Ok thanks guys. I had a problem once coming through the shoot in sodus, but that was my fault (I had left the registration in the car's glove department... it was our first trip of the year). Other than that the coast guard has treated us very well in sodus... just don't pull into their dock... they don't like that! Nick

All, I'm buying a new boat and I'm trying to figure out where to register it. I live in PA but use the boat mostly in NY. NYS DMV says that a boat registered in a different state can be used in NY for 90 consecutive days. Does anyone know how closely they monitor that? I ask because sales tax here in PA is 6.5%, in NY it's 8.5%. Also, it would be a heck of a lot easier dealing with registering the boat here than driving up to NY to do it. I'm buying the boat from Michigan which helps complicate the matter What do you guys who live out of state do? Nick

Hey Guys, Looking to upgrade boats, so I'm putting our 20' Trophy W/A (model 2002) with trailer up for sale. Here's a picture of the same model boat I found on google that shows the boat with the full canvas enclosure we have... The boat is in good shape and runs well. Has a lot of good fishing stuff: Two full size fish wells Livewell Hummingbird fishfinder that attaches to handheld GPS and shows GPS on it's screen (handheld GPS and link included) Two Canon digitroll downriggers and two canon manual downriggers 120hp Force Motor... tuned up end of last season and oil changed during winterization Trolling motor bracket installed V-berth sleeps two and has porta potti Dual batteries with battery switch Stereo with CD player VHF Full canvas enclosure with bimini top The aluminum escort trailer is single axle with brakes and is in good condition. The tires were replaced just over a year ago. Everything works well, except the cigarette lighter that I disabled to prevent smoking on board. We are the original owners as it was purchased new in 1996 and was used for only a week or two a year for the first ten years, then used on weekends for the past 3 seasons. The boat is winterized in Poughkeepsie, NY if you'd like to look at it, or I can provide pictures next weekend. We've priced the boat low in hopes of a quick sale... $7,500. Hey guys, yeah i've fished on the cieras before... someone in my marina actually has one. They're only 24' though, the 246 adds a 1.5' to the back, so there's actually a bit more fishing room on the new ones. Diversion... yeah the one we're looking at now has the 300hp in it. While it would be nice, the trophy we have now only has 120hp on it and can't get on plane with more than 3 people, so I'm used to be underpowered haha The only time it really really sucks is when you get caught in a storm! Hey Guys... Yeah Rich we got married last October, I figured 6 years we long enough to get to know her haha. I'll be out at Wilson a bit later this year, May 22-30... hopefully with a new boat I've never bought a NEW boat before, so I'm a bit nervous. I'm REALLY hoping it's not like car shopping... we've been going around trying to buy a new car for the MRS. and with the auto market being crap, and the bailouts... you'd think the car dealers would treat you better or at least be honest with you... it took all the control I had last week to not start swinging at a dealer after we drove 1.5 hrs to pick a car up that we worked a deal out with over the phone, only to be told after we sat there for an hour that they "made a mistake" and can't give us the car for that price, but $100 more a month Back to boats... I've seen the Discovery 246 in magazines before and always though, eh it's a cruiser, not enough fishing room, etc etc... but then we saw one at a boat show this past weekend and it's actually really nice. Fishing space is really only enough for 2-4 people, but I'm thinking that is probably all we really need. Hey Rich, you got a kicker with hydraulic tilt and electric start right? Does anyone have any thoughts on the Bayliner Discovery 246? My wife and I are looking for a new boat. It's just me and her 99% of the time, and we drive up from Philly and sleep on the boat, so it needs to have a bed big enough to lay fully in. We were looking for something with more fishing room than our current 19' trophy, but also with more cabin space. We want to stay under 26' and 8'6" beam so we can trailer occasionally. We really had a hard time finding anything that had fishing space AND living space. It seems to be one or other other. The 246 has the same amount of fishing space as our 19', but a lot more living space. I'm looking at a leftover 2007 for about $40k. So anything in or less than that price range is an option. Don't mind used, as long as 2004 or newer (i'm not a mechanic by any means). Anyone have any thoughts? Nick

Dude, if I wanted to catch brown trout, I'd fish more pro-ams Being serious though, I think there are a lot of us that don't really like targeting "different species". I for one could care less if I ever catch anything other than a king. Don't get me wrong, I'll put a spoon out for steelhead or browns while looking for kings to supplement the action, but I really hate trying for just steelies, or just browns, or just lakers Nick

I think it should be like redfish tournaments... three salmon between 20 - 25 lbs only allowed Otherwise, I'd say three biggest fish if pros/ams are in the same division. If seperate divisions, I'd say biggest 6 for pros biggest 4 for ams. Pros can only keep 6 fish, ams can only keep 4. Live release only. Nick

