Sorry forgot to mention where I caught it. I was fishing Canandaigua.
-
Took the maiden voyage on Canandaigua March 15 as I had the day off. Trolled shallow with sticks and spoons looking mainly for bows or browns. Was looking to pick up around 12:30 when a rod went off. I finally brought the beautiful brown to the net after a sluggish fight. Ended up being 24.5" and 9.5 lbs. Great fish! Enjoy the pic below! P.S. My wife was recently saying if I catch a decent fish I should get it mounted for the wall. I have a couple deer heads, but not many fish despite fishing longer than I've hunted for. So this one is going on the wall...

Looking for a Rod/Reel combo or one or the other. I'm going to get a Seth Green set up together. Any help is appreciated. Thank you for your time.

So I'm all excited to get out and do a trial trip to make sure everything is working when I start having motor trouble at the launch. Here is the scenerio. Any help is greatly appreciated. My motor starts right up on choke. I leave it running and after about 5 minutes then it stalls out. I start it up again and it does the same thing. I decide to tinker around with it by starting it in choke, quickly taking it out of choke and then putting it in forward. I take off and it stalls out while in motion. I do the same thing again with the same result of stalling out while in motion. Then I try to keep pumping the gas while I'm in motion and the motor responds by running fine. As soon as I stop pumping the gas the motor quits again. I happened to notice a small amount of gas going in the water next to the motor as I'm pumping. The gas was coming out of the upper housing area. I took the top cover and the sides off of the motor without any success of finding where the leak was coming from. Has anyone had a similar experience? My motor is a 1998 Suzuki 15 Hp 4 stroke. I havn't had any problems with it until now. I bought it used about 5 years ago and the nearest place to get a Suzuki serviced is an hour away. The engine oil and filter are new, the gear oil is new and the fuel filter is new. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It def. would make sense for any left over fish to be given for a good cause somehow. When I worked for DEC I know that about half of the fish, or more, would be in bad shape to eat. We would be pulling nets in with many fish that were already dead. Any live ones we could quickly get them out of the net, take a measure and let them go. About 75% or more would be spoiled in a short time (especially pike). I worked with more warmwater fish than coldwater fish out of Lake Ontario and some adirondack lakes.

I'm excited to see that the lake is doing well. I will take all the info that I can get. While in College I worked for the DEC Fisheries in Region 6 (Watertown, Lake Ontario and Western Adks areas). I saw so many cool things while working with Fisheries over two summers. We worked quite a few weekends to specifically gain data that's being discussed in posts above. We would do "Creel Census" at specific boat launches, bodies of water and other strategic locations during weekends. There is a lot of behind the scenes work that is done by DEC employees. I don't think people give them the credit they deserve sometimes. We're lucky with all these different bodies of Water here in the Finger Lakes. There's been some 20lb. + Lakers taken in Canandaigua over the last few years. Who knows, you might be the next one to catch one that big!

Canandaigua Lake the New lake Trout Capital of New York?
troutman10 replied to JBoock's topic in Finger Lakes Discussion
I really don't feel like there is a bait problem on this lake. I've had multiple fish this year with bait in their stomachs. One was an 8 lb. brown with 14, yes 14, sawbellies in it. I've also been finding some smelt as well. -
I have a 34 lb. thrust Minn Kota Endura Trolling motor for sale. I'm asking $80 for it as it was used for one season. Item still in great shape. Will look at offers.

Has anyone been out on the ice on these lakes or heard of guys being out yet? I'm itchin to get out there after some perch. Interested to see how much ice there is.

The oddest thing you've ever had come up through the hole?

I'm third w/ a mudpuppy -
Did some ice fishing on Dec. 27th. The ice was about 5-7 inches. Caught a 20-22" walleye, a 18-20" whitefish and a bucket and a half of Perch with a buddy. Good to be out again. Was a bit windy but settled down after a while. Fished from 7:30/8 until 1. Fish taken on jigging spoons and bibbits. Minnows and eyes worked good. Quite a bit of ice melted the day after we were out, but should come back quick with the cold temps were gonna get. Can't wait to get out again. Good to be home, but I gotta find some new spots now that I've moved to the Canandaigua area. Tightlines!

