  1. There are a bunch of hoops to jump thru here is the big one: #1 -- You must have 360 days on the water in the last 5 years. Most people do not qualify for this unless they have quit their jobs and fished a season or spend 75 days a summer on the water for the last 5 years. Log on to http://www.uscg.mil/nmc/ For more info. Good luck!! CC
  2. Anyone ever used the Abu Garcia 7000 lever drag (LD) or their Line counter reels? Thanks for the feedback. CC
  3. When the sun comes up go white with flashers, green with flys should do just fine. That said, I prefer spoons all the time, if the will go on spoons that's what I'll put out, more sport, less expensive. CC
  4. Joe will be missed greatly. I echo the grattitude for his contribution to making our fishery great. It is a sad day!! C. Bish
  5. Ray -- That was very good Color is directly related to light. Figure out how much light is available at the depth of your lure and you will know the color you need. Light is affected by way to many variables to be consistent day in and day out, plus most of us do not have the equipment or the time to measure available at our fishing depth. Besides if we did, conditions would change before we could get all the lines back in. Light penetration is dependent on: Reflection (each wave changes it) Angle (every moment the sun is moving across the sky) Refraction (See reflection) water clarity Cloud cover The list goes on...... What most of us do is take educated guesses. We use our experience in similar conditions to govern our color choices. The boat that catches the most fish is usually the one with the more experiences and/or better choice making. How do you get more experience? -- fish more and pay attention How do you make better choices? -- ADAPT, variation, innovation Down deep phosphorescence is the name of the game and we have been using this for years ever since Paul Betters painted his evil eyes glow and "At the Oak" Joe and Ron Penna put a glow ladder on a black and white pirate. Lhur Jensen was before them even with the glow J's Now we have many glow tapes and most spoons come with super glow paint. We all use them and most guys will have some glow accent on every lure below 20' (that is experience driving the better choice). One company takes it to a new level that is MOONSHINE that has a whole line of glows that phosphoresces (?) different colors and many shades of those colors. I don't have them figured out but the concept is solid. (choices) I do know (experience) that the Carbon 14 works all the time, TNT when overcast and Purple nurple/bish's bruiser when sunny. Nice thread, CC
  6. Any small orange doger <00 and a blue/gold howie trimmed short with treble only. Wire line 6oz lead 100' back. When they are there this rig will not stay in the water long. Other lures: Red & white honey bees on 8' sliders Salmo #8 deep runner hot perch 100' back (boards) http://www.salmofishing.com/lures/perch.html Here it the thing these fish are 15' - 22' down get something red infront of them and they will go, and go and go. Usually the kings are 40' to the bottom so put the red spoons (free sliding) on the 40' and 50' riggers and run the other riggers clean or mupped for the salmon. CC

  9. I sure hope you made the trip. Wind never got over 9mph and waves were <1' all day. Never, Never, Never cancel a trip 'cause of a forecast. You will be at home on the calm days and fishing on the rough ones 80% of the time!!! CC
  10. Nice work, thanks for the report!! CC
  11. There will be more and more of these fish showing up. An interesting thought is that because they are hybrid they may be sterile this would produce 5-8 year old fish and they could get real big. I first started seeing these fish in 2005 as two year olds in May. CC
  12. Don't forget when derby fishing -- If a guy has 3 fish in the box already do not let him land another fish 'cause if it is a derby fish it cannot be entered. CC
  13. hey Duane, Stop in at Narby's and tell Sharon that she should stay open longer to weigh in fish    Let me know how you make out with that. Missed you on Sunday, called a couple of times on 07 to say hi but you must have been elsewhere. CC
  14. It is a laser ladder, but the lure is awsome just out of the pack as well. I add split rings to them, but just because of the type of snap I run. I just taped one up with a purple stripe, but it did not go today. CC
  15. It is a wierd year. Chrome is right there are lots of fish to the west, but even so there have been some frustrating days. Last week I had a one fish day sandwiched between two 5 man limit days.....what is that about??? One of the days we did great another capt struggled the day we got one he limited by 9am every time by me he was hooked up and I could only buy 4 hits all day..............wierd!!!! He called me and thanked me for the "King Spoon" I gave him (carbon-14) he was fighting his 3rd fish on it .. I had 3 out and never took a hit on them all day. On tuesday last week the NK purple dalmation (a KING spoon!) took 8 fish ... I only had one, bought 6 more and didn't catch another fish on it the rest of the week. Why????? Start every day fresh and keep pulling steel the fish will show up. Fish smart, CC
