  1. Pretty close, but seemed more compressed, and a rounded tail... Could be that decomposition had some effect on how the fish looked as well.. Its not a big deal, I was just curious... bob
  2. Been fishing Cayuga for 29 years, and am totally unfamiliar with the small fish i found in a brown I cleaned yesterday.. there were 5 or 6 of them, in varying stages of decomposition.. The heads were more digested than the bodies, so it was hard for me to get a look at the heads/faces... They were about 5 inches long, and silvery like a sawbelly.,,, However, they were elongated like an eel.. Not round like an eel or a lamprey, they were vertically compressed like a sawbelly, but elongated like an eel. Think of an eel like bait fish, but silvery ,compressed, and the had some dark lines/markings as well.. A few thin lines, not real dark running lengthwise along the body.. They were not Gobies, seen a million of those, certainly not alewives or smelt,,, They must be schooling fish such as an alewife however as this brown was packed with them, all siilvery long, thin and vertically compressed, with some markings... This computer not set up for pictures right now, so could not take any pics... any ideas???.. I would recognize a picture of them... Oh yeah, tail fin was quite rounded from what I could tell, not forked.... . bob
  3. Better clarity as you went north.. Also less muddy on the eastern shoreline than it was mid lake at the same depth... Is the state going to leave those hazards in the inlet I wonder.. A few looked like they can clean a lower unit off with one hit... bob
  4. Got out for a late afternoon into evening session.. Morning bite might have been much better... Inlet is an absolute mess... Had to dodge submerged logs, and horrific looking wood junk thats actually imbedded in the bottom, and is just at or below the surface right at prop level... Thats not to mention the half submerged floating logs.. South end was a mess with the north wind, and water was very muddy... got nothing first few hours flat lining stick baits... Started casting and nailed a very nice brown... A real basketball. only 21 inches long yet it was 6 pounds!.. Hit a metal blade bait that I normally use for jigging deep water lakers... Had another casting the same lure, but it got off.... Late in the day after 7 PM started trolling again back toward the inlet in the mud, and had a good fish hit on a Jointed silver/black Rapala.. Came unpinned after a short battle,,, So not really great fishing, but did manage one good fish... Water still cold as hell.. best I could manage was 44 near shore in say 13 feet and under, and 42 closer to mid lake where the water is 20- 25 feet deep on the south end,, This was after having the whole afternoon to"warm up"... I have never seen the water this cold in mid May... Others may have... Got out at pre dawn this morning trying for a walleye or two in the susquehanna,, but no soap... Water is ice cold there as well.. Did get 2 SMB but they were obviously really slow and lethargic.. Barely could feel the hit,, very slow sluggish battle, and no leaping that river smallies are famous for....Other guys do very well in muddy ice water, but personally I don't, and I prefer flat line trolling when the water is closer to 50 and a little clearer,, Still, can't complain, didn't get skunked... bob O
  5. agreed... plus its outdoors, not an enclosed space... these guys need to open their businesses up or they won't have a business
  6. The fishing stated in the ""new normal"" we are dealing with means commercial fishing, mostly restricted to the ocean and salt water tidal estuaries... I doubt it includes charters and guides yet, but that might be coming soon... Maybe.... We either let the economy deteriorate until we are in a monstrous depression, or we resume normalcy and take precautions... The vaccine thats being touted will not be a panacea,,,, Coronaviruses have been known for many decades and vaccines have not been well developed for them as yet... Many common colds are coronavirus strains, and we haven't figured them out thus far... bob
  7. that looks like blue skis and flat water in the background.. Every time I look outside all I see is howling wind, sideways rain, snow or all the above.. guess you got out during a good window..Nice laker btw,,, ....
