rochester report
Jammer replied to Waynes World's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Nice to meet you today Wayne. I was riding on my buddy Bart's boat today. Yup, that launch is a cluster cuss. Three guys in blue city of Rochester shirts standing around collecting pay checks and nobody directing traffic. It was ridiculous. Nice report. See ya out there soon! Leads off the down rigger ball
Jammer replied to Ryno23's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
Depends on time of day, light and how aggressive the fish are. First or last light, aggressive bite, go shorter. Mid day, high sun, go longer for stealth. JAM -
Mag dipsy and large dipsy on same side
Jammer replied to djw13cwru's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
Yes, Tyee has is right! I run two size 107mm wire divers on one side almost all the time. Inside (low/deep) is a 1 or 1.5 setting in rearmost holder with 8 foot rod set close to parallel to the water. Outside (shallow/high) is a 3 or 3.5 setting in forward holder with 9.5 foot rod set up one click in the holder. Works great. Be careful to set them out slow as Tyee said. JAM -

Hey Bruce, Started late because of the fog. We fished from 140 all the way out to 500. Wasted a bunch of time going out deep. There was NOTHING going on out there. Got 3 two year old (8 to 10 lb.) kings: 2 in the 140 area and one on the way out in ~240. Picked up a laker in ~190 on the way back in. So -- got a few, but it was slow. JAM -

The problem with blowing the HS board (PN 3394002) is not limited to just 15 lb weights. I ran 3 Mag 10HS riggers over a period of 2 years and blew 5 boards in that time. All three riggers blew boards and two of them only saw 12 lb weights. Although I was frustrated with the poor reliability, I like Cannon products for their ease of use, ergonomics, etc. Their customer service was good (not great) as they paid for most of the costs of repair (but not shipping). In the end, I bought 3 new Mag 10 STX which have been super reliable so far, with the only issue being the bouncing weight on the ultra fast start and stops. (Snapped off one 12 lb weight.) JAM

I got a pretty good response to the Best Spoons of 2014 post, so now I'll ask the same question for your best Flasher/Fly combos. What worked? What didn't? Any surprises? By far, my best this year was a 10" White Glow/Green Dots Spin Dr. and an A-TOM-MIK Screamer Live Series Fly. Outfished everything else on the boat, all season long. JAM

what brand 30 lb wire 1000 ft, how far back floacarbin
Jammer replied to fisherman 57's topic in Tackle and Techniques
"Vanish" is what the fish and the lure that just got bit do when they crack you off with that crap. "Vanish" is also what the rest of the package of that crap does when you throw it in the lake after cracking off a couple fish. Like Sk8man says, go with Seagaur. JAM -
I had the same issue as Broadhorizons on my CW-303. The Coldwater drags are just plain weird, making it very hard to use them for wire dispies. It is pretty much impossible to find that edge just before it starts creeping out. I bought a dragmasters updgrade from Tuna Toms which I will put in this winter and try next year. We'll see... Also, the reset on the line counter is now not working correctly. It resets OK, but I have to manually pull the reset button back up or the counter will stay on 000 when you start feeding line out. That's pretty annoying. Bottom line, my opinion is that the Convectors are a better use of your $. I have four Convectors in the 30 and 45 sizes and they have been flawless. The Clarions are excellent too, but Okuma appararently stopped making those... JAM

I put 3 new Mag 10 STX on the boat this year. They are definitely very fast and do indeed start and stop so fast that the weight bounces. I had one snap off a 12 lb ball when I was ticking it down a couple times to drop the weight a few feet. It broke off the new cable that came with the rigger. Maybe there was a little kink, not sure, but the reason for the break off was most certainly due to the jerky starts and stops. Cannon knows about this, and their answer is that the Digitroll models ($500 more than the STX) have soft start and stop. Having said all that, the riggers are fine and certainly get the job done in a hurry, even with 15 lb Sharks. JAM

Great read on how Salmon were introduced into Lake Michigan
Jammer replied to Yankee Troller's topic in Open Lake Discussion
Thanks Rick! Here's another one with a good lesson: http://www.mlive.com/outdoors/index.ssf/2011/04/collapse_of_lake_huron_salmon.html JAM Whoops -- Sorry, Sk8man beat me to it! -
Well, this certainly was a "different" year for Salmon fishing in the big O! Admittedly, every year is different, but 2014 felt "more different" than most. Seemed to me (and most of the guys I talked to this year) that the kings often weren't in their usual places. For whatever the reason(s), from cold cold Lake Erie water in the west end this spring, to constantly shifting winds all summer, it was tough to find those kings and keep them going a lot of the time! Nonetheless, when we did find em, there were (as always) some spoons that were better than others this year. My best were: Moonshine Crabface (both reg and mag) Carlson Black/glow (reg) Stingray Glow Wonderbread Less action with greens than normal here. What worked best for you? JAM
