I'd appreciate some opinions on what trailer setup you guys would prefer given the choice? On a heavy 24 ft fiberglass boat, would you prefer a bunk trailer or a roller trailer?

That was just too funny Skipper

Name: Rod Keyser Boat: Lucky Enuff Origin: Derived from the Scott Kirby song Lucky Enough. If you don't know the song (played occasionally on Margaritaville) the chorus goes "if your lucky enough to live on blue water, than your lucky enough by me". We were lucky enough to spend 8 great years on the St. Lawrence river. We felt very blessed and the family thought it was a fitting name. Sold the camp last fall and now we travel, but we're still lucky enuff to spend much of our free time on the water....specifically Lake O !! Make: 240 Sea Ray fly bridge sedan Port: Fort Niagara - Wilson in May...then follow the Pro Ams Years on LO: 9 yrs

Beautiful boat Matt. Best of luck this season with it See you at the tournaments.

Do salmon run out of LO into the St. Lawrence?
Fishtails replied to PaulADK 100's topic in Open Lake Discussion
I had a cottage on The St. Lawrence for 8 years and never heard that one. Wish I would have, I'd like to have checked it out. I was told by a neighbor that several years before I lived there a lake trout showed up in our cove and was swimming around the docks....that doesn't make sense either cause our cove was 4ft deep and very warm, especially by lake trout standards. We were also 40 miles down stream from the lake.....go figure????? The more I learn, the less I seem to know -

Do salmon run out of LO into the St. Lawrence?
Fishtails replied to PaulADK 100's topic in Open Lake Discussion
Chinook do not run the St. Lawrence. Partly because they are not stocked in any of the tribs. Pheromones in the water guide salmon, allowing them to find their birth streams. As far as younger kings entering the St Lawrence In the summer months, I'd guess water temp. plays a big role in that not happening. The river has no thermocline, so during the summer months the water temp would be to warm for a Chinook. I'm no biologist....so that's just my guess but I certainly have spent many days fishing on the St Lawrence river. -
Running stackers/cheaters on coated cable
Fishtails replied to tangledline's topic in Tackle and Techniques
Just don't use the Scotty clip on releases on your probe rigger....the metal clip can interfere with your speed and temp readings if you clip it on the coated cable. -

I'm Keeping the boat at Wilson Boatyard and staying at Four Mile Creek campground. So who alls going...where ya gonna be and when? Chowder, Don't overlook the Blue Sea AFD battery switch. Might be the best switch on the market for your app. I do as rusty says, and leave It on two all the time. http://bluesea.com/viewresource/91

Way to go guys!! All's well that ends well!! -
I enjoy making my own fly harnesses. I know I'd really enjoy making the flys to, but I'm resisting that temptation. I think I have enough hobbies. I tie up 50 rigs over winter, and that lasts me the season. I am adding some glow gel beads to the treble on a couple this year to see how they work. I may add a bead of glue yet to the center. Hopefully they wont scare the fish away

Nice pics Ray! Hey, the pic with the Landshark lager, is that at Porky's Barbecue ? I missed going there this year, but It's one of my favorite places to grab a bite....great atmosphere & deep fried Key lime pie....yummmm

Yes...I remember speaking with you. I'll pm you my cell, call me when we're out there. I'm there from the 1st till the 10th of May. Yes, I'm keeping the boat at the Boatyard Marina again.

May 1st for me Can't wait!!

Steve.....that stinks dude! Didn't you 1099 your fishing partner? That would have alleviated you of the obligation of paying taxes on his half . Then, after deducting your derby expenses "for the entire season" you could have mitigated that somewhat, or paid no taxes on your winnings at all. Before handing over a check...you really should get that person's social. Then you 1099 them on the amount they won and you won't get the shaft. Winning should be fun! Once you get paid, It's no longer a "hobby" and you have to treat it more as a business venture. That being said, I have no idea what I'm talking about so definitely consult your tax adviser

I got a little more info on this today. It seems my accountant's brother fishes the pro bass circuit, so he was pretty familiar with this subject. As far as paying taxes on tournament winnings, It's a cumulative amount through the year. Basically you keep ALL your receipts of tournament/derby expenditures throughout the tournament season and deduct that amount from all your monetary winnings. If you're In the red at the end of the season it's a wash and you pay no taxes on your winnings. If you show a profit, then that amount is subject to tax.
-
Yea...what rail bird said I'm just passing along what I was told. I don't pretend to know....that's why I use an accountant. Been using the same guy a long time and I trust him. Just something you may want to look Into. I don't know, but I'd guess you could? I've never taken a client with me so I have not given It any thought?
-
I know this subject has come up before and as I recall the general feeling was your tournament winnings (over $600) get taxed at 30 some percent. We had our yearly appointment with our accountant today and the subject came up. What an eye opening experience going to the accountant can be. I found out I spent $9500 last year on fishing....and that didn't Include boat upgrades, maintenance and repair (another $7500) And I'm sure plenty of you guys spend way more than I do....Wow, is this is an expensive hobby!!! Even worse was that my wife found all this out at the same time There's a little explaining going on In the Keyser household tonight... Anyway...My accountant, who Is pretty by the book, said the couple thousand we won last season was a wash because we can write off the expenses of fishing the tournaments. So unless you win more than you can show you paid out (a level I doubt I'll ever achieve), your winnings are offset by expenses. After he saw what I spent as opposed to what I won he just chuckled and said It was a wash . Just thought some of ya may want to know that. Of course, don't take my word for It....I'd suggest you ask your accountant.

Yup....they took the plunge Rich! Last October, I believe? I don't think I've heard from Nick since then?? Hey Rich...my cell amd email have changed, I'll pm It to you. Hope to see both you and Nick out west this spring. I'll be at Wilson May 1-10, and leaving the boat there till the Pro Am. Looking like I'll be by myself a few days mid week, so I may need to find some fishing partners for a couple days. Let me know If you'll be out there I'm stoked for you Nick....good luck and have fun on that new boat search!
