  1. Went out for a quick trip with my father and my 5 year old son. Left the dock at 5 PM- ran out to 100 FOW. Had really bad temp so we decided to troll north. At 140 FOW- hit a nice 20 LB king down 70. It was our deep rigger- running in 41 degree water. Home by 6:15 PM When I say we had bad temp- it was 68 degrees down 55 feet, and 44 degrees down 60 feet. Huge temp break- but so tight in the water column- it was impossible to get more then 1 rigger in the zone. We marked lots of fish laying on the bottom- from 120 out to 145 FOW. This was the first trip for the 5 year old for anything other then bass. Hopefully it did the trick and has him hooked for life.
  2. I think it would allow more teams to fish- at least from the AM division. Most of us do not have to work for a few days after the forth
  3. I run 17 lb all year. In the fall, just have to make suire the drags are not too tight and there are no nicks in the line. Every fish I have broken off has actually been the leader between the flasher and the fly or on the wire.- never the main 17lb line
  4. Scott We have been finding the same pattern these last few weeks. Funny when steelies are hitting deeper then the kings Foster
  5. Catch and release for every fish- except when it will make the leaderboard for the derby. About once a year, I will keep fish, fillet, and give away to family and friends. From my expereinces at the 3 marinas and docks along the creek, I think the VAST majority of boats (that dock) on the creek are all catch and release. I do not know about those that use the public launch.
  6. no knot- CRIMPS!!! Knots will always break- it is just a matter of time
  7. Does that mean there is a "free" probe on the bottom off of Sandy??
  8. The current off of Sandy has been really crazy. Do you have a down speed unit? When we were out the other day, on an east troll, I had to bump my speed to 4 mph on the surface to get 2.3 mph on the probe. We hit fish within minutes of bumping the speed up on the east troll.
  9. Went out tonight from 5-8 PM. Flees were TERRIBLE. Lots of hits- but hard to hook up. Ended up 4 for 13. One large king about 25 lbs, 2 small kings and a hog brown around 10 lbs. Fished 70-140 FOW usually rigs worked best- green was hot. Lost 2 really nice fish- both on the wire- out 255- 3 setting. Good luck!
  10. The Ortho Home Defense works GREAT. I have been using it for 3 years on the boat. NO SPIDERS
  11. I put it on every lure- everytime one goes out. I also put it on my flashers- but not on the flies. It can be heavy and has alot of oils that will mess up the flies action in the water.
  12. This has been a topic I have been following for a few years. I think everyone's experiences are different, however I really feel like a change in weather conditions has a very positive impact on fishing. Some of the best days I have had on the water- have been "difficult" to fish due to poor weather. During the fall derby and so far this summer- a change in weather has been GREAT fishing for trout and salmon. The trick is to find the active fish. We went 4 for 5 on big kings last night ranging 16-24 Lbs- all were caught 55-70 degree water due to warm water being pushed against the shore in less the 200 FOW. Our fish were down 75-105 feet. As I said- the trick is to FIND them!!
  13. Sandy is about the same as the Oak for depth of water. 100 FOW is less then 1 mile off-shore. In the last 3 years, there have been very, very few times I have had to go deeper then 160 fow to find fish
  14. I have 4 manual penns- long-arms with the swival bases. 2 of them are working great- the other 2- not so much. All 4 have the single rod holder mounted on them. Let me know if you want to take a look at them- located in Hamlin
  15. The fishing has been great. Between yesturday and today- we had over 30 releases- boating 21 fish. My problem is that the biggest was only about 17 lbs. Both days we were back at the dock by 10:00 AM. Evyerthing has been in 70-120 FOW and on white and/or green I am glad that Sandy is finally having a good showing on the leader board. Good luck to all.
  16. While on the water this AM, one of my new high speed mag10s stopped working. Came back to the house and started making hone calls.I found a guy that is a certified cannon repair shop in Orchard Park. I had the rigger to his house at 7:00 PM and by 9:00 PM I was home with it fixed- a new ciruit board- covered by warrenty. He works on all brands of downriggers and Minn Kota trolling motors. Tony's reel and downrigger repair 716-662-5692 Really great experience and helped me out in a jam-I will be fishing again at 5:00AM tomorrow.
  17. I really like the new boat Bandit- I thought I saw you come out this AM. We were just east of port- 100-125 FOW, 81 and 71 down- no real color pattern. I think the key is more trolling speed and down temp then color. We caught fish on white/green, purple, and yellow/pink both spoons and flashers; flies and meat. Will be out again in the AM, I think the temp has finally set up- alothough the south wind today may move it out deeper.
  18. Went out this AM for a quick trip before wrok. Left the dock at 5 am- fished until 7 am. Ended up 6 for 7- mixed bag of kings, browns, and steelies. Biggest was just under 20 lbs; still nasty current out there. Good luck to all!
  19. We went out this AM for a QUICK trip before work. Hit the dock at 5 AM, fishing at 5:15- first fish at 5:16. 7lb steelhead- 35 down over 80 fow. Set back up, 20 minutes later we hit a 16 lb king- 45 down over 75 fow. Fished until 6:45 AM then went to work. The wind is blowing out of the northeast- we had 42 degrees on the probe- 60 down over 80 fow. We never went any deeper then 100- marked a ton of bait between 60-80. Good luck to all!!
  20. Been fishing the lake for almost 25 year. We have used Penn's, Big Johns, and Cannon. By far- the Cannons have been the best. I just bought 2 of the new Mag 10 high speed with the 60" booms. They are really nice and very fast. With the double rod holders, and swivel bases, my package was just under $1000 Im my opinion, the lifetime warrenty on the cannon motors is really good feature as well. just my 2cents
  21. I have spent some time reading the recent fishing reports. Although everyone seems to be hitting lots of fish- I have yet to hear of anything big enough to make the minimun weigh in for the derby. Has anyone caught a decent sized fish for this season yet??
  22. Jeremy- are you guys fishing the spring derby this year? Foster
  23. Jeremy- Thanks for the info. It would be nice to be closer to the lake- the narrow channel into the creek would be interesting at 5:00AM (in total darkness) Foster
