  1. I don’t know the gentleman that lost his life RIP , or the captain of the vessel that claimed the life. But I am sure that he has not heard the end of this matter from the authorities. There is a rule called. “ manifestly unsafe voyage “. The captain of the vessel is responsible for damages. I believe it may cost him much more than the loss of his fishing partner and his boat and gear. Keep in mind. YOU are responsible for safe voyages. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  2. You are absolutely right. A radio on a recreational vessel under 20 meters is not required by law. If a smaller pleasure vessel has a marine radio it falls under “ voluntary “ regulations. Please access USCG regulations under mandatory monitoring I quote “ any vessel either mandatory or voluntary , must monitor channel 16 , when not actually communicating on another frequency. Read the rules You are mistaken Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  3. I say again , if you have a VHF radio on your vessel it , Must , by law and FCC regs , be tuned to monitor channel 16 , the international hailing and emergency frequency . If you want to chatter on 68 or 72 , then change to that frequency to chat , when you’re finished return to 16. If you want to listen for the hot bite get a radio that monitors and scans several frequencies. If you're going to do something , do it right there could be a boat 100 meters off your starboard side in serious trouble , and if you are on 68 or 72 listening for the “ hot bite” you will never hear his distress call on 16
  4. Radios with one channel are out of date. VHF radios are not expensive. Most modern radios scan several channels and have WX which will emit a warning if severe weather threatens The radio can then be tuned to a weather frequency for info. Warnings are broadcast on channel 16. Which MUST , by law , be monitored for emergency broadcasts Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  5. I’ve caught lake trout near Charity shoal. There’s a big hole just south of the shoal. And walleyes up on the shoal. Careful of getting into Canadian waters. Gps almost a must Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  6. This is an annual occurrence . They start drawing the lake down in August every year . The lower water level minimizes damage to the shoreline from ice build up
  7. I totally agree with Sk8man I used 12 # finned cannonballs for a long time . There where times (depending on speed and down currents) when I had 150 ft of cable out to reach 110 ft . I switched to 16 # torpedoes from Harvey and have never been happier
  8. IMHO. 8# is too light for fishing Lake O. The depths you need to reach and the currents you contend with need a lot more weight. I personally have gone to 16 # torpedoes and am very happy with their performance I would add that you should stay away from pancake weights. They will give you tangles every time Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  9. I was unable to attend this meeting in Henderson . Here are the reports from the Watertown Daily Times . They still have a low key on news about the project and the fact that Apex was willing to provide free transportation and meals to anyone that would attend the meeting and support the wind farm , speaks volumes .The fact that the boat launches in the area will be commandeered by the construction crews is just now rearing it's ugly head .http://www.watertowndailytimes.com/news03/some-pro-many-con-at-galloo-hearing-20180815
  10. That’s the watchword “ commercial fishing vessel “. A boat trolling for salmon on Lake O is not a commercial fishing vessel. It’s a recreational vessel. It must give way to a sail boat under sail. The only time it is the stand on vessel is when the blow boat is overtaking from astern the blow boat is the give way vessel the text in the video said it was a charter boat. Which makes it a recreational vessel Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  11. I think aluminum boats are painted. Fiberglass is gel coat My bad. Forgot most Starcraft are aluminum. You should be able to get touch up from a Starcraft dealer Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  12. The “paint “ on your boat is gel coat. I have used spectrumcolor. Com They color match perfectly and make small touch up kits
  13. 28” draft you be out pushing Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  14. I ran past them on the way in. Talked to a guy at the launch that started in 70 -80 fow. He boated 1 king. The fish were laying in the bottom and wouldn’t budge. Kings staging ? He ran out to 130 and got into the laker action Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  15. Got out early this morning. Headed out to 130 fow off the finger. Bite was hot. A king right off the bat. About 15#. Then the Lakers decided to play. Landed and released 10 LT before 8:30 a double fired I landed them both solo. Don’t ask me how. One was a pig. See pic one more teen king and I called it a day at 11:00
  16. Info is going to be hard to come by with LOC derby firing up tomorrow I’m going out Sunday post my r silts then. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  17. His reference to “ sunken island “ had me I know the gas bouy well. Been to the wall many times Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  18. I was thinking the same thing Drowned island is just offshore from black pond and it’s a long run to deep water from there. I fish that area in the spring for Browns
  19. Great information. I am in the process of emailing the secretary. I believe Apex is trying to ram this through before any further action can take place
  20. Here’s a story on the project I hope to make the next meeting on Tuesday http://www.wwnytv.com/story/38885003/galloo-island-wind-presentation-draws-crowd#.W3P0Et82r4E.mailto Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  21. I hope some of the charter caps out if Henderson attend the meeting and can give us some updates Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  22. They are here !! Apex clean energy is having a meeting at the Henderson fire hall tonight. ( there was one last night also ). They have kept this meeting very quiet. There is no notification or coverage in the Watertown daily times or on newzjunky I hope the people of Henderson ask the right questions. Apex wants 30 turbines on Galloo island to start My biggest concern is the 30 mile long underwater cable that connects the turbines to Oswego. It will run under some of the richest fishing grounds on Lake Ontario. Will there be exclusion zones ? What effect will voltage leaking have in the fish ? These questions seem to be ignored by Apex. I wish I had known a little earlier about this meeting so I could attend. I am trying to stay on top of this , Apex seems to have gone stealth Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  23. That’s an excellent point. If you run boards and long lines at any time of year , you better have enough crew to pull boards in and perhaps long lines as well at a moments notice. Otherwise you run the risk of donating expensive tackle to the fish gods Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  24. Too much commotion puts the bite down. Salmon are spookey best to get away from the pack , long lines or not Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  25. There are a lot of inexperienced fisher people on the water That said , it gets crowded this time of year and the 500 coppers should stay in the boat. It’s unreasonable to ask other boats to give you the kind of clearance that planer boards out 150 ‘ on each side and long lines behind them. Sometimes , due to other traffic , it’s impossible to give that much leeway Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
