Just an update to the Sandy Creek Pen Rearing project: As planned we will again receive 15,000 Steelhead. 7500 will be direct stocked into the creek and 7500 will be placed in pens. The fish will be arriving on Thursday April 2nd. The truck will be at the state launch at noon for the direct stocking and then proceed to Sandy Creek Marina for transferring the remaining 7500 into the pens. Everyone is welcome to come and observe both stockings. The kids really get a kick out watching these fish being stocked. If you wish to volunteer for a feeding please contact Bob Holden 503-3303 and he will be glad to assign you a feeding time. The fish are fed every two hours between 8am and 6pm. There are still open feeding times available. Hope to see you there.

On Thursday April 3rd, 1pm the pens will be transferred from storage to Sandy Creek Marina. Either Saturday or Sunday the Boy Scouts who are involved in the project will be putting the nets on the pens. Usually a pretty active time with the scouts doing their best to help out. We do not have a date for the Steelhead to be delivered. I will post when we have more information. Bob Holden is putting the feeding schedule together and if anyone would like to be scheduled for a feeding please email Bob at [email protected] Feedings start at 8am with two hour intervals until the last feeding at 6pm. Please note that the 10am feeding is done by students from Brockport State as part of an accredited course. Also anyone is welcome to attend a feeding and help out even if you are not the scheduled person.Pens will again be located in the creek proper, same location as last year. Bob is using Tuesday April 15th as a start date and will adjust from there. Everyone is welcome to attend any of the project events.

Sorry for the somewhat late post. I have not been on the site for a few days. I saw the ice conditions I mentioned in person as I crossed the bridge at the falls. The conditions may have changed since then, However it was an incredible site to see ice that thick.
-
Just a quick posting. There is solid ice from the falls downriver as far as one can see. It looks to be about 10 ft thick. It was an impressive site seeing all the various formations. The river above the falls in the intake area still contains a large amount of ice along the shoreline.

Sandy Creek Pen Rearing Meeting Cancelled
Persistence replied to Persistence's topic in Open Lake Discussion
Guys, I will post the new date as soon as we receive more information from the DEC. Thanks for your continued interest in the pen project. -
My vote goes to the wire hits. To see that rod pound and struggle to get it out of the holder really is a rush. Jerry, I have come to know that downrigger hits on your boat are too dangerous!!!

Sandy Creek Pen Rearing Meeting Scheduled
Persistence replied to Persistence's topic in Open Lake Discussion
Misty IV, I trust the guys answered your question. I have read that the egg take was 1.5 million with a 70% eye up. So the numbers are about the same. I will try to nail down a good number and post the info. As was mentioned the survival rate is what is important. This year even more so as in the past, the pen sites need to keep a close eye on conditions in their waters to ensure a healthy stocking to the fishery. -
Not sure what happened here but I am reposting the meeting notice. The meeting for the Sandy Creek Pen Rearing Project is scheduled for Saturday March 8th at 1 pm in the Hamlin Town Hall. We have been notified by Matt Saunders, Region 8 Fisheries Representative, that due to the low harvest of Chinook eggs we should not plan on adding Chinooks to the project for this year. We will be getting our normal allotment of Steelhead which will be placed in two pens as last year. Last years project yeilding a very good stocking of good size Steelhead to the fishery. Hopefully we can mirror the results from last year. Agenda: Pen transfer from storage to the Sandy Creek maina Net Installation Pen Placement Feeding Schedules Steelhead release Pen Cleaning Everyone is welcome

The Sandy Creek Pen Rearing Meeting is scheduled for Saturday, March 8th at 1 pm at the Hamlin Town Hall. At this time the addition of Chinooks to the project has been put on hold due to the decreased egg collection from last fall. Region 8 fisheries representative Matt Sauders will provide updates to the project coordinator in the event there is a change. We will be getting our usual allotment of Steelhead for the project which will be placed in two pens. All are welcomed to attend the meeting.

Mark, I do not have any information as far as where the tags were made. I will contact Randy for that information and pass it along to you. Guys, I can see both sides of the issue of tagging fish. I posted the information as I thought it would be interesting to see data about a fish that was caught at least twice and compare the data. I really can not see a difference, other than who is doing it, when wire tags are placed in the heads of Steelhead and Lake Trout on a much larger population by our DEC and then we are asked to decapitate the fish, identified by a fin clip, to obtain the wire tag. We do have many knowledgable fishermen and women who post on this site and this post was just that- a knowledgable fisherman sharing information. I saw the fish that was caught off Devil's Nose and there was absolutely no damage to the fish. Randy is not just a fly by night guy. He works with many organizations in Canada to help promote the Lake Ontario fishery and is closely involved in the stocking programs of the OMNR. -

Jax, the tags are located alongside the dorsal fin and are about 3 inches long, yellow in color and very easy to see. -

Foster, hopefully you did not do much damage. Be careful on the point as you enter or leave the channel. Stay to the south guys.
