Fishtails replied to Billy V's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Bill, Why not many are sharing at the moment....I don't know? Seems every board is like that...most just take and never contribute very much. Hopefully, they'll come around, but probably not. There are a lot of people such as yourself who contribute ALL THE TIME....And I personally thank you and the others like you. My learning curve has been a fraction of what it would have been without you guys. I'm trying to give when I can, but only being in my third year on lake O, that's not much. Keep up the great reports....all the views go to show how many of us look forward to them. Rod -

I know what your saying about the lakers Rich. You did the right thing though by getting them on fish. Too bad the Salmon wouldn't work with you. We're you marking kings...or did they vanish? I've been hearing they were in there off the wall pretty thick...no? I will be up from the 12th to the 26th and I plan on fishing Henderson at least a couple days.....more if it warrents it. Otherwise I'll head down to Oswego. I'll give you a call and maybe you can give me some pointers?? I can use all the help I can get Rod -

Thanks for the report Chris. Glad to hear your boat is back where it belongs. Did I read your report right....brown over 375 fow? Doesn't sound like much has changed in Oswego over the last week. -
just got back from the islands
Fishtails replied to bucketmouthbass36's topic in Open Lake Discussion
Sounds like you had a great time! That's a pretty big pike for the Islands. Usually a fish that size is a musky. Be proud of that one! A 43" pike is a wall hanger for The St Lawrence. -
That's cool Rich....nice and simple, just my style! I can do simple Rod

Hi Paul! Yeah, I would have liked to catch up with you at the challenge. It's been awhile. Since I was staying on the boat in Oswego, we decided to only do the run to the weigh in if we had a chance to be in the money. It didn't go that way for us on that particular day so we saved ourselves alot of hassle and stayed put at harborfest and enjoyed the events. I have not fished down by 9 mile & mexico bay much yet, but that will change in the next month. Hope to see you again soon. I'd like to catch up with you one of these days. You guys fishing the FHC in a few weeks? This pic says it all. The boy fished the challence with me all day, then this in the evening....what a great day! Rod

Thanks Rich & Dan, My son LOVES to fish, and he's caught more species of fish than most people I've met, but it's usually with some sort of help from me. This one was solo and I knew he'd kick himself if he gave up on the last moment of such a battle. He's really getting good and he's not to far from helping me set up. He just needs to grow a little yet, but he's got it upstairs. I took him fishing down in Key West this past winter. For fun I picked up a book of all the local reef fish, I thumbed through it and with my eyes closed I picked out two fish. I told him if he catches the first it would be worth $50 and the second would be good for $25. They ended up being a Rock Hind and Sand Pearch and he took that book with him everytime he fished trying to match up his fish. Wouldn't you know....he caught both!! Next time I'm adding a size limit cause that $25 pearch was only about 3". Rod

Fishtails replied to muskybob's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Well, any day on the water is a good one, eh? Skunks stink but then again stink happens sometimes, esp. when it's hot. It was a little slow a couple days ago but I thought it would have picked up. Is the good temp still around 60-70 down out deeper? The last day I was out (wed) the riggers were dead for us. Chief....the fish are there, and will be there when you arrive. You live within a half hour of me, so pm me and though I don't know all that much, I'll do everything I can to help you get your son hooked up on some Kings....If he's anything like my son, he'll be begging for mercy after the first couple screaming runs. Either way, have a great time out there with him!! Rod -
Do many of you guys fish this challenge? It looks like we're in with at least part of our team. I may as well be the first one to ask....what time is the captain's meeting going to be :?: lol Looking forward to actually making this meeting and seeing some of you I've yet to meet. Till then....Go out and take a kid fishing. Rod

my first time out of sandy
Fishtails replied to dremarquis's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
This has been a great thread!! I got a good laugh and I really needed that cause I'm suffering through fishing withdraw now that I'm back here at home in Pa. Congrats to ya Brian! Enjoy your big day, cause it's downhill from there my man . -
Most of the time one....but I ran two a few times. When I run one I run it out the shoot, but when I ran two I put them in the dipsey holders on the side cause I only have an 8 ft beam and copper tangles can get pricey. I keep meaning to run it off the planer board but I just haven't gotten to that yet. Good luck next week, you should have plenty of fish to play around with. Strait out, west or east....it's all good but I seem to end up slightly west most days. Rod

