  1. AHHH, give em a break Brian. The Gander in Watertown is hands above the others I've been to, not that the others have set the bar very high. It's not like their a Cabela's or Bass Pro....they are what they are. At least they have people working the store in Watertown.
  2. Hey Chris....It was good having you out on the boat a couple weeks ago. Sorry I got there a little late in the am with the boat.... Throw me a pm if you want to head out again. I'll agree that the opti snubbers are great. It's the only one we use on our boat. Rod
  3. Here's a nice knot site with real cool animation. http://www.marinews.com/Silly-Snell-348.php Rod
  4. I know..... I'm a little late on some of these posts....playing catch up after three weeks off. Rich....thanks for those Savants you gave me at Oswego. I look forward to giving them some action this next week. I must agree that the paint on those spoons look awesome. I've been running a lot of taped NK & Stinger kevorkians lately (one of the hot color spoons for us this year) and after a few fish, all the paint is gone. Those kings put a licking on spoons. I don't know what process Savant uses in paint but they sure look good and hold up even better! I'm bringing my 8 yr old up for the LSRC. We'll be fishing Oswego next Thursday and Friday, then the lsrc on Saturday with Clark & Smitty so anyone in the area give us a call on 68......Lucky Enuff Rod
  5. Clark, I saw what your speaking of in the Cicero store first hand. Normally, I frequent the Watertown Gander mountain. Good store, set up well and there's always someone asking if you need a hand. As you know, when we were fishing in the Oswego pro am, I decided to get a new marine radio for the boat. Dave and I went to Gander mountain....exausted from several days of hard fishing. I could barely keep my eyes open, but I really wanted a new radio and a few other toys. I found the store layout is very different from the Watertown Gm, so I had to lap the store to find what I wanted. I found the boating and fishing sections to be in opposite ends of the store. Kinda odd, but whatever. I found two radios on display in the fishing section, but after tracking down someone for help, he said they were displys and the radios were in the boating section. After trecking to the other end of the store, I had to search for help again. Finally found someone and they said sorry, but they were out of marine radios. Back to the fishing section, to see If I couldn't buy the dipslay model. Again....search for help. Found the same guy I spoke with earlier. He said he'd see if he could find the packaging and he'd sell me the display model. 10 min. later he comes out of the back with a brand new radio, says he found them in the storage room, so buying the display model would not be necessarry :x .
  6. Thanks Chris. We've decided to do the run by water. I spoke with Rich D on the phone this morning and he's going to see if he can find a place to put me for an hour or two, but if not we'll still be okay. We'll have a car parked @ Mikes or the public launch and If need be I'll drop off my team and head back to Oswego with the boat, letting my teammates take care of everything from that point on. Hopefully, we can find a place to park the boat so I can join the post fishing fun for an hour or so. Either way works. We look forward to a great day of fishing! Rod
  7. I'm hoping someone can give me some advise on a delema I have. I am going to fish in the Little Salmon river challenge on the 28th, but I also have a slip reserved at Wright's marina in Oswego for that week for Harborfest. The 28th is also the big day in Oswego with the fireworks. I have never been to Harborfest, but I understand the town will be jammed with people & traffic. I'll be staying on the boat, so what I'd like to do is get up early and fish the derby out of Oswego. I'm just unsure on the traffic logistics on getting to Mikes Marina from Oswego during Harborfest, and worst yet getting back?? How far of a run is it by water?? Depending on water conditions, would it be better to do the travel to and from the Little Salmon from Oswego by water, or should I plan on doing it by car? I just don't know what would be best, or how long either will take? Thanks for any ideas! Rod
  8. I teamed up with Clark (aka Waterlogged) and our two friends Smitty and Dave and entered my first Pro Am as team Lucky Enuff. What a blast!! Except for one dumb a$$ mistake on my part (resulting in a Coast Guard tow...details to follow), it was a really awesome time. I'm really glad I decided to enter and we're already planing on two for next year. We pre-fished 3 days and found the fish to be scattered all over. We caught fish strait out of the harbor, to the west, and to the east. I've never fished Oswego before, I'll be a regular from here on out. We decided to start the Pro Am by fishing our waypoints to the west of the harbor. We had done decent in pre-fish, but never really slammed them. Mostly just a steady pick. All that changed on day one of the tourn. No sooner we set up @ the 6am start, rods started firing. I can't speak for Clark, but looking back I don't think I was expecting the fast paced action we encountered right off the