I think they just get super spooky and much less bold in clear water. -
If there was only one piece of advice I can give you it would be to find the right water clarity. Green/Slightly stained water = FISH ON! Leader length/lure selection won’t matter as much as the fish will active with this water clarity. Only have clear water and muddy water and the fishing will be difficult. Muddy water try bright/gaudy lures, clear water try natural colors with light line and long leads to try and get some bites, but most likely the fishing won’t be great in these conditions. Hope this helps

If your in shallow, run a orange or pink stick just outside the prop wash. I've actually caught coho in july, 5 ft down, 10 ft back while attaching my cheater line with 70+ degree surface temps.

Quick question from a potential customer. What methods of payment will be available..Cash, check, cards?? thx DR -
I thought I saw somewhere that the new Fish Hawk now shows actual depth of your ball as well. There is nothing about it on their site. Has anybody else heard this or know if this is true? Thanks, DR

I know some of you complained about theft from your boats this Summer. I hope these are the culprits. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/49700198/ns ... hester_ny/ DR

Thats good to know slipbob because that is actually who I booked a trip with. Looks like a good operation. Booked a full day nearshore trip.

Tomb, coming back on the 24th. Thinking about doing the nearshore charter for permit, bonefish, tarpon, snapper, shark etc. Will have the wife with me and I hear the offshore gig this time of year can be hit or miss. DR

Not Lake Ontario related, but I'm headed to Key West in a couple weeks and I want to do a day charter. Anybody have any experience fishing down there in October? Looking for recommendations. Thanks in advance, DR

Mature Natural Fish From The West End
Sweet Caroline replied to Sweet Caroline's topic in Open Lake Discussion
Thanks fisherman21. If everybody agrees that the Genny has zero natural reproduction it seems odd that are we seeing fish being caught with their adipose fin intact. Just questioning the validity of the adipose fin in determining natural vs stocked. I'd hate to see future stocking decisions based on this info. DR -
Just curious if anybody is still catching a large percentage of natural mature fish (with adipose) from any place other than the Salmon River now that most of these fish should have made it back to the Salmon River. Would seem odd if we were catching a lot of wild fish staging off of places like Olcott, the Genny or the Oak where there hasn’t been any documented natural reproduction. Reports from the Salmon River are that the majority of the fish they are catching there have their adipose fins. In places that have little natural reproduction I would expect these to be few and far between. Worthy of a conversation…I think. Thanks DR

Years ago a 40 plus pounder almost always won the ESLO/LOC. In fact, I think one year in the late 90's there were 8 or 9 entered over 40. I guess I have to ask what has changed between then and now that we are not consistently seeing fish that large anymore? DR

downrigger ball blowback question
Sweet Caroline replied to tbulhead's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
I always use down temp to make sure I'm in the correct zone. -
It could be that a lot of the success of the natural reproduction for kings is that they do not have to spend a summer in the river. They are hatched in Oct/Nov and out by May/June. Cohos, steelhead, Atlantics spend at least one summer in the river where I think they are subject to a lot more mortality due high river temps. YOY salmonids cannot withstand water temps in the upper 60’s, lower 70’s for extended periods.

Splicing Wire to Wire
Sweet Caroline replied to Sweet Caroline's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
Thanks. Do you have a link? I couldn't fidn the video -
We've recently experimented with tapping wire to wire using a crimp the same way you would connect the wire to a swivel. We'll tap in 100-200 ft of wire after getting it kinked in a tangle. We caught some big kings already after doing this so it seems to hold up. The only problem is some times the crimp will get caught up while letting line out or getting caught in the guides. Wondering if anybody knows of a better way of splicing wire to wire? I used to replace the whole spool everytime but it can get expensive doing this. Thanks in advance, DR

We had an insane bite fishing the same area, pretty much doing the same thing as you. Salmon did some damage to us as well. At one point, we had both wire dipseys and the 300 ft copper tangled and our planer board broke off all at the same time. Took us out of commission for 1 1/2 undoing that mess. Before that we were getting them 3 at a time. Hope it lasts a few more weeks.
