New PureBred Muskie Lake
BP Swing replied to mostlymuskies's topic in Musky, Tiger Musky & Pike (ESOX)
good point about it maybe being a tiger from Cross L, thats not that far. Isnt there alot of dams/locks on the oswego river that would make it impassable for a pure from the lake? -

I guess it's possible technically for one to come in through the erie canal but it would have to swim from Lake Erie. Where else are purebreds connected to the canal? That is a first for me in almost 50 years of fishing local waters of hearing a musky (pure) come from Seneca. I guess anything is possible but many casual anglers do mistake pike for muskies which is why the DEC has signs all over musky waters making sure people can see the difference. -

From my informal research there were very few caught in the central basin (Rochester area) in the recent past. Rumors here and there but not many confirmed catches even by accident. Doubtful anyone targets them in that area. I have spoken to DEC biologists and never any reports of central basin catches. Had a thread on here for years and again no confirmed catches other than 1 or 2 to my recollection. I will try to find the thread if its still here. And muskies in Seneca? You are definitely mistaken. Not a purebred anyways without photo proof. Here is the thread from 2007 on up. 3 pages viewtopic.php?t=2957 -
New PureBred Muskie Lake

Larry, Forget Seneca cause it has Trout in it and stocked trout as well. Once the DEC hears the word "trout", everything else takes back seat. They are so obsessed with stocking trout instead of walleye, muskies, etc. in the area lakes. Not sure if the muskies would mess up the jumbo Perch population either but seriously Conesus is ideal. They already stock tigers, theres no Trout, and just a perfect warmwater lake for them. Theyd have some competition from the huge Pike though. Where do I sign? -
I was there on Tues and they were still there but as soon as the docks are gone, forget it. The water is so low, you'll mangle your boat. I usually do what old man said too and go anyways without the docks but I think it is just too low this year. Did manage a nice fat 38"er though. Darn.
-
Old Man, That could be the best use of our tax money we will see in NY no doubt. Not surprised the Pike turned on when it got windy. Pike like wind. I bet the barometer was just right on that day. Congrats.

Anyone catch this in the paper yesterday?
BP Swing replied to JOE ESOX's topic in Musky, Tiger Musky & Pike (ESOX)
Yeah sad thing is no one would be able to tell the difference between a skin mount and a reproduction. Plus the repo lasts a lifetime. I agree with old man - 60" limit statewide. Youd think DEC would of made special regs after the vhs wiped out half the population in 05 for the St. Larry. Stupid move. Should be mandatory catch and release, period. -
Thanks guys for the support. I keep having flashbacks about this but it was happening so fast and I was so rattled Im afraid I screwed up not getting a better description. I remember the passenger was looking out the back and I think the inside of the boat was all white (no carpet). He looked surprised when he saw me and was pointing at me as he yelled to his driver friend as they passed. The boat was 21-25 foot I think closer to 25 ish and I remember seeing a white boat with maroon but honestly dont know if it was the top, the trim, or the bottom. White and maroon, 25 foot + or -, white interior without carpet. Thats about all I can remember, had too much to worry about at the time like trying to get his attention and then getting out of the way. Im lucky to be here.

I was in 100 feet in a white/blue trim Sylvan.

I nearly bought the farm today...... I was trolling at Oak Orchard straight out around 4 PM by myself in my 16 foot Sylvan. I had 2 lines out and was trolling with my 5 HP Honda kicker. There were 2 or 3 boats way out but almost no boats nearby. I see this boat come out of the harbor and head straight for me from a distance. Im trolling west. The boat gets closer and closer and Im thinking it's a long way off still, he'll see me. He keeps coming at full speed. The boat is maybe a 21-25 foot cuddy. OK still plenty of time to turn off. He keeps coming. Now I'm starting to get nervous a little, he's coming at full speed and maybe 50 yards away. I stand up and start waving for him to see me but he keeps coming. Sh&* this jerk is not stopping hes heading right at me broadside 25 yards away. I open up the 5 horse but that can only go so fast, I had my 30 HP up out of the water, no time for that. I thought I was a goner, I really did. I considered jumping overboard before he hit me. I didnt know what to do. Now hes 10 yards away and still at full speed. the kicker is wide open trying to get out of his path. I'm a goner..Now I know why I go to church every sunday...at the last possible minute with me waving and yelling this a^&hole turns away behind me so close his wake came over my downrigger rod maybe 10 feet away at full steam. He passes me and Im shaking like a leaf throwing him the bird, etc. This jerk keeps going way out almost out of sight and it's too rough for me to follow him in this boat. If anyone knows of a 21-25 foot fishing boat white with I think a maroon or red trim/bottom that was fishing at the Oak that came out around 4 PM on 7/28/11 Thurs., please PM me as the Orleans County Sheriff and Coast Guard would like to have a little chat with him. There was the driver and 1 other person in the back. My day was over at that point and now I remember how little concern/respect/caring some of the big boats have here for the smaller boats, huge wakes and incidents like this. The Sheriff said the marine patrol had just ended their shift at 4 PM so whoever this SOB is.... is real lucky. Keep a watchful eye and be safe. Any help appreciated. Thanks BP