bat. It was a little crazy for a group of guys who never really fished together before, and nothing in Pre-fish prepared us for the rods to be popping at the pace they were. It was semi madness fot the first two hours and caused us to make some mental mistakes that in turn caused us to drop a lot of fish. In pre-fish I think we boated all but one fish, going something like 13 for 14. On Saturday, the first day of the Pro Am we started the first 2 hours or so going 3 for 9 Three of the kings we dropped were on copper. We also lost a steelhead at the back of the boat due to a liittle team indecision as to weather we should boat it or not once we realized it was legal size....the fish decided for us and swam off  We should have boxed out by 8am, but that's fishing I guess. Instead, we only had three in the box and then the fishing slowed a bit. We were over 250 fow so while in search mode we went to 350 fow and hit a steelhead that we lost at the boat. No sooner that fish swam off laughing at us the starboard engine we were trolling with shut off without warning   We all just looked at each other like WTF ???? I've only owned the boat for 3 months so I'm still getting to know it. I've come to learn that all the electronics run off the port side motor's battery. Since we were not running it much, we unknowingly drained the port battery and since the two sides trickle together the electronics started drawing off the starboard battery. We also learned (the hard way) that a slightly loose alt. belt was keeping the battery from charging at slow trolling speeds. The result was 2 dead batteries and two motors that we couldn't start :x We tried to put them together in series but the port battery was totally drained. I had two spares....but they were in my truck   Since everyone was busy fishing the tourn, we couldn't get anyone out to give us a jump. We totally understood, and we bobbed along for a couple hours until the Coast Guard finally came out to pull us in ( thanks in large part to my wife ) What a process for a boat that only needed a jump start  It took a couple hours from the time they headed out untill we got back to port, but we made it into port with less than 10 minutes to spare and we got to the wiegh-in station with our 3 fish in time so I guess we really were Lucky Enuff. It was pretty cool watching the Coast Guard, but it was total overkill and it was obvious we became a training mission. They were a friendly group of guys. I did learn on my inspection that all 9 flares I had aboard expired so I guess I'll be getting a bill for that :x Two freshly charged batteries (and two spares) and we were back in action for day two. We just couldn't get a program going on day two and ended the day 4 for 6. We ended up in 18th or 19th out of 29 am teams so for all we endured and the loss of half a fishing day, I guess we did ok. It sure was fun and we are going to enter 2 Pro/Am's next year. It was nice meeting such a great group of people, including several from this board like Rich D, Nemesis, Mark (Reeljerks), The Yankee Troller team and others. We'll be fishing the Little Salmon River Challenge on the 28th and I hope to meet more of you there. I'd also like to thank all who take their time to put these events together. What a huge undertaking! Thanks for all the effort!!!! Rod K, Team Lucky Enuff
  9. It was a great time having you guys on the boat. Clark, I really enjoyed fishing with you and Smitty. Yeah, we had a few moments of not seeing things exactly the same, but that's cool with me. We we're over tired after 5 days of fishing. We had some real brite moments too, and I'm really looking forward to doing it again! Eugene....glad you got to pull in a nice Brown, but sorry that big King never got to the net :x At least you got to battle with it for awhile. There's no turning back now Eugene.....you've been hooked At least 2 Pro/Am's planned for next year Rod
  10. Sorry for the late post, but I've been on vacation since the Pro/Am. I must ditto what Clark said in that it was great to meet some of you guys. A special thanks to Rich D for all the help & well wishes. Rod
  11. Thanks Billy.....She said that was the plan. I see there is 4 or 5 different styles now. Are you making all of them? Should I have ordered them all...lol Thanks again Billy....Hope you had a great weekend! Rod
  12. Just checked with Shawn's Marina. Hey Billy, my order is on hold awaiting you to tape some habanero's  Rod
  13. Hey Brian. I'll be in the area for 2-3 weeks and plan on fishing out of the Stoney launch a couple times before heading to Oswego on the 1st. If your going out (or want to), give me a call on my cell phone. If you see a gold van in the parking lot with a license 2 chill plate on the front, I'm out fishing . Tight lines, Rod
  14. I just ordered a couple, along with a bunch of other spoons from the Shawns Marina website. I was impressed with the selection of spoons they had. Now, I'm waiting to see how their delivery time is? On the habanaro topic, they have a few different patterns. I think the new one is a grape habanaro? Maybe Billy tapes them....I don't know? Here's a link to the habanaro's on the website: http://www.shawnsmarina.com/index.php/cPath/51_38 Rod