  8. They spread out as the water warms.. I catch perch all summer.. Some nice ones too,... Not huge numbers like in the spring, but they are around, and typically, there are other fat panfish mixed in as well... Big Bluegills, Pumpkinseeds, Rock bass are all good eating as well, and when that stuff is avaulable, there are always some perch mixed with them... The south end of the lake has some good panfishing in late spring/early summer, but that fishery develops long after the north end f perch ishing... bob
  9. well, if there are 60 boats fishing that small area on a day to day basis, you won't have long to wait for the fishing to "slow down"... Perch are just as vulnerable to over harvest as any other species,,,,,, bob
  10. Runs fine at planing/high speed.. Very strong at high speed actually..Idles poorly, and sneezes at idle and low speed. I think its a vacuum leak, possibly lower crank seal... Replaced upper crank seal and it seemed to get worse.. Was a bit rough and sneezy at low speed but was perfectly usable.. even trolled with it a few weeks ago... Replaced the upper seal, hoping it would help the rough idle,, but its worse... Still strong at cruising speed, but I have had it, done replacing parts and am simply going to replace it... It needs someone thats better aquainted with 2 strokes than I am.. Compression is even on both cyls at about 110 psi, new water pump, pumps plenty strong, new plugs, new valve for prime solenoid,, new fuel pump, solid and quiet lower unit- oil is clean and has no water in it.. Motor was running pretty good at low speed a few weeks ago, until I changed the upper seal, and I should have left it alone. I might have dinged it when I installed it...Its a quick easy job actually, but I am no longer interested... $150 FIRM! takes it away.... If I get a motor with controls, I will include them, but I may need them, not sure as yet... Motor can be started and run for the next few days, until I find another motor and remove this one... If nothing else, its a very good parts engine, but as I said, I think its just a seal leaking vacuum, or possibly a leaky reed... btw, this is an electric start/remote steer motor...bob
  11. The local governments welcome squealers as well, never forget that... Its happening everywhere... People ratting out their neighbors in the name of ""public safety"".. Also, NEVER under any circumstances think that local, county, state police or military/government officials are on your side. They will always follow orders, no matter how unjust, and will arrest you have you thrown in jail if thats the "prescribed penalty" for your "offense", and go home to their own families without a second thought... I know some here will think I'm a conspiracy theory kook, but in world history, millions upon millions of innocent citizens of nations around the world have been imprisoned, tortured or murdered by state /local ""servants"" that were "just doing their job".."only following orders"etc... We have NOT changed that much. Modern society is based on a very thin veneer of normalcy... Things I have seen in the past few weeks have hit me hard, Understand that personal freedom is what the government tells you it is,, NOT what we as individuals think it should be.. Indeed, that veneer of civilization is very fragile indeed.... bob
  12. Launch for Susquehanna River at Hickories Park in Owego closed.. Yer the damn Park is OPEN.. Except for bathrooms, tables, campsites of course,, Yet you can walk anywhere , walk your dogs at the dog walk area, where there were bunch of people... Thats a county park... A mile or 2 upriver, the town launch s closed.. In 30 years, never saw more than 2 trailers at this launch,,SO stupid... State maintained launch at Barton is open, as well as one in Apalachin... Makes NO sense,.. These are all just concrete slab launches, NO docks, no bathrooms close by, unimproved except for the launch area, and grass or gravel unmarked parking... Even in mid summer, you can launch without getting with 50 feet of another human being,, This time of year?.. 200- 300 feet NO problem. This sort of lunacy helps no one... Its all about control, and usurping of individual rights and freedom... bob
  13. Gizzard Shad-. they make SPECTACULAR cut bait... Browns, rainbows. lakers will swallow them with abandon right on the bottom, if they see it.. BIG Catfish , bullheads, and stripers too, in lakes where they exist.. They stink when cut, but the scent draws predators, and they hit chunks readily bob
  14. Report post Posted 12 hours ago (edited) Wow. The walleye is an illegally introduced species to one of the last true cold water trout fishery lakes in New York State. The walleye was illegally introduced by short sighted bucket biologists...and an ignorant particular “guide”. They wanted fish that are easy to catch and good eating in the lake. A few well known (and one deceased) Homer locals did most of the illegal stocking. These individuals took the hard work of fisheries biologists, those tasked with the management of the lake, and pissed on it. Skaneateles Lake is a trout lake. Always will be. It is unique. And with restoration and management of the invasive vermin walleye, as the state is proceeding... The trout fishery will continue to dominate as we who live here expect it to. Thats what local, law abiding sportsmen and women overwhelmingly show support for. Walleye is vermin in Skaneateles Lake, and anyone supporting or positive of the walleye existence in Skaneateles Lake is either not from around here, is a misguided meat fisherman, or is a one of the illegal walleye stockers... or perhaps a bs guide guilty of introducing this fish in the first place for cash gain Oh Brother.. Do you and the other ""locals"" OWN this lake?.. Yeah, i thought not. Rainbows, Browns, LL Salmon are also "invasives" by your logic.. they are NOT native to Skaneatles.. Only lake Trout are.. Matter of fact the Walleye can and will spawn in the lake itself as well as feeder streams, so they are better suited to the lake than your precious trout. I realize what this forum is .. Its 90% fishermen that deep troll for trout almost exclusively.. thats fine if thats what you like.. There are some here, in the small minority that have no interest in that type of fishing, and LOVE the thought of a viable, or even productive walleye fishery in skaneateles.. Any fish that needs to be stocked yearly to simply exist should be phased out in my opinion, and fish that can reproduce naturally should get preference in management.. Maybe you can petition the NY state DEC, and they can poison the lake, and then fill it back up with rainbows only ... bob
