  1. You hit another of my pet peeves Pancake weights. Years ago I bought 2 13 # pancakes trying to win the blowback battle. Suddenly , I’m getting terrible tangles. What gives ? Made the discovery that pancakes take on a life of their own in cross currents. I fished with them for a few trips and they gathered dust in my cellar for many years. I finally dumped , I mean sold them last year. Hope the new owner has a good vocabulary He’ll need it. Lol Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  2. Went to 16# torpedoes from troutman87 and have never looked back. Got a couple of 15 # cannonballs I keep in case ( very rare ) I want to target oil cans on the bottom if they hang up , not so much crying involved [emoji13] Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  3. It shows the distance from your ducer to any object in its cone . Bottom , fish and your weights Fish are not attached to your boat ( at least not yet, lol ). That’s why the show as inverted U’s or V’s. The sonar sees them as deeper ( further away ) as you move over them the apex of the U ( and true depth ) and again the sonar sees them as further away as you move past. The sonar is seeing your weights at a constant distance , hence the line. They are NOT at that depth. They are at that DISTANCE from the ducer. Brand of sonar or quality of ducer is immaterial. They all work the same way. Takes a little bit of thought to get your head around it. But it’s the way it is Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  4. Here’s another one and a side note. The depth ( distance finder ) finder is not showing you the true depth of your weight or bait. It’s showing the distance from the transducer. Your distance finder shows your weight at 130 ft. You are actually fishing much shallower due to blow back. https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/proxy/E0OZqdUtA3dDjaF4ASo1IIRJRqmHNvpKYbi3yXTkjqm0ZF-XGLMAnNLTOzhbyJFHfSvimnWkRpdZRIlRUZD0j_gBuiGej1P_6toihvSfjcpmgH9JEtj2Bdjh65g- Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  5. Wrong. There are several charts for angle versus depth with amount of cable out. You can also figure it yourself Measure the angle of your cable and how deep you want to fish. The equation will tell you how much cable you need out to reach that depth https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRFi2e-KTz7wyU19YvAWW_MxXvulBJUWm9xAg&s Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  6. Apparently it’s only a requirement if the marine radio is turned on . If you choose to turn it off the requirement doesn’t count. Lol. The purpose of the FCC regulation was to relieve congestion on VHF channel 16, the distress, safety and calling frequency. FCC regulations require boaters having VHF radios to maintain a watch on either VHF channel 9 or channel 16, whenever the radio is turned on and not communicating with another station. 7. If you have a marine radio aboard , you are required by law , to maintain a watch on channel 16 at all times Fishing or not
  8. Oswego yesterday Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  9. Might be time to pull lines and head in. Lol🤪 Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  10. I have mag 10 Stx. Yes they are fast. But my auto stop works smoothly. The weight stops at the surface with no snap or jerk Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  11. Save your money. Snubbers aren’t needed if you set your releases so that the weight stays in the water at all times Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  12. I NEVER let my weight come out of the water. Me releases are adjusted so I can set with weight in the water. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  13. This is one I’ve had for a long time. It’s dated 1992. GPS was new and not very accurate due to selective availability loran was still very much in use Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  14. I’ve been fishing this lake for over 40 years and am still learning or maybe relearning. I found an old fishing hotspots map of Henderson in my old collection it’s dated 1992. And I’ll be damned. They call the sharp drop off west of Stoney point “ the wall “. The wall out in the shipping lanes is also labeled. Never recall the drop off by Stoney being called the wall. But there it is. This map also has all the TD s from loran. Somebody was looking for a map with this overlay. As a side note. I lost a cannon speed and temp probe and a 13 lb weight right there. Not paying attention to depth. She comes up in a hurry. Lol Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  15. Totally agree. Everyone has their own name for places and things. Somewhere along the line flashers became paddles. Lol Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  16. Ok Guess everyone has names for structure. I’ve been fishing the trench for going on 30 years. The wall refers to the cliff face out in the shipping channel between Gallo and Main Duck islands. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  17. Wall??? Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  18. According to the sheriff’s Dept. The accident happened much closer to shore. If the 30 ft is correct , that’s exactly where the rocks are To the right of the north rip rap wall https://www.localsyr.com/news/local-news/lake-ontario-boating-accident-one-person-rescued-by-kayaker/ Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  19. I stand corrected All these years I’ve been under the , I guess false , understanding that a cuddy was an enclosed compartment. I always dig out the required number of vests and have them , along with the throwable tucked in the gunwales. I will still do this because things happen fast out there. But you’re right. They can be left in the cabin if it’s not locked. My bad Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  20. Life vests in the cuddy , Illegal while under way. They should be on deck and readily available Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  21. You can clearly see the hazards on your GPS or NOAA chart The hazard buoys would be to the left of the green aid to navigation coming in from the lake. Always keep the red aid to starboard when returning. If you were to the left of the green aid , you were in the rocks Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  22. Did you run into the rocks to the left of the rip rap jetties ? There are hazard buoys there but not lit. They would fit the distances reported. Glad everyone is safe Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  23. Where did you see 1 footers forecast ? NOAA was at 2-3 which means 3-4 easy Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  24. Absolutely. It’s a federal law to have level buoyancy also has a self inflating lifeboat under the seat and is equipped with epirb. We spared no expense Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  25. They look great. Do the wander in currents ? I had 13 lb pancakes that were a nightmare in any kind of wind or down currents. Tangle city Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