Rule of Thumbs for Trout/Salmon weights
BP Swing replied to BP Swing's topic in Open Lake Discussion
OK thanks for the charts but I was wondering from 1st hand knowledge. Somebody out there knows how much a 35 inch salmon weighs or a 40" salmon or a 35" steel, etc. Anyone? -
Are there any basic rules of thumb for Lake O. trout and Salmon weights if you know the length (and girth sometimes)? I know there are variables depending how fat the fish is, time of year, etc. In other words how much would a 38.5" x 25"girth King weigh? I got 1 that size yesterday and it broke my scale right in front of me. I'm not sure how accurate online weight calculations are so I'd rather see what any Lake O charter guys or experts think. Also for Steelhead how much does a 30" weigh? or any other general lengths of T/S? If there were some general rules of thumb, it's a whole lot easier measuring fish that weighing them. Thanks P.S I'll have a new scale out there next time anyways.

Does the top hole or bottom hole (back) work better generally speaking? If you were limited to 2 or 3 colors...what color spin Doctor and Fly would they be for Lake O ? Is it safe to say that generally speaking...Spin Doctors take more fish than 8" flashers or not? After almost 50 years of bass, walleye, pike, musky, etc. this attractor thing is brand new to me. Ive been reading up but was wondering any opinions out there. I'm all ears. Thanks Bob

Thanks Gene. Never thought of that. Whew!

Making the most of a two rod spread??
BP Swing replied to MarkNY's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
I had the pleasure of fishing solo the other day and having both rods go off at once with Salmon. One got off and I landed the other 17 lbs or so. Like a Chinese fire drill. I was using a free sliding cheater and got lots of hits on the free slider. I guess it goes about 50-75% down to where the ball is. I was marking my cheater with my HDS5 and I had 40 feet out on the ball and the cheater was about 30 sliding down. I'd like to try the fixed cheater option but I need things real simple out there being alone. I may give it a whirl if its calm. Good stuff guys thanks. -
I used the knot but now I'm wondering if I should of tried the super line cabelas is selling for it instead of cable as it tracks straight down and doesn't hum like cable does. Hmmm..
-
Anyone on Lake O have a general color preference? Im thinking black too.
-
Thanks guys, I'm gonna use the knot instead of crimpers. Nice video.
-
Is that the same wire knot like for wire fishing line?
-
I cant seem to get these things to fire very often. Ive been using the 30 foot model and was wondering if the amount of line makes a difference or will it always be at 30 feet? When they say "dives to 30", how much line are they assuming you have out? I know my silver one sucks, does anyone have a color that works? Thanks
-
Does anyone know how I can attach the cable to the swivel at the ball? I know it takes some kind of crimps but I have no clue what kind and where to get them. I had a little incident today where I need to reattach the cable to the ball swivel. I messed up the first 10-15 feet near the ball. Thanks
-
Ive got the hds5 and it marks the ball real clear. I have it on the 83 mz wide setting and it rocks. It even marks the cheater spoon.
-
Problem is if you are relying on politicians to fix the problem...I doubt it will happen as most of them are downstate and probably dont even know what a fishing rod looks like much less fish or care about upstate fishermen. Looks like we are going to get the shaft, don't buy the license next year and hit em where it hurts, their pocketbook.
-
Speaking only for myself, I can say I'm done with Canada. I have fished almost 50 years and have bought Canadian licenses many many times. The license goes up every year, the outdoor card, the hassles at the border for our annual Ontario fly in trips and other trips, etc. Who needs that Sh&%. I fish for relaxation and because its my passion. I dont need my blood pressure going up with the constant hassles and wondering if we are gonna get borded or checked. Screw it! We have so much good fishing right here in the USA, theres no need to give them anymore money for licenses or motels or gas or food. They lose, not us. I only hope we offer them the same courtesy as they fish our waters. By the time they get this straightened out, if they do, the season will be over anyway. Once they see their non resident license sales drop next year, they will rethink it. They are shooting themselves in the foot for sure. Guess I will have to watch the GPS more on the Niagara and stay on our side. Adios canada.
