and cause problems? [ Post made via Android ]

Question on the fishing pattern for this yr.
TOP SECRET replied to CaptSpike's topic in Open Lake Discussion
I agree and disagree with Vince. The fishing this year has been phenomenal. I don't think it's just that it's 3 weeks early, it's more like the fish have just "been here" all year. Looking back at my reports for the past few years we usually start hitting salmon mid july like clockwork out of Sodus. This year... we've hit salmon (and multiple each trip) since our first time out in June. And most that were fishing in May were also hitting them. As far as will the run be early... I don't think so. I think that's triggered more by decrease in daylight and lake cooling which should still be just like normal. Nick -
holy smokes where are you fishing? If you need more than 1000' of wire you need to take the boat off plane Just go with the 1000', I've come close to getting spooled if I don't slow the boat down, but it's very very rare and if I slow the boat down I never have a problem. Nick

If it's just for the weekend, duct tape, otherwise get the vinyl letters... that's what I put on the cooler that sits on our swim platform. I think it was like $40. Nick -

While it won't work underwater, an eye-fi card will store the video and upload it automatically to your laptop/smartphone every time you bring your rigger up. You won't even need to remove the card from the camera. I want one of these pretty bad, anyone want to buy it for me? 2012 Sodus Bay Healing Waters Salmon Slam - August 4th
TOP SECRET replied to TOP SECRET's topic in Open Lake Discussion
Ok we managed to top 10 boats for the event, way to go guys! We could probably use a few more volunteers for food prep and getting the barbecue ready for when everyone gets back. We are also going to run a SBHW Salmon Slam Tournament! All boats that volunteer will be automatically entered in the tournament. This will be a big fish event. I'd like to do biggest Salmon and biggest stellhead. I'm working on some small prizes for the winning vets as well as captains. Is anyone interested in running the tournament, to include weigh in and tracking weights? Nick -
It isn't easy and if it weren't for people contacting me to let me know how much they like it, I would have stopped a while ago. Lately, Theresa has been spending a lot of time below deck either working or reading... that's when the fire drills start... fight the fish, post, net the fish, take a pic, post. Sometimes my posts may not have a lot of info just due to not having time to post it immediately, but ask questions and as soon as the action lulls I try to get back to people. It also helps that the lake has been very calm most of the year... reading posts and trying to type on my tiny smartphone can get sickening in large waves Nick

If this is a gopro, the gopro App should be out sometime this summer which will let us watch live through our smartphone/tablets as well as stream "live". I have a gopro and wifi pac all ready to go so we can learn together I haven't gotten brave enough yet though to put mine down on my rigger It looks like the fish "miss" a lot with the spin doctor, I'd be interested to see if they "miss" as much with a flasher that spins much slower? Or maybe a longer leader on the fly to slow the spin down? Nick

I just ordered a kit from Tuna to fix my 800LC. Do you know what the trick is with the click pin? It's truly amazing to me that one of the most expensive reels on the market can have such a crummy drag, they should install the carbon fiber drags and charge an extra $10, $250 vs $260 is nothing if the drag actually works!