  15. Well, I'm gonna spool a few reels and compare. I'll run both for a couple weeks and see if I like it, or if there is an advantage or disadvantage. If you see me at the Oswego Pro-Am and all my reels are spooled red...I liked it . If not, you may be able to buy a couple thousand yards from me real cheap As for using it in the Salmon river, I would not use in such shallow water. That's not what it's intended use is. I know this, It won't be any more visable than wire, copper or leadcore. I guess I'll see what the fishies think?? Thanks Rod
  16. Here's an article about the use of red line. It makes sence and It can't hurt so I'm giving it a whirl. http://fishing.about.com/od/basicfishin ... ngline.htm Rod
  17. Greetings fellow fisherman....I have a question for you: Are many of you using red fishing line ?? I just bought a 3000 yd spool of 30lb red fishing line to spool all my reels. I read somewhere that at deeper depths it was virtually invisible. If this is true, is it still necessary to use a fluorocarbon leader, or would the red line suffice? I'm planing on still running fluoro leaders, but I was Just curious how you guys felt about this ? Thanks, Rod
  18. Cool picture. Thanks for sharing. I had the good fortune of wrestling with some of those while fishing in a blue marlin tourn. off Grand Cayman Island a few years back. Really cool looking...great fighters and even better table fare! We didn't land a Marlin but did manage second in the tournament with a 100 lb tuna. I love to see kids out enjoying the sport!!! Rod
  19. Way to go Rich! Really nice day with the eyes. I'll be fishing henderson in a week or two so your report was great to hear. Thanks. Rod
  20. Wow...sounds like the fishing was out of control for you guys. Glad to hear that the fishing is getting hot in Oswego. I'm getting ready to head up there real soon. Congrats on the great weekend!! Rod
  21. Paul, I should mention that these fish came from the lower Delaware, not the upper or west branch where wild trout thrive. It's really odd because the lower Del. holds very few trout and the few trout found are from stocked streams. This area takes effort to reach and also to fish, so it gets fairly low pressure from fisherman. Rod
  22. Thanks guys. As the story goes, My son has had this thing about rainbows....don't know where it came from? Fishing shows, I guess? I take him fishing all over the east coast and for the past year he's been saying, hey dad, think we might catch a rainbow trout here? It's gotten to be a real joke in our family. I don't fish stocked trout streams, it's just not my cup of tea anymore and we have not hooked up with a steelhead with him on the boat yet. I've been waiting for the right time to take him to the Delaware because as you may know, it can be really dangerous for children. Right now the water lever is down and conditions are perfect ( I made him wear his life vest anyway ). Now he's hooked and he want's to go back so I'll take a good camera and capture the color of these wild trout. Like you said Paul, they are real jaw droppers. Tight lines Rod
  23. Thought I'd share a pic of my 8 yr old's first native PA rainbow. Sorry...the pic was taken with a camera phone so it's lousy, but even so you should be able to see how fantastic these fish are. The stripe and gill plate are brilliant bright pink.....really nice looking fish. I fish a spot on the Delaware river that I discovered 10 years ago that holds a great population of native trout. Browns, rainbows and brooks. There are hatchery fish there as well that trickle in from streams and I guess they have reproduced over the years. There is a deep narrow cut where the river is forced around an island and the water really picks up steam in this section. Right in the same location is a REALLY cold creek that empties into the river. On the right day...the down creek section is magic for trout. Once the evening hatch started they were breaking water all around us. I'd guess 70% of the trout we have caught have been native. I almost never keep them, but throwing the two we caught back would have broke my son's heart...so I agreed to keep these two only so he could show his mother. The flesh is every bit as orange as a salmon....maybe more so. I've never taken him there cause it's a really long, steep hard walk and we have to wade into fast water on slippery rock, but I figured he was finally old enough. He fell about 10 times but has not stopped talking about those fish since we caught them. I bet he's dreaming about them as I write this. They were both around 18-19" and he landed one totally solo. Since I discovered lake O, I almost never fish this place anymore, but next time I'll take a good camera. Rod
  24. Rich, I was told it was first come first serve & you could not reserve a slip. Is this incorrect?? Guess I better call and double check tomorrow. I've been stuck in Pa working so I can't wait to get up there and get some lines wet. I plan on putting in at Oswego the Mon before the Pro/Am. Will you be fishing out of the Seaduction? I'll see you there. Rod
  25. We will definitly be joining you guys in the festivities.....I look forward to meeting some of you there. Rod
