Fair Haven 9/6-7/08
Fishtails replied to Popeye's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Nice report....glad to hear the fishing is getting better for you guys in Fairhaven! I'd have to agree about the month to go speculation. We caught some very silver fish in Mexico on Saturday and the eggs were still very tight. Those silver kings have awhile to go yet before they are ready. For those of us who speculated it would be an early fast run....we were a bit off target. Also...just got turned on to those Savants and I'm loving those spoons!! It goes to show that the sponsors of our tournaments need to give out more product! I got those Savants @ the Fairhaven Challenge and not only do they catch fish....all I can say about the paint is WOW.....none better IMO! I'll be spending a good chunk of change with Savant this winter -
Your gonna love it (except for the gas)! I don't use my bridge, but that's just cause I'm a moran....my kids love it! I'm still learning how to drive a twin screw, so I like to be close to the dock Enjoy rigging it and best of luck !

Nice....congrats on the new purchase. Looks an awful lot like mine, but bigger. Mine is a 24. Looks like it has a bridge...is that right? Best of luck with it!!

Moto, I'm Not sure I'm in a position to answer as to myself being out of my mind....suppose it's possible, but I'm a little bias. Thanks for the suggestion though, I appreciate it and I'll have that looked into. In hind sight, I should have put my question under it's own topic. I see how you could have taken it personal, but that was not my intent. Other than that, I think I was pretty clear with my thought & question.

Dave, I understand the rules & why they are in place. It is what it is and we know them going in. My question is; When there is a dq at the ceremony, do you move everyone up in the money awards, or just the overall standings? I'm curious because it would seem to me a lower fish that was not present at the ceremony would no more qualify than a higher fish that was not at the ceremony....same thing really except one was "required" and one was not. how does that work? Seems like a dq is a dq. Maybe take the $$ from that position and put it towards the next derby (like the lottery). Maybe that's a way to build the prize structure over the lower places? Grand prize is nice, but beyond second place could use some real improvement! Maybe that's a way to build the pot. Just a thought for upcoming years, and probably a stupid one at that. Thought I'd make mention anyway Regardless, thanks and keep up the good work! We appreciate all your hard work.

Looks like the rigger ball to me? Were you running a rigger @ 35 ft or so? Usually I pick up my rigger balls 5-10 ft from where my counter is at, due to blow back, etc. With certain conditions, sometimes you'll only pick them up trolling certain directions. Your gps speed is only 2.2, seems a little slow and that would account for you picking up the ball. Here is a pic of my ff Rick, the green lines are the rigger balls, sometimes I hardly pick them up at all....lots of conditions will play a factor in picking them up. The red ball is bait -

That's a good point Bob, several fish we caught were still silver. Glad to hear you had a good day out there. As always, good talking with ya out on the water. -
Pretty tuff fishing for us last weekend....especially Sunday!! I didn't get out Monday, but I heard that was the day fishing got better  . Took an old friend out who has been having it tough at home & work, and needed a break. For three days of fishing, we only boated 8 fish & lost about the same. I kept him busy driving the boat and landing all the fish and hopefully it helped? Following are some pictorial examples supplied by Claude of how not to hold a fish for a picture We fished mostly from the Little Salmon to the plant, staying mostly to the north west. Most of our bites were from 70 fow to 100. We did venture deeper on Sunday afternoon and took two bites (loosing both), one over 160 and one over 200. Most everything seemed to come about 60 down. Nothing was hot for us, except for a Savant glow spoon that I don't know the name of. It was white with green and yellow dots. Most fish came on spoons, including nbk, Kevorkian, the savant and a Yeck spoon I also don't have a name for. Mostly rigger bites, with only a few on the wire & copper. Bloody death spinny and a purple mirage took a few fish on the wire, as did the white/blue spinny and a hammer fly off the 300-400 copper. I heard Mt. dew was hot, but I couldn't get it to go even once....using the wrong fly I guess? Couldn't get hardly anything that was green working either, maybe it was the 500 green echips already deployed by the 100's of boats fishing around me? Sunday was really tuff, going 1 for 4 on an all day trip. It was our biggest King though, just over 28 lbs but a couple ounces shy for the daily loc $$. Kinda glad it was a lil shy, cause I forgot to check before filleting it. Here is Claude with a couple of his fish

I had one of those drive past me while musky trolling on the St Lawrence a few years back. They look like they'd take a wave over the side pretty easy....and they are kinda slow, but pretty darn cool!! Hey....just mount some dipsey holders on the side and your set! No dock fee or nothin....just drive from home right into the lake, then back home after a day of fishing  !! -
I had a boat cut behind us just as we hooked up with a fish on our port dipsey rod. Just like that the starboard dipsey started smokin wire out. I thought we had a double, but then I lost mine. I started to suspect something was up with my friend's....It just wasn't acting right. Turned out our second fish was a chrome dipsey, green e chip and a green fly, attched to our dipsey and flasher/fly Finally....I got some tackle back from the lake!! Just another reason to use wire.....the guy that cut behind me was only using mono, so we won

I spoke with this girl at the cleaning station at Jellystone yesterday. We were cleaning a 28lb king...she came over and said "nice fish....but mine was bigger" She was obviously very proud and showed me a pic of it on her cell phone. It was her first trip salmon fishing. She figured they wouldn't need a loc ticket for just a 4 hour trip. Her husband took the first fish. If I recall correctly she wanted to watch how it was done. Next/last fish was the brute. Took her 35 min. to land the fish. I told her to quit Salmon fishing...she'll have a tough time topping this trip. -
My 9yr old Justin and myself joined Jeff J and his 13 yr old son Matt for a couple days of fishing out of Point Breeze aboard Jeff's boat The Hard Way. It was a trip for the boys....and they landed every fish of the trip! Matt with his 25 lb king he landed solo Matt netting Justin's king Justin netting Matt's A happy kid!

