What does the coast guard launch at sodus look like???
RodBuster replied to RodBuster's topic in Open Lake Discussion
Time Out, i hear what you are saying. About 10 years ago we were out fishing and someone radioed out to say the chute was completely iced in. We were planning on dropping someone off at the lighthouse and then making a run to Pultneyville. An hour or two later the wind shifted and pushed the ice out of the way. I think if worse came to worse i could load on the beach...... We called the new owners of the bait shop up there (Used to be Abes) an they said it was clear. -
Is the launch at the Fort closed permanently, or just for the winter????

Tuesday i was fishing out of the Oak in about 175 of water when out of nowhere the border patrol baot pull up behind me with his blue light flashing. I had boards out both sides with about 75-100' leads on the rods. He got dangerosuely close to getting in my lines, but all three occupants where still in the cabin. I ddin't know what they were up to. Then they pulled up around the outside of the port side board and tucked in next to me. They then shut it down, while i was still trolling. In about two seconds my ski line was touching their boat. One office came out and I tried to calmly tell him that he was getting into my lines. The officer that had emerged from the cabin told the captain to pull forward. I was pretty miffed at this point. At that point they fianlly announced they were border patrol officers, asked me a bunch of questions, then told me the next time they pull up beside me i should pull up my lines immediately. Like i knew that! plus, you don't pull 8 rods with 100'leads up in a minute or two. Then the driver hit the throttle and they were gone (Looked like three 200 HP Mercs on the back) I wondered if anyone elese has had a similar experience?

Sodus point Report
RodBuster replied to salmonbound1's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Just a heads up about the coast guard launch, which is all the way out at the breakwall. The conrete is old and has a lip between two joints. if your boat is heavy and you have a trailer with crossmebers that dip down the front one will hit the lip on the way out. I actually sheared off a 7/16 dimaeter bolt one day. to avoid this leave your boat back on the trailer, a few feet from the front stop. The weight will be back causing the front crossmember to ride higher. Once you clear it, you can crank all the way on. Also, one of these days i am going to take my own saw and trim that tree that has grabbed a few of my rods on the hardtop. good luck -
Come on, I know you all have planer board set ups, BTT

Sodus 3/29
RodBuster replied to RodBuster's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
I suspect this fish was in maxwell, or maybe some other trib. I bet I saw 20 lamprey marks on browns in the last two trips. I noticed last year an increase, and this year it is even worse. -

good fishing at Sodus today.find the cloudy water and the fishing is very good. Last week i noticed more Lamprey marks. This week we caught one with five marks, four on one side. they better get going on the eradication. Also caught one of the most colorful browns I have ever seen on Lake O.

I have been running the same planer board mast set up for 20 years. Single Super Skis on port and starboard. The mast is positioned about 5' forward of the rod holder where the farthest rod forward sits. As you are aware if you have run boards, during a turn the outside tow line ends up closer to the rods on that side, in some cases touching. (One of my rods has been resting on the bottom in about 6' of water off Sodus for at least 15 years due to the tow line flipping it overboard). I am thinking about moving it forward, and seperating the mast from the retrieval reel. I have a hardtop, so the reel would be mounted to the side. My question is how far forward should I go. The longer the distance, the longer the retrievel line to reach the tow line when setup occurs. i just don't want to go too far. Thanks for any insight.

I was one of the other boats out front early. didn't do anything inside. We moved offshore (29 bar) and it was a decent pick. had trouble keeping them hooked up though. Did you see the size of those 2 pods of weeds? -
Thanks Ray, looks like I'm good to go. I'll be trying out my new Honda 8 HP as well. Sounds like DeJAVU. But I ended up buying mine over in Little Genesee at Glen Delong's. I got it end of last year but them my big motor quit so I didn't get to use it. If i get anything I'll post a report.

I'm no paypal expert but here is what I know. if you get a paypal account you can use it to buy things, and it will charge your credit card, which is on file. Or you can use money that you build up in your paypal accounbt to buy other things. I use mine on Ebay. When soemone pays me, I get in my paypal account and then the money is transfered to my bank checking account. It is a secure trasnfer, and it sometimes is insured. I would suggest you go on ebay and look up paypal. I found it pretty simple to get started. BTW, their is a fee everytime you do a transaction. So, if I get a payment from an Ebay item I sold, a small amount is deducted.

Sodus Report 2/9
RodBuster replied to RodBuster's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Legacy, it brought back good memories when i first started fishing in LO out of my 17' Sea Nymph. It was so easy to get to the water and fish. Not much worry about getting stuck at the launch, worrying about crashing on icey roads on the way there etc. I told my friend that owns the boat that catching a handful right out of the back gave me as much pleasure as catching 20 with the boards and all that rigging that goes with it. -
Not much going on in the way of reports, so i thought I would get the blood flowing for the upcoming season. My buddies and i couldn't take cabin fever any longer so we ventured to Sodus in his 16 foot crestliner. Small enough to get there quick, and increase our odds of actually being able to launch the boat vs my 21 footer. The coast guard launch was mostly open, with only a few big chunks which we pushed out of the way. We hit the water about 7:30. I looked at the water temperature reading, and was suprised to see it was only 32.3 degrees. i had hoped for something a little warmer. We set up just short of Maxwell ,and headed west. He doesn't have boards, so we just flatlined three rods. The water looked pretty good, bit i had hoped for as little more mud from the monsoon last week. We trolled over to Maxwell, and it wasn't running neasrly as good as i thought. Not even a half degree temp rise, and no color. We trolled over to Boulder, and a rod went off, but we missed. Soon we hooked up. Nice 5 pound brown. We picked away at few of them, all in one small area. Ended up getting 6 browns and one rainbow. Nice day. All on Rapala F9 black silver and rainbow. One interresting thing that I had not seen before. if you are familiar with Boulder, it is a steep, brushy bank on the east face. Well , we were fishing right there after we found a pocket of fish. About 1 PM we noticed a whitetail, laying about half way up the bank, watching us the whole day! Never moved.

Thanks for the replies. It gave us enough confidnece that we could get to the water. See my report in the reprt section.

Anyone know if the coast guard launch at sodus is free of ice? Thanks!!

The problem I see with a dipsey straight back is the interfrence if you get a hit on one of your riggers. Seems like that line would be in the way, and you wouldn't want to bring it in everytime you have a fish on another setup. I use lead core. If i want to get real deep I fasten a weight (even up to a pound ) where the lead core meats the leader. I use about 50 feet of mono as a leader, and back the leadcore with superbraid. If you get a hit on another rod, just move it to one side or the other accordingly. I call it the widow maker. Not really the most sporty of setups, but it does get fish.