I didn't make it to the show. How was it for anyone that went?

Does anyone know where I could possibly get a Canandaigua Lake that has the contours. I'm newer to the lake and think a decent map would help me out. Thanks in advance.

Sorry I'm late posting. I would fish anywhere that is rocky bottoms and shallow (10-15 ft.). The fish should be hungry and fat.

The second picture down looks like bear hair. My guess is that it's a bear. Not sure though.

FLX, Thanks for the help and invite. I saw the invite tonight (Sunday) because I've been away for the weekend. This past weekend I was able to get out and bow hunt for the Northern opener up near Watertown where I'm originally from. The line that I've been using on my pole is 12 or 15 lb. test. Is that too light for my downrigger? Is a 12 lb. ball too heavy for my small downrigger? Also, I'm unfamiliar with dipseys. What size would I need and how do I know how deep it would be running after I put it down? Thanks for the help in advance. I'm excited to figure out this lake a little better.

Sounds like you're picking it up pretty fast. Congrats. I'm new to fishing on Canandaigua. Only have one rigger (it's a Cannon mini that only goes down to about 100 if that). I have about a 6 lb. weight on it so the depth most likely varies with speed and wind. I'm afraid it's too small for fishing Canandaigua. Any input guys? I fished the other night from about 4-7 on the West side from Menteth to German Brothers 50-60 over 100. The color I was using was purple. Sounds like I should switch over to a greenish or even orange. Any feedback for my setup anyone. I would greatly appreciate it.

I picked up a used Mathews Icon for a decent price. Had it all set up last year and I love it. This will be my second year overall. The only thing that I will change on it is the rest (after this season). Right now I have a bodoodle and I'm switching to a whisker biscuit b/c I hear the blazers were made for the whisker biscuit. Maybe a little more accuracy won't hurt an already great bow...right? I recently moved to the Canandaigua area from Watertown. The work that I've had done at Bristol Outdoors has been pretty good so far. -
what kind of prices? I really like the looks of those.

I am looking to get a set up for pulling copper. Where do I start? Do people make their own? Do I buy specific things to set up? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks for help in advance.
-
Sounds like a good time. Congrats and good luck in the AM. Were you jigging, pulling copper or riggers? I'm going to try Canandaigua on Sat. and jig. I'm not sure what areas to focus on. Any help would be appreciated.

Thousand island Smallies
troutman10 replied to FISHBANDIT's topic in Musky, Tiger Musky & Pike (ESOX)
Get some crayfish and you'll be all set. Drift them along gravel and rocky bottoms. Also fish early and late in the day. The traffic waves can make things exciting if you don't already know this. You'll be sure to have some luck. -
gander mountain, your thoughts?
troutman10 replied to StormFront's topic in Musky, Tiger Musky & Pike (ESOX)
Gander Mountain is a good store, no doubt about it. I'm glad they can cater to the needs of NY sportsman b/c otherwise all we would have is Dicks and local places. Dicks is ok, but doesn't have the selection and it seems as if local places are few and far between. I would rather spend my money at a local bait shop or sporting goods store, but they are going extinct for lack of a better word. Landshark, you speak of the selection in Watertown, I guess their selection makes up for their poor customer service. I'm not sure if that goes for every Gander though. The workers don't get paid much more than min. wage like johnnywalleye said. I'll take what I can get. I'm just happy to have a store with a decent selection and I'll do the rest as far as knowing what to buy and how to use it. My .02 -

That's my uncles second cousins brother in law that caught that.... -
I would focus my energy in shallow areas because it still is fairly early in the season. I'm from the chaumont area and was fishing 10 ft and under as far as depth is concerned. Not to complain, but I'm sure we could have caught more bass except people were out fishing bass hard before the season even opened up around these parts. Too bad the DEC couldn't have been out in full force a little more. We caught a nice largemouth and some nice smallies using tubes, rapalas, senkos, etc... Also check out the TI Bait store website. It is...http://tibait.com/Reports/river.asp?area=river+report Hope that helped.