2008 Fair Haven Challenge Final Results
Fishtails replied to A-TOM-MIK's topic in Open Lake Discussion
Fantastic job getting involved as always Tom! Everyone involved with the FHC should be proud of a job well done! I know we had fun Tough fishing has been the theme for most every event this year, and this one was no exception. Boy....who would have expected it after the Niagara Pro Am? Looking forward to a full tournament schedule next year -
Same here Jeff.....Justin And I had a great time. Matt is a good kid and I really appreciate how kind he was to Justin, seeing they are 4 years apart. I'd like the pictures of Justin on the rod and Matt tag teaming on the net.... A real youth effort landing that fish! All we "grown ups" had to do was watch I thought all went really well and Matt definitely impressed me! I look forward to next year I left the PB report for you Rick....they had lot's of fun. Obviously, I would have liked a few more. The big one we lost was my fault for not beefing up the copper leaders. I was still running 25 from the summer  That fish would have really helped. That's fishing, eh? I look for this next week to be real smash mouth with lot's of FISH ON !! I'll call ya on Thursday.

I want to thank those who ran the FHC....nice event with 72 teams this year and well run !! Great job guys! Payout was top 5, which we did not make, but they gave out prizes to top 15, and that was great cause our team had two children and it gave them a chance to go up and experience the whole tournament routine and I think they really enjoyed it. Congrats to Royal Flush, Liquid Plummer, Screamer, Beginners luck for making the money! We had one of our poorer showings as of late with a 14Th place finish, but we had a great time and that's fishing! Report: We headed out of the Lil Salmon at dawn and set up in 90 fow. We had no prefishing and I hadn't fished the bay this year at all so we were running kinda blind. We had great bait and it took about an hour till our dipsey fired (320 out...white spinny & white glow strong fly). Within a minute of that the 500 copper took off. Cool....a double to start the morning and things are looking good. Unfortunately, the copper fish was BIG, and after a blistering run of 300 or so ft of backer it tore off the leader . We landed the 16+ king on the wire and got back to fishing. Within a short time, 450 copper takes off. Re-rigged with the same set up (white/blue spinny & Atomic Hammer fly) and 13 yr old Matt landed a 16+ lb king. The screen went blank for us and we trolled the rest of the morning without another release. Temp was deep....about 80 down. It was a trip for the kids and here are some pics of them @ the FHC.

Good seeing you again Ray. Forgot to tell you thanks & that those peaches you gave to the kids were really good. Couldn't help but worry a little what you may have done to them before offering them up, but they were good enough that we decided to take our chances -
Sometimes things read differently than they are intended....happens to me plenty  Thanks for the pm bud. True that we don't have to agree, as long as we respect each individuals boat & tournament policies and stay respectful towards them I'll stay in touch.

Tim.....it's nice when cookie cutters are 18-20 lbs What port are you fishing the FHC out of? We are fishing it also, not sure what port yet however? -
I have agree 100% with you Duane on the boat share. I also agree with Nick as to each his own. However, saying a boat share is selfish is a pretty much way out of line IMO. Taxes alone on tournament winnings are 25% federal, plus state and local. It's pretty cut and dry with me, during any tournament the boat gets a share of the winnings to cover taxes, repairs, lost tackle, and so on. Whoever's boat is used is irreverent as long as that individual is the one receiving the check....boat takes a share. If someone else is to receive the check, tax consideration would supersede boat share. It would be more selfish in my opinion to not be OK with that. Anyone not OK with a boat share is not welcome to fish on my boat....simple as that.

Thanks Duane....very fair system you have in place...I like it! I only brought up the netting issue cause I'm a net hog  . I am....I admit it. I hate to see a big fish swim away in a tournament or derby cause of a botched netting attempt and I've seen it happen too many times.....I guess we all have. I know a good friend and fishing buddy of mine thinks I don't trust him on the net, cause I always net the bigger fish during the Pro Ams, but it's not that I don't trust others as much as I do trust myself. That being said, I'll be fishing the loc with a buddy who hasn't Salmon fished in years.....I'd be freaking nervous wreck with a 35lber on the line and him on the net stabbing at it like it was a bass, getting the hook caught in the netting while it hangs on the hoop half in and half out, just before it rolls back and floats off belly up....but alas it gets revived and takes off just seconds before you reach it after your sharp turn that tangles every line you have in the water. During the sharp turn the thumper drops to the bottom and gets snagged. It's now burning out wire and to make things even worse it's also wrapped around the probe rigger cable. Then snap....everything goes silent and I have this look on my face... $400 dollars of lost equipment later I'm kicking myself for not netting the fish :x I didn't make that up....I had that exact chain of events happen to me last year. Now I'm a net hog BTW... have you taken notice how everyone likes to share on the winnings, but nobody wants to share on the losings. Anyways....Best of luck to you as well Duane. This time I'm checking tickets and making sure everyone on the boat is entered so we don't have a replay of the summer loc on Lucky Enuff. Enjoy and be safe! Good luck to all & see ya on the leader board.
