  1. What type did you get Stan? Here are the one's we run. I'll be buying a few myself. http://www.9erslures.com/ I'd start slow. We trolled them around 2.5 to 2.8 gps speed when we were hitting fish. With tide and current, that was as slow as I could go. I wouldn't be afraid to start even slower If you can....then bump up the speed till you find the magic number. They will definitly hang up on the bottom, so be careful. There Is good info on the tech. page of the above website. If the guys out there think planer boards and dipsies are odd.....wait till ya pull that sucker out of the box Let us know how they do out there for you.
  2. You got that right dude!! I see the same thing fishing the Jersey shore, and It's only 5 hrs from lake O, and visa versa. I think It's hilarious myself I'm glad to hear our east coast methods are putting fish in the box for you! Keep it up and enjoy every day your blessed to be on the water!
  3. I'd agree with Gill T that netting would be a challenge with a bigger king If the fish Is not tired out. Far as I'm concerned, It's like anything else that Is a little unorthodox. Most guys will think It's whack and to much trouble by It's sheer presence. Hey...stripers ain't no walk in the park to pull In, but my 9yr old brought one In on the Umbrella so It can't be that bad Like Gill T said, some of the fight Is lost, so a brown may be very lame on the end. Same goes for a laker. I think a king would be up to the challenge I have thought to run it off the ball without hooks to pull fish Into the spread and then stack a rigger rod above it. You could put a whole school of bait under the boat doing that Btw....No dipsey. Just clean off the wire! They'd be fine off the copper or leadcore also.
  4. Stan, I tried an umbrella rig one time last spring In lake O, but It was mid day and the bite was off. I couldn't really judge their effectiveness on kings or browns. I'm making a promise to myself to devote a rod to one for the whole day or two next spring....when I know the bite Is on. I see absolutely no reason why they would not be as effective on Salmon as they are on Striped bass. Umbrella rigs look unbelievable in the water!! There is a fair amount of resistance upon retrieval, but not much more than a diver that Is tripped. As far as using them, there would be to much drag for a church board. I'd compare them to a dipsey diver with a bit less drag and resistance. For striper's, the common way to deploy them Is clean off your wire rod. I hope to get in a half day trolling the ocean tomorrow. I'll try to take a few more pictures of them in action for you.
  5. Cocgrats Landshark on the awesome weekend of fishing! Great story and pictures!
  6. Great story and Pictures!! Congrats on the win, thats an awesome weekend of fishing!
  7. Thanks for that tip Gray Fox.
  8. Nice pictures Rick! Bob, I catch them all through the water column! If they're on the feed, I'll find em I got 4 so far this fall.....the rest of the crew....a big fat zero!! I guess you can call me somewhat of an expert when It comes to catching snails Ray's got nothing on me!!
  9. Got out fishing Yesterday In Sandy Hook with Diesel and my son. Great day on the Ocean and we got my son his first striper while trolling umbrella rigs. Still searching for "the big one" though. One or two shots yet this season before pulling the boat for the winter. My boy and his fish... Me and Justin with his shark A couple with Diesel and the umbrella rigs.....What do ya think about that Ray
  10. I use the heartlands also and I like them. I have some ugly sticks to try for next year as well, but havn't fished them yet. I was also very impressed with the Okuma blue diamond downrigger rods last year. If I were starting all over, that's the rod I think I'd get.
  11. I used to have a corian cutting board I liked a lot.....Then Ray K fished with me. Now I no longer have one Next time I think I'll get one that floats.
  12. Congrats on the new truck Stan....best of luck with it!! Sorry again about the death In the family. Not sure with the weather It would not have been worth the 5hr drive anyway, though I'm sure we would have fished through the night on Friday If we had another person. Ray already finished his case of beer by the time the sun went down and Rick and I were tired from the 9hr fishing day so I made the decision not to fish after dark. I just don't think I had the alertness required to keep my crew out of harms way. Friday was great though. You certainly were missed! Boy, would have been great to have some more help keeping Ray In line I'm heading back out with my boy on Saturday, and the boat will be there for at least the next couple weeks hoping for a couple shots at "the big one"!
  13. Truly sorry to hear about your loss Bob.
  14. I won't disagree, your rods took fish Ray. Then again, It didn't hurt that you always set up on the side with the good drift. In fact, I'm pretty sure that's why you drove the boat so much....so you could get her pointed in your favor... I think If we would have had one or two more days, we would have started really pounding them. We're having some of our catch for dinner tonight....then watching the Phillies bring home the World Series
  15. I know I'm watching the weather Rick. Justin Is pumped to get out a time or two yet this season.....and so am I! That trip just left me wanting more
  16. Rick & Ray, When you guys left I ended up hanging out at the dock with the locals all day Saturday. I didn't leave the Marina till after 6pm  After cleaning the boat, somehow we Bs'd the whole day away, along with a few Heineken's. Thanks again for the directions Rick!!!!! Btw, The locals said the fishing has been really tuff this year, not so different than what we experienced on lake O. According to them, we did excellent coming in blind. They didn't believe me when I said we caught 20-25 bass over the two days. Reflecting back, It worked out pretty well I think!! Friday was a gorgeous day on the ocean! Guys...I found a little trick you may want to use to quiet Ray down a little. Put dry ice in the beer cooler, his lips freeze to the beer can
  17. Geez....who was the idiot that started this thread....he he  Your right though Brian, I think we all knew this would never stay on track. Update from the committee: About all I can say Is thanks to all who have contributed in a positive manner on this thread. I hope some of the quality ideas and opinions are beneficial and considered when adopting the new rules for the 2009 Pro Ams. There are some very strong opinions on some very important issues that we were collectively able to put in front of the committee. I look forward to seeing how this all plays out. Reguardless.....Our team Is looking forward to fishing the Pro Ams In 2009!! To the committee, I apologize for the couple who just cant seem to control their actions. You shouldn't have to waste your time reading the nonsense a couple members have posted. They know who they are and their words speak for themselves. There's always one or two In every crowd, so what are ya gonna do?
