  1. FLXTroutman, Very understandable with your proximatey to Canandaigua Lake, and the gas prices. Also sounds like you have had production there. I'm glad to see that you have had the Lake Ontario experience - it's a blast! The anticipation of the screaming reels is just the beginning of the fun. This fall I will have to try the flasher/ fly set up there. Are you running it off the rigger or wire? GOOD LUCK with your 12# trifecta! LTtroller (Bob)
  2. Yankee Troller, Is that line similar to flea flicker but cheaper? Is it available locally? Can't say I have ever heard of it, nor seen it, but I am new to the game. Thanks for the input all! LTtroller (Bob)
  3. Nice reports guys! Sounds like you guys were disappointed with your catches thou. Hey, you had some action, landed some fish & at least got out on the water. Sounds like an enjoyable evening. Beats working around the house like I was doing. GOOD LUCK this weekend all. LTtroller (Bob)
  4. FLXTroutman, I have fished the north end of Canandaigua for the past 10 years or so having very good success running the meat rig (seth green set up). I have not heard of many people using a flasher/fly program there. Usually all I hear is running the meat rig or bottom fishing bait. Is it worthwhile to give it a try? Are sometimes of year better for it? I only made it there a few times this spring due to boat repair (floor/carpet/paint) that took me much longer than I anticipated, but things seem to be much slower there than normal. Do you think so too? Usually I fish Canandaigua from early April - mid June then take the summer off to hit the smallies on Ontario, then return in October & November when the Laker fishing really turns on.This year I did smallies a few times and decided it wasn't worth while with all the gobies and the smallies being much less cooperative than in years past - numbers seem down. So I turned to the Big O for salmon and I'll tell you what, it is going to be tough for me to head back to Canandaigua with the meat rig. The king fishing is unbelieveably exciting. I don't know if you fish Ontario at all, but it sounds like you are all set up for it. If Canandaigua isn't producing or if you are looking for a change of scenery, I would strongly recommend giving it a try. I am just learning the whole trolling with flashers/flies/dodger/dipsey thing, and it has been fairly easy and productive. Maybe I'll see you on the north end of Canandaigua this fall if I can pull myself away from the action on Ontario. GOOD FISHING!
  5. Yea guys I have heard very good reports about the flea flicker line, but my issue was with my wire rigs just above the dipseys. I was under the impression that the wire rigs would not have much of a problem with the fleas. I was actually getting more flea build up on the wire rigs than on the leadcore line with a dropper weight. Seemed odd to me! I did try whipping them off by slapping the tip down towards the water, but also had the concern about rod breakage. The tip in - rip out technique, seems like a good method to try. Thanks for the tips. Hope you had some luck if you got out last night GTN. I can't wait to go again myself. Fun stuff! LTtroller (Bob)
  6. Longline, I was trolling predominately N - S direction. Working the waters 110' - 150'. The few other boats I saw out there also seemed to be going the same way, although out deeper. I did venture out their way once into about 175' but didn't do anything. I hope September gets here soon, the fleas are a pain! I guess as long as I can get out on the big lake and catch a few screamers, then I can deal with the hassel of the fleas. GOOD LUCK!
  7. Went 3 for 3 on kings . 1 a teenager, 1 low 20's and "A PIG". I would guess upper 20's maybe low 30's, it measured 42" long. I guess with all the other crap I have invested into fishing, I could afford a scale. Fished in front of mouth to pump house. All fish were caught in ~140 fow, on wire rigs out 220'-240' with #2 dipsey setting. 2 kings caught on green hootchie mama w/ green crinkle fly, the other on a white pearl e-chip with mirage fly. Speed was 2.7mph on GPS. I started about 6am and had the 3 screamers boated by 7:30am. Then I couldn't manage another hit before packing it in about 10am. I'm not complaining by any means, but the way I started I was hoping for more. I marked quite a bit of fish down ~70' in 100 - 120 fow, but no takers. Wasn't marking the fish out in the 140' range, but obviously they were there, at least first thing in the morning. Whether they moved off, or I started doing something diffrently I don't know. The fleas seemed to be getting pretty bad compared to my first time out - a week ago. How long do they generally hang around? Is it gonna get worse? Well, hope this report can help someone else have an exciting morning! GOOD FISHING ALL!