We fished out of Oswego the past few days and though it was pretty slow by normal standards, we managed some fish. I don't give reports very often but there's been very little on the Oswego port lately so I thought I'd contribute for a change We also stayed for Harborfest......Fireworks were awesome!! On 7/27, my 8 yr old son solo'd his first big king...19+lbs with no help from me except netting. He broke down in tears with about 10 ft to go saying he was to tired and couldn't battle it anymore, but with some encouragement from me ( SUCK IT UP....he's almost in the net!!!...lol) he stuck with it till the end and made his dad proud. This King came on a taped up nk 28 kevorkian spoon. My son and I headed out again on the 29Th and found loads of bait in shallow so we set up and worked it pretty hard. He slept in the cabin while I set up. As soon as I figured out some problems we were having with our sub troll thanks to our scotty stacker's, we started hitting fish. First fish was a 14 lb king. I called my son out to fight the fish, but he just handed the pole back to me saying he was to tired and returned to the cabin. While I was removing the hook the other rigger fired and as I looked up I saw a beauty of a steel head breaking water several times....then it was gone The Steel head hit a Carmel dolphin nk 28. We managed one more king and the wind picked up and the bite stopped for us. The 30Th found very different conditions.....the water up top was very cold (an upwelling after the blow?) Worked the bait in 50-60 ft again with only one hit in 55 fow on a white spinney and a crushed ice fly. I headed out deeper and had a knock off @ 115 fow on the 400 copper rod with a white & blue spinney w/hammer fly. We picked up our first fish @ 120 fow on the same copper set up. This fish had apparently regurgitated it's last meal.....a pretty large fish we figured was a trout ?? Any thoughts? Next fish did not come till I hit 320 fow...70 down on a white spinney w/green dots and a crushed ice fly. Next hit came over 420 fow off the rigger 75 down on a chart. e chip and a green apple fly but I was to slow to the rod. I started our troll back in and had a release over 337 fow down 72 on a nk28 green thunder spoon, but no one was home. Around 325 fow, 70 down our rigger fired and it had to be the biggest king I've had on to date. It was smoking line so fast I was awe struck. After smoking off 2-300 feet in just seconds it hit a kink in the spool which stopped the line from spooling and just like that. the 30 lb test broke and he was gone with my chrome dodger, mirage fly and 400 ft of line :x We picked up a smaller king over 245 fow, again on the copper with the blue & white spinney & hammer fly and called it a day. I managed to go out from 9-12 the following day on the Murphy's law boat but it was real slow and we managed 2 for 3 with both fish coming on thumper rods and 1.5 lb weights. First was on a prism e chip and a green crinkle fly out 150. Second was on a white & green dot spinney/ tg fly out 175. The wind had shifted back out of the west as I was leaving, so I'd guess the action should get better soon, if it hasn't already. Go out and fish every chance you get. The Harborfest fireworks were amazing!! Tight lines Rod K Lucky Enuff