  15. Minn Kota Weedless Wedge prop, brand new never used still in original package. Fits-- All Terrain/Camo/Endura/Endura max/Endura Pro/Maxxum transom/Powerdrive/Traxxis/Edge.. $10 takes it... bob PM here or email [email protected]
  16. put them on wood if possible, although the black top won't really hurt them. Worst case they get a temporary "flat spot" that goes away after driving on them a few miles when the weather warms up in spring. . Best idea for ANY trailer is to simply cover the tires, keeping the sunlight off of them.. The ultra violet radiation from the sun , as well as ozone causes the "dry rot" cracking that occurs in trailer tires,, There are other factors as well, but they are the big ones.. Keep the tires covered up when not in use and they will last a LOT longer... Some circular plywood cut outs, or even just a couple proper size pieces of cardboard will work fine. bob
  17. Just wondering if its even worthwhile these days.. I used to have spectacular laker jigging at this time of year in the Bluff area years ago, but it fell off drastically in that area past several years.. Is it worth a trip anymore, or should I concentrate further north, along points etc?... Not needing specifics really, just wondering if there are fishable numbers of lakers left in those deep flats around the Bluffs... bob
  18. Furuno is the unit that all the party boat/.charter boat captains in NJ used for years and years.. Very dependable commercial grade equipment that lasts.. My Garmin 250 C is a nice color unit, 500 watts RMS and was all I needed.. Problem is even though it was lightly used and well taken care of, it crapped out for no apparent reason after a few seasons use.. Had to send it back to garmin, they rebuilt it for a good deal of money, it lasted another season, needed work again, and they no longer support that unit so now its junk.. I like Garmin when it works.. Good performance at a reasonable price, but they seem a lot more interested in selling new equipment as opposed to keeping their older stuff working for its owners.. bob
  19. I dunno, does anyone really need more meat?.. Is it that important?. Finger Lakes trout and salmon are typically good size fish, and 1 decent bow along with a brown, landlock, laker here and there is more than enough for a few meals, unless you are feeding a big family. I mean if having more fish flesh on the table is imperative, there are lots of other possibilities. panfish, bass, pike, walleyes etc.. the rainbows can spawn and reproduce why start grabbing up more to fillet or smoke?.. bob
  20. They might be keying on an abundant food source in the lake and not much interested in any other offerings.. next time out, bring along some plain old earthworms.. Everyone uses minnows or small plastic jigs for them these days, but nothing beats plain old worms for perch, shallow or deep.. Worms have saved a lot of trips for me when everything else failed. If using jigs try a little piece of worm on it.. bob
  21. Here's the formula- "Boat weight is the most important consideration to take into account when choosing a trolling motor. A beginning rule of thumb is that you want a minimum of 2 lbs of thrust for every 100lbs. For example, if you have a 3000lb boat, fully loaded, then the calculation is (3000/100) * 2 = 60lbs of thrust. When calculating boat weight, make sure you calculate the heaviest potential weight which includes a boat fully loaded with gear, fuel and the maximum number of passengers". I suppose it depends on what you are doing... If you are in heavy seas with the 40 mph wind blowing you away from your launch area you are in trouble.. The electric troller is better than nothing but not much.. Calm water it will be ok, until the batteries go dead.. I only have a 17 footer but I feel very secure with a little 4 HP 2 stroke or even my 2 hp 2 stroke.. thats how I would go, and they are really cheap in the off season $225-275 will get you a decent used 2-3-4 HP gas 2 stroke that would be way better than the electric.. You might only make 1-2 knots in the wind, but it will push you against a strong wind... The electric?.. Not so sure, even thoughyou are well within the weight guidelines.. Electrics are for changing position in small areas while fishing, and holding position against the wind in a boat that size... The excel at that.. They aren't really meant to push a heavy boat with a dead main engine 5 miles back to the ramp in heavy wind.. The small gas motor will do it quite slowly, but it will do it... Ask me how I know!.... bob

  23. I would never consider entering ANY tournament, for any fish.. ever. However, and awful lot of guys love them, and fish everyone they can.. PILES of dead bass, BIg dead bass, floating or lying motionless on bottom, near the weigh in/release area.. Happens at every bass tournament, yet each year, they are bigger and bigger with more guys entering I feel the same way about Trout/walleye/Catfish/Perch tourneys, not to mention Tuna/Striper/Fluke/ Marlin /Swords in salt water.. As the late great fishing author Frank woolner once wrote.. "Fishing should not be a competitive sport-It should be a contemplative sport".. I concur 100% .... bob
  24. Understood.. No argument but remember, every spring fall and even into winter, guys troll the south end of the lake with flatlines and planers, and keep and eat what they catch.. They troll so close to the sewage treatment outflow, they could hit it with a cast.. bob