  18. Fridays box of 3 keeper Stripers and Porgy Me with a Porgy Me and Ray with our catch Ray and Rick with some bass
  19. Our trip could have been worse.....We could have been fishing with this guy  Ray giving some love to his striper. Ray loves his fish RayK and Dieselhp on a double Little shark
  20. Well...anyone who knows Ray knows not to take anything he says to seriously. Outdrives worked perfectly....but did need to adjust a new shift cable we just installed when I put It In the water cause I don't have a lake In my back yard. That first docking attempt was pretty funny!! The freakin wind was howling making it tuff for an amature like me All the rest of the landings were pretty close to perfect though, If I do say so myself I want to thank both Rick and Ray for some good times and plenty of laughs!! We'll get out again soon Rick and do some trolling !! The forecast was looking pretty bad for the tourney, so we made a group decision to fish dawn to dust on Friday, instead of fishing the tourney on Friday night. It was already starting to kick up when we called It a day on Friday evening, so I think we made the right choice. We went to the captains meeting Friday night and decided to go out for as long as the weather would allow on Sat. morning but Ray got a call from home @ 3am that there was a sewer problem at home and he needed to leave In the morning so we decided to bag It....the wind was blowin good anyway and I doubt we would have gone out regardless. Anyways, we had a decent trip. Just couldn't land a huge one. Caught a good amount of stripers In an area we call the rip. Probably 20-25...nobody was counting. 3 keepers and a bunch 1/2 inch too short!! Decided to take a run 10 more miles down the coast to the Shewsbury Rocks during slack tide and bottom fished for a couple hours Friday afternoon. We moved around a couple times till we found our hot spot and had non-stop Porgy action with a couple sea bass, sharks, think Ray caught a Ray,etc. I think I may have caught a couple snails too....can't really remember?? According to the locals who saw our fish, they said we kicked ass on the Porgies! The weather was against us, but I think we did a good job making the best of It. I left the boat In the slip and hope to get back a couple more times yet this year. I'll post a bunch of pics In the picture section.
  21. Thanks guys....sounds like the conditions are gonna be pretty sporty. Esp. tomorrow and then again Sat. night into Sunday. Should be fun though...reports to follow!
  22. I remember watching a story about them on the discovery channel within the last year. I recall my first thought after watching it was that it was only a matter of time before they get into the great lakes, and It's scary as heck thinking about It. It's a form of pollution In a sense, and could be catastrophic! I don't even like thinking about it! This old article sums It up pretty well. http://www.epa.gov/glnpo/invasive/asiancarp/index.html
  23. There are a lot of great opinions on this thread, especially pertaining to the rules. Any more Ideas on how to get more teams involved without ruining the integrity of the current Am. division? For what it's worth: I am for keeping the observer. If you want a "no observer" division, add a third entry level division as earlier proposed. I am for NO communication also. I admit that I spend my time talking on the cell, but I'd prefer to have the no communication rule brought back. I am for culling In Niagara only. Especially with the impending short supply of one year old kings we will be seeing next year.
  24. You may indeed be correct My Turn, but then again I don't know If you are privy to the "newly proposed Am rule changes" that the committee has been kicking around for next year, so If not, you may be lacking the information needed to make a logical fact based assessment. My plan Is/was not intended to change the current structure or make It more complicated. It Is/was simply intended to SAVE the current Am division many of us love to fish, and allowing for a NEW division to impose the newly "committee suggested" rules/ or lack thereof. I think some of the proposed changes would absolutely destroy the Am division. Not good timing with the Scotties coming to town!! If this thread helps do nothing but keep the rules as they were last year.....that would be great!!!! I never said it was the answer My Turn....just an Idea. Maybe you are aware of the Proposed changes? If so, I don't see how you can say It's a terrible Idea? If I could come forth and post the proposed changes, it would be clear and make more sense to everybody, but I am not at liberty to do so and I am a man of my word so you'll all just have to read between the lines I certainly have no ties with the Pro Am committee, and I don't speak for them. I just happened to be involved with some discussions with two of the four committee members and both pitched their ideas to me to get an "inner perspective" from someone who fishes the division. I mentioned I'd bring It up on Lou, but without going into detail. Why not leave out the sarcasm and take this opportunity to be productive and help them keep the Pro Ams the most prestigious Tournaments on the south shore of lake Ontario!! Hey...at least I'm courageous enough to toss out an idea and sign my name on it for folks like yourself to call terrible. We are all still awaiting your suggestions to address next years issues My Turn, and to sign your posts with your name so I know who I'm speaking to
  25. What abour Radar scanners....same deal? Do you take them In for the winter?