Scotty Stackers on Sub Troll cable
Fishtails replied to waterlogged's topic in Tackle and Techniques
Yep...messed with our speed and temp a lot. Must be the large metal clip. Once we removed the stacker.....all was fine. We kept questioning why we had so much blow back on the rigger balls, but it was our first day with a pair of new sharks, so we thought maybe they we're 10's instead of 12's?? At one point in the Lsrc, we were fishing off the starboard side of Team Cold Steel, and I mentioned to Clark how slow they were trolling  We slowed down to their speed and our sub troll read 2 to 2.25 mph. For the most part we ran 2.5 to 3 for down speed, but our gps speed was 3.7 and up   Once I realized it I tried some cannon stackers I had on the boat and they worked just fine. Rod -
Well said Brad. I too was shocked to find the captain's meeting was changed. I showed up @ 7:30 and found out the meeting was over, but Rich D was nice enough to go over everything with me....thanks Rich. I was in Oswego for Harborfest so I had no way of knowing any changes took place. Either way, it all worked out so no big deal. It was the first one and things are bound to be a little bumpy. Changing the time of the meeting is really the only thing I'd say should have not happened. Our team will be glad to participate again next year and I'm sure it will run much smoother. I don't know that we really have the right to complain. Putting one of these events together must be a huge undertaking and we should be thanking those who did their best to make it happen for us. Yes, things may need to be changed, but I'm sure lessons have been learned. My guess is that the ones who complain the most about the rules ( I saw alot of it in the Oswego pro/am also) are the first ones who'd cry if all these derbies & pro/am's went away. As for Team Lucky Enuff, we'd like to thank those who did their best to put the lsrc together for all your time and effort and we look forward to an improved event in 08. Rod K

On Saturday I'll already be out fishing by the time you get there. We are fishing the Little Salmon River Chall. that day. We will likely be out front of the harbor at that time, then slowly working our way towards 9 mile. Give me a call on the cell or call Lucky Enuff on ch 68 and I'll give you all the info I have. Rod P.S.....Ray K....don't be calling my cell during the LSRC pretending to be enzo looking for info....I'll figure it out -

If you don't mind me asking, does the dalmation have spots on just one side, or both?? Thanks, Rod -
Enzo, I'll help you get your dad into some fish if I can. I will be staying in Oswego at Wrights marina starting Wednesday night through the weekend. I'll be staying on the boat on blue dock #20 (boat name is Lucky Enuff). You can stop by or call me on my cell @ 610-217-4516. I'll let you know what's hot and where the fish are, assuming I can figure it out myself  Tip: If your going this weekend....fish the early morning. Get on the lake by 5 or 6 am (you should be doing that anyway). It's Harborfest weekend and the town of Oswego will be a mob scene. Rod

If you can get down to where Yankee suggests, I'm sure you'll find good fishing. That's a 40 mile one way run by water for me from our camp, so I've only done it once. As for Clayton, to be honest I have fished the lake this year more than the river, but Fishers Landing ( just a few miles east of Clayton) is a favorite area of mine when I get the time. Right across from Rock Island light on the opposite side of the channel is a great shoal and a drop off that always yields nice bass and eyes in off peak boating times. I'll run the 15 miles from our camp just to jig that ledge at dawn. Best of luck Rod

lol....I hear ya Rich. I'll talk to you Friday. I'm just curious how many of you guys are firm believers in using "something". For example, I don't get why wd-40 works?? I met some guys last week who swear by it, and they outfished me by more than a couple fish that day.
-
Question for all you Salmon pro's. Do you use scents or not ? If so, what's your favorite? I know some use wd-40, anise oil, smelly jelly and so on....what and why? We have a mild debate on our boat on using scents. I keep a few onboard, but don't use them much. One evening I cleaned the boat and got Bleachwhite on the downrigger balls so i rinsed them off and soaked them with scent over night. Next morning we had the best morning of the entire week. I just can't remember the name of the scent I used..maybe Clark remembers? Maybe it was the scent...maybe just being in the right place @ the right time ?? Rod

moor sub troll question
Fishtails replied to thumbburn's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
The dot erabbit mentions is actually in the digital box where the temp. reading is....but that is the newer units and I'm unsure if the older units are like this or not?? As stated, the probe is water activated and will not work out of the water. After changing the 9 volt and checking all the connections I guess I'd look at the antenna next, but it'd look at the power supply very closely. Also, watch that 150 lb leader, if you latch on to anything on the bottom you'll loose your ball and probably the probe as well. That's what the 80 lb is for.....lighter than your cable so you shouldn't loose the probe if you catch bottom. Tight Lines Rod -
That's very cool Ray....We look forward to meeting you guys there. Rod Lucky Enuff