  8. Legacy, Thanks for the reply. Last time (and 1st time) out I used long leads ~ 75-100' w/ dodger in front of spoon. Did one brown off that. 1 king off wire & 1 lost. I think I am headed out Tuesday AM , so I will try shorter leads & just the spoon. So much to learn and try. THANKS AGAIN!
  9. Well Gambler, looks like you had another good day! Thanks for your report. I hope to get out Monday or Tuesday and seeing these reports always gets me excited about going. GOOD FISHING TO ALL!
  10. WOW! That's some serious action. Congrats! If I could tap into your success, what sort of leads do you run off your riggers? Do you use florocarbon on your leads? Are you running dodgers in front of your spoons? Just learning. Thanks for any tips. Bob
  11. Dre, 100' depths out of Sandy are less than 2 miles out. I think I was in 130' at about 2 miles out and I was a little west of the mouth also. Very fishable water for a smaller boat and motor - just watch the weather. As for the salmon staying in the 100-200' depths, I would have to say they are going to stay at their preferred temperature range and where the bait is. I am not experienced enough with the BIG O to tell you what they might do with a change in weather patterns, so enjoy it while you can! Best to keep an eye on the board and hope the "experienced" guys keep posting to helping out us newbies. THANKS again guys. I hopt to get out again this weekend myself. Good Luck!
  12. Mornin' BT. Yes it sure is a big diffrence than the finger lakes LT's on a Seth Green rig. Never had one of them rip off 200' of line in a few seconds. I think the big lake could be addicting! Time for a bigger boat - LOL. See ya tomorrow.
  13. 1st trip to the BIG O for salmon this year, and 1st ever out of Sandy. Went 2 for 3. 1 nice king, 1 small brown & 1 screamer lost (darn son). The king, and presumed other king, both hit the wire rig w/white e-chip, white fly set up out 150' over 105fow on #3 setting. The brown came off the rigger down 70' over 80 fow on a nk28 glow frog as we were packing up about 10:15am (was getting steamy hot out there). We fished mainly from the mouth to about mid-park in mostly 100' - 130' depths. Seemed to mark lots of fish down in the 70' range but couldn't get them to hit. I'm still learning! Overall a great morning on the water - the lake was fishable for my 17 footer, the motors ran, we caught a few fish, and I wasn't at work! I just want to say thanks to all you guys that provide us newbies with great tips and info. Both Gambler & Fishinman really made Sandy sound like it would be worth my time & drive from Livonia, and it was. THANKS! GOOD FISHING ALL!
  14. I live in Livonia, but it seems like I spend a lot of time in the Rochester area. I have heard that the 3M spray adhesive works well before. I think it was about $8 a can at Lowes. I am going to try it.
  15. Fishinman, Is it Nautolex vinyl from Defenders? It looks pretty good and reasonable $ wise. I just got my epoxy so I am going to try and get the plywood floor coated this weekend, and be ready to cover it later next week. I'll keep you posted.
  16. You guys are starting to make me think twice about the carpet. I'll make up my mind this weekend, so I can hopefully get this job wrapped up before next weekend or the following one at the latest. The fish are waiting!
  17. I guess I like the idea of carpet for the feel and the footing. I just have the vision of slipping on wet vinyl. I know the vinyl would be easier to clean, but the comfort of carpet suits me better. I am currently waiting on samples from a couple marine suppliers. The one I like from Cabelas is backordered 4-5 weeks and I cant wait that long, so I am looking elsewhere. I did look at Lowes and Home Depot today and found some decent outdoor carpet w/marine backing at HD. Good color and decent price, 16oz. weight w/ 4 year warranty, but I am going to compare it with the samples when they arrive later this week (I hope). This total rehab (floor, carpet and paint) is a bigger project than I had anticipated time and $ wise. Usually I am out on Canandaigua several times by now. Its killing me. I guess I should have started in Febuary, o'well. Thanks for the input guys!
  18. Can anyone suggest a local (Rochester area) place to purchase marine carpet for a 17' boat? Any brands, styles, or tips are appreciated. Thanks!
