  7. Smith Boys at the river can get you a new one for around $5000-7000
  8. On the water at 6ish. Made 1 pass inside with the usual sticks, no decent temp anywhere. Moved out deeper- started marking fish in the 40-80 fow range. Best marks were at 70 fow- so we tried many different set-ups until we finally hit a fish. 42 down over 70 fow- silver streak mag- 39.5 degree water. Weighed in at 16.11. Fished for another 1.5 hours without a release- back home around 9:30 AM
  9. within 100 feet of the mouth- there was good color in the water. Everywhere else it was gin clear. When we went out to 40 fow, the south wind was causing the top of the water column to move north, the bottom 25 feet was 39 degree water moving south. All that cold water from out deep has no color in it at all.
  10. after a windy night, we decided to try it this AM. Hit the water at 6:15 AM, wind out of the south, 1-3 footers. Set up in front with the usual spring package. Caught 1 coho in 11 fow; then fished for 2 hours without anything. Worked inside, worked outside- water temp 40-41 degrees everywhere except in the mouth of the creek. Called it quits, on the way in the creek, I left 1 rapala out behind the boat. Hooked up with a nice brown- just under 9 lbs as we were going by the BYC. He was a solid 100 yards in the creek when he hit. Landed him while passing the public launch.

  12. OK my turn. I decide to buy a new shotgun at the end of hunting season. Finally decide on the Winchester SX3- knowing I will spend about $1000. Call Gander, they do not have it in stock but will get it from another store. Guy also tells me they will take my current gun in on trade and give me 75% of the book value towards the new gun. I look up the book value- between $300-425 so off to Gander in Henrietta I go with my gun. When I get there, I have the pleasure of dealing with the woman who is the manager of the firearms department. She starts off by asking me how much I want to get for my used gun. I reply, 75% of the book value- like I was told on the phone. She explains that is only a "guidline" and not a policy. I tell her that I am buying a $1000 gun from the store and I want 75% of the book value for my old gun- around $300-$350. She offers $175. We argue for 15 minutes until I ask for the store manager. Finally, after about 1/2 hour, I am offered $325. I buy the new gun, and my receipt is about $75 more then I thought I was paying. I ask to see the itemized bill and guess what- she made a mistake when ringing it up. She also "forgot" to give me my $25 gift card that was part of a promotion. OH- and the kicker- when I picked up my new gun- I found my old gun on the used rack for $525 I WILL NEVER SET FOOT IN THAT STORE AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! for anything!!
  13. my wife and kids will be happy that there is a month between each derby
  14. I have had the same exoeriences. Purchased a new probe in August and used it for the fall derby. It tracks great and was compatable with my current 840 head unit. The new head unit has a much larger display- hopefully I will be able to purchase that as well for this upcoming season
  15. boxing match nothing- his knuckles are all skinned up from dragging on the ground when he walks. Jeff- Auggie is coming over to my house tonight to buy it- call me when you get a chance
  16. Rob- that is where he went for the Mathews. Foster
  17. you want to run your j-plugs at about 3 mph. I run swivels with mine- some people do not. You can not run flashers or meat at that spped- stick to J-Plugs and mag spoons at the same time. FYI- during the fall derby, we took between 10-15 big kings on silver bullet j-plugs at 3.2 MPH- even running them as deep as 120 down over 115 FOW
  18. I have been doing some searching on-line and I came accross some Canadian derby's with unbelievable prizes. First place $40,000 in cash and prizes, 2nd place $30,000 in cash and prizes......... It seems as though they have great corporate sponsership- why do we only have the LOC? The grand LOC prize is less then 5th place of these others
  19. Got in a few hours early this AM. Very foggy- due to the extremly low water temp. Had 59 degrees on the surface. Set up and worked the 40 to 60 FOW area. Ended up 2 for 2; one teenage king and one nice 8 lb domestic rainbow. Both fish hit white/silver meat rig- 60 down over 60 FOW. Had 51-54 degrees at the probe. After the fog lifted, I could see boats working anywhere from 10 FOW out the 300-400 FOW. I think it is going to be a difficult few days of fishing. Good luck with the rest of the LOC
  20. bump-
  21. Thanks guys- my father is very proud of it. I think it is the biggest male he has caught since the mid 1980s. We were only in 60 FOW when it hit- first run went out 400, next was just over 300. Then it went to the bottom and did not move- so we just circled it for the next 20 minutes until he got it at the boat. In all honesty- I did not clear any other rods while he was fighting it. The rod tip was vibrating back and forth so we just thought he was hooked in the gill plate or below the jaw. We were busting his chops the entire time about screwing around with the fish and waisting quality time by having to circle the boat. We just figured it was another 20 lb fish that was slightly foul hooked. Turned out the vibration was from the lure being bent in half across it's mouth.
  22. Gene- thanks! My father caught it. I just hope it is on the board by the end of the derby. We went out tonight and caught one that was 25.11 and two steelhead. Fihing has been great recently Are you going out this weekend?
  23. Hit the water at 5:30 with my father and an old friend. Great temp in shallow. Pulled a double right away- both kings 19 and 21 lbs. About 45 minutes later- we had a great release on the deep rigger- ended up being a huge male- in the picture; 32.6 officially. Fished for another hour- cathching a 18 lb king and breaking off another. Home by 10:00 Good luck to all!
  24. Went out last night for a quick trip. Stopped in 90 FOW- had 71 on the surface- dropped the probe and had 70 on the bottom. Made the run out to 420 and set up on a north troll. Hit 470 fow and took a great rip on a slid diver- out 333 feet 2.5 setting. 42 second spin dr/fly combo. Fought the fish for about 20 minutes and had it get off 75 feet behind the boat. Fleas were bad and got stuck on the pully- line slacked up- fish was gone. Set back up- got into 490 FOW and caught a king on a mag green NK with a glow ladderback/copper cup. 70 down. Down temp was 42 degrees with 90 feet of cable out. Good luck to everyone this week- looks like the weather is supposed to be crap again this weekend!
  25. We had the same situation about 6 years ago. The only way to consistanly catch good kings was to make the run out deep where the water was stable. Now- with gas prices on the water at $5 per gallon- it is an expensive quessing game. I saw on At the Oak the Bucaroo caught a 31 lb king yesturday- so the big guys are out there. We won the Orleans Derby last year with a fish that was only 30 lbs and change. There is somthing to be said about being in the right place at the right time. So far this summer, I do not think we have had 2 consecutive days of similar wind conditions. The temp and currents have been terrible- the lake never really had a chance to "set up". It will make for a VERY interesting Orleans Derby and Fall LOC derby
