Weathermen blow...here's your chance to voice

Hope some of you are answering the survey. This is an official National Weather Service site. They are asking for public input to their services...i.e. Nearshore Marine and Offshore Marine forecasts, boaters forecasts, and other types of recreation forecasts. MAYBE something good will come from it. -
Your complaints. Answer the survey at the following link: https://svy.cfigroup.com/cgi-bin/qwebco ... idx=3XRBCG

Perch Predator, Are you still fishing the Myers area? How deep have they moved? I'd like to take my grand kids up to try and catch a few. Years ago, I caught them south of Milliken, and across the lake from Myers, but most were less than 10". Thanks.

AT 500 AM EDT...NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE DOPPLER RADAR INDICATED AN AREA OF SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS...LOCATED ABOUT 5 MILES WEST OF HAMLIN BEACH AND MOVING EAST AT 35 KNOTS. MARINERS CAN EXPECT GUSTY WINDS...LOCALLY HIGHER WAVES...HEAVY RAIN AND LIGHTNING STRIKES AS THE STORMS MOVE BETWEEN HAMLIN BEACH AND SODUS BAY THROUGH 6 AM. BOATERS SHOULD SEEK SAFE HARBOR IMMEDIATELY UNTIL THESE STORM CLEAR THE AREA. I guess I don't see where the forecast was that atrocious. You say 20 kt winds waves 3-5 ft, forecast 10-15 kts waves 2-4 ft. Like I said, just go man, you don't need no stinkin' weather forecast. -

Just because the thunderstorms "are past you" doesn't mean they won't affect the weather in your area. Read a little bit about thunderstorm complexes. They can be 20 or 30 miles east of your location and the outflow from them can still reach your area. In this case the thunderstorms were in the southeast corner of LO and very slow moving, enhancing the easterly flow along the south shore. But hey, why do you bother looking at the forecasts if they're ALWAYS wrong? Like you said you the 30 year experience on the lake, should be a piece of cake for you to look out the window, and go. -

SODUS BAY TO THE ST LAWRENCE RIVER ALONG LAKE ONTARIO- 346 AM EDT SAT JUN 12 2010 .TODAY...EAST WINDS 10 KNOTS OR LESS INCREASING TO 5 TO 15 KNOTS. SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS. WAVES 1 FOOT OR LESS. .TONIGHT...NORTHEAST WINDS 5 TO 15 KNOTS DIMINISHING TO 10 KNOTS OR LESS. A CHANCE OF SHOWERS. WAVES 2 FEET OR LESS. .SUNDAY...NORTHEAST WINDS 10 KNOTS OR LESS BECOMING NORTH. WINDS AND WAVES HIGHER IN AND NEAR THUNDERSTORMS. What part of this forecast don't you understand???? I see one very important thing, THUNDERSTORMS. I don't care what the other elements of the forecast say. Once you have a thunderstorm complex moving into the area, all bets are off until it passes. Very often they put the remarks "wind and waves higher near thunderstorms", but for most experienced boater, that should be understood. It was issued well before you launched. The thunderstorm complex contributed to the stronger than forecast east wind. Once it passed, things calmed down again. -
I fished the south end from 5:30 til 8 pm 4/18, one small salmon. No other hits. I didn't see any chasing or other indication of a lot of fish up shallow. It was a beautiful evening to be on the water though! I did mark temps of 48-52 degrees, with the warmest in the inlet.

***Important question for Landlocked Salmon fisherman***

***Important question for Landlocked Salmon fisherman***
tiogaguy replied to tiogaguy's topic in Finger Lakes Discussion
Rob, I asked that question, the biologist seemed to think the fish would (should)have reabsorbed the eggs. I was curious about the proximity to the warm water at Milliken, but they think the fish spawn is so instinctual that water temperature "shouldn't" matter that much. I did know a little about the thiamine problem, and this may be another side effect. I guess all we can do is provide them with data, or fish, and see what comes of it. If you contact Dr. Ketola, he will forward you some studies on thiamine and salmonoids. I did ask about Brown Trout, too. The shouldn't have "viable" eggs either. Mitch -
***Important question for Landlocked Salmon fisherman***
tiogaguy replied to tiogaguy's topic in Finger Lakes Discussion
Here's why I asked the question: I caught a 20.5 inch Landlocked at Milliken Station last week that was full of eggs. I mean eggs that were spewing out of the fish, as if were ready to spawn. I called the Region 7 DEC fisheries folks and asked them if they should have eggs this time of year. They said they had never heard of such a thing, and definitely NO!. They asked me to email some pictures of the fish, which I did, after it was filleted . but the head and tail were intact. It also produced about 2 cups of eggs. They got back to me and asked if they could forward the info to the Tunison Laboratory. I received a call George Ketola, Research Physiologist and salmon asking about the specifics on when and where I caught the fish, just to make sure the info he received was correct. To make this short, Its unheard of (by biologists) for landlocks to have any eggs left after the first of the year. He asked me to inquire with other fishermen about any other catches similar to mine. If you have caught fish like this, please contact Region 7 or the lab to let them know. This may be related to the Thiamine issues the fish are having in the Finger Lakes and Great Lakes. Thanks for your replies! Mitch -
Have any of you caught a Landlocked Salmon in the past 2 or 3 weeks that still had eggs in them? I'm speaking of the Finger Lakes and especially Cayuga around Milliken Station. I mean viable eggs, as if the fish was ready to spawn. Have any of you caught LLS with eggs this time of year (late Jan, Feb, or Mar), ever? If you kept a LLS to eat, do you remember what it had in its stomach, if anything? Do most of your LLS have empty stomachs when cleaned? I'm interested in your responses, and will tell you why I interested in a couple of days. Thanks. Mitch

Do you still have the boat? I couldn't tell from the pics, does it takes an outboard? Any other structural problems? I'm interested if its an outboard and no major structural issues. Thanks. Mitch

Thanks for the info splitshot, hopefully it will hold off for a while. There's some "fluff" floating around my area (Owego). I'll try to get up one more time before the water warms too much.

Has the cotton from the cottonwood trees started to fall into the lake? I generally do morning or evening flat lining and it nearly impossible to fish if the cotton is bad. I mainly fish the south end. Any info would be appreciated.

Fished out of Wrights this morning 6:30-11:00 am, around and east of the harbor. It was the worst morning I've ever had there, 1 small salmon is all I managed for my effort. I caught it working the edge of the plumb out past the last break wall. Water temps at 46-47 with a huge area east and in the harbor of 47. Couldn't find any warm pockets and no fish (for me). I should have known something was amiss when I was the first boat in the parking lot this morning. Oh, well its always fun to watch the sun rise over the lake. Good luck to all.

Fished yesterday evening 6-8 pm. Ended up 4/4 on browns, 17-23 inches, all released. Water has cooled some with the northerly wind the past few days. It blew long enough some of the colder water mixed in, temps only 46-49. All the fish were caught in a small area of 49 degree stuff away from the inlet. All on stick baits.