Sorry it took me so long to get back to you guys, been on business travel. Sounds like those rips on the wires with no one home could have been smaller fish, maybe cohos or steelies. I know when I get into a pocket of steelies or cohos I get a lot of short wire hits. Now the one that bit off your hook... that was probably a big male and he was pissssssed Looking forward to this weekend... really hoping we get some nice weather. I need a bigger boat... end report. Seriously though. The water this weekend was just too rough for my 19' trophy. We toughed it out friday from 6:30pm to 8:30pm. We managed a nice 24lb king. Came on the 65' rigger on a glow perch stinger. First fish on the spoon and the thing came in bent in half... I quickly remembered why I hate stinger spoons. NKs can catch 50kings and be fine, but not stingers. Saturday we got out and it just was NOT pleasant out there. Only fish an hour and went 1 for 2 with a shaker. Sunday same story, fished for an hour and managed a nice domestic bow, 10lb 2oz. 15th place on the LOC and dropping like a rock! The bow came 120fow dipsey out 330' #2 setting with a green protroll pickled sunshine strong fly. If you guys aren't using strong flies... try one. They've been kinda my secret weapon for the past few years, they're smaller and have their days for sure! PROOF Nick[/img]

Stix, Good to see some reports from you! We tried for some browns briefly this weekend without much luck.. I'm just not cut out for brown fishing. Steelies we've gotten pretty good at... with the lack of kings around Sodus, we may start to target some big ol steelies. My 10lb 2oz won't last long on the board and I have to make up for the 20lb steelie I caught two days after the end of the fall derby two years ago! Nick

Sorry Chin didn't mean to ruffle your feathers, just my opinion. Taxes would have to be split evenly as well. When you take people out normally, do you charge them for tackle and boat usage? If not, why would it be any different because they caught a big fish and won some money? To each their own, and if I ever have the priveldge to fish on your boat I would surely follow your rules if that was what you told me, but I just don't see things the same way. If I start charging my good friends who I have the priveledge to fish with because they were lucky enough to catch a big fish. then I might as well sign up for my captain's license and become a charter. Again this is all just my personal opinion and everyone is entitled to do what they want on their own boat. Nick

It's funny to hear how everyone treats things different... make sure you work it out before fishing together no matter what! On my boat... anyone can grab the rod, reel down to the fish, but then they need to hand it off to whoever's turn it is. Then that person has to fight the fish to the very end, no hand offs. Any winnings get split by all of those on the boat EQUALLY. I don't agree with the boat getting a share part... . The way I figure it, most people I fish with have their own boat. We could have just as likely been fishing with their boat that weekend... they have slip, fuel, and tackle costs just like I do. If they don't have a boat, well the story still sticks. I'm just giving you guys a hard time, but seriously... don't take away from the experience... decide before hand to split everything equally and it will make the prize that more gratifying for everyone! Fuel, tackle, dockage, those are all costs most of us sign up for at the beginning of the year. Now charters, I can understand if they do things differently, they're a business after all. But when Recs start taking shares for their boats... I just feel like it takes a piece of fun out of it. Nick

So what makes the fat ones with the pink stripe so different than the "normal" steelhead? They seem to cycle out of Sodus and only really show up around September, whereas the "normal" steelies are around all year. Come september though, the domestics tend to mix in with the cohos a lot. I'm guessing they must be a strain different than the skamania or normal steelies..... Nick

You might want to look into some of the NY reservoirs or places in the adirondacks... fair haven is nice, but it's not exactly going to be "alone in the woods". Some of the reservoirs and lakes in the adirondacks you may never see another human being your entire trip... if that's what you're looking for Nick

If you don't get up here much, spend the extra money on the wire... it's not too much. Last thing you want to do is clean fleas for your 6 days or wish you had bought the wire, etc. With the amount you'll spend on gas, boat, time, etc the $60 for wire will be insignificant. Don't bother with the copper. It's not any fun to reel in and unless you have a planer board it will get in the way. Besides, just ask fishtails... he'll tell you... copper doesn't catch fish Oh and make sure you buy a lot of green flies, lures and flashers. People who catch fish on red and blue just don't own enough green hehe. What port are you going out of, people may have more particular info for you based on that. Nick

Pierless, A bunch of us are usually on ch9 as well. I won't be up this weekend, but should be up most weekends the rest of the year. We find by teaming up (one person goes deep, the other shallow) we tend to find and catch more fish and help eachother out! Nick