  16. That fish was simply feeding out of temp. My guess is there was a ton of bait in that water column and this fish was on the feed. This fish is lacking distinguishing characteristics of a spawning king, namely the grayish underbelly and yellow spots that show up on stagers. My guess is its gullet was filled with alewives a stager would have a stomach as tight as Ray K's wallet. Chinook is right, for the last several years we have pulled kings out of the 70 degree water right on the wall at PB. Usually 1/2 hour before daybreak -- Labor Day weekend!! We are talking' 2' down over 10 fow. Those fishing the <100fow at PB in late July were taking all their fish out of temp. If you see them on the graph fish for them -- they are in there for one thing only -- to feed. Keep up the good work, CC
  17. I told him -- the rep -- that the paint was a problem after they catch a few fish, he chuckled and said that's why they make them that way. The NK - 28 NBK has been out fishing the paint peeler this year anyway!!! Hot spoon today was the purple dalmation NK-28 Smokin' CC
  18. Thanks guys, genetics is an interesting study, I only know the basics. Nick, It is simply the strains that are different. Think of it like race in humans. All the same species, but different dominant alleles in the genotype (the order of genes-genetic make-up) resulting in variations in gene expression or phenotype (the expression of genes-or what we see). Now, rainbows can breed with rainbows and produce viable offspring, so steelhead can breed domestics and produce offspring but only dominant genes will be expressed. I have no idea which strain has more dominant genes expressed in the phenotype, but my guess is that it is the steelhead, because this seems to be the most common strain. That said, inorder to achieve genetic diversity, I would guess that different strains have different conditions surrounding optimum spawning conditions. For instance, Skamania spawn in the summer which guarantees survival of the strain as only that strain is spawning at that time. Most likely the other strains have more subtle difference in spawning condition, perhaps one strain is a nocturnal spawner another only spawns in 2mm pebbles and another in 3mm. These differences would guarantee the genetic diversity of the species. It would be an interesting study if it has not already been done. The genetic diversity of the rainbow simply adds to its attractiveness as a sport fish. CC
  19. yep, I got this disorder..........I can't bear to think that fish are caught on a spoon that I don't have! CC
  20. Fact is there is no difference they share the same genus and species designation. It is their lifestyles that set them apart. A rainbow never leaves the stream (freshwater) and spends it's life there. Because the fish is a salmonid it has the ability to osmo-regulate and can thrive in both fresh and salt water (adronomous). A rainbow trout that ventures into the ocean to spend it life and only returns to the freshwater river to spawn is considered a steelhead. Remember that the rainbow/steelhead originates from the west coast/Pacific Ocean habitat. Technically we would have only rainbows in LO, but if you consider the big lake to be the ecosystem's equivalent to the ocean then you can consider a rainbow that spends most of its life in the big lake to be a steelhead. Also, you must take into consideration the origin of the genetic strain of the fish. NY and ON both brought eggs from western strains of steelhead and introduced them in to the lake during the major stocking trends of the 1970's. In 1984, NY began to introduce the Skamania steelhead (eggs from L. MI. via Indiana) this fish is a summer spawner and will begin to show up in creeks in July and August. Because of the genetic variability of these fish they appear longer with more slender bodies than the "domestic" rainbow. (Domestic being an oxymoron because it too is and introduced species not endemic to the LO ecosystem). So to wrap it all up you are always right calling them rainbows. If you get a fat one with a bit more pink hue on the side call it a "domestic" rainbow. Most of this species in the lake are decedents from the "steelhead" strain, so you can call them that as well. Hope this helps, now go out and "Get Some!!!" CC
  21. Hey, Salmonite, there is a charter boat in rochester named Dreamcatcher, the Capt fished with me a couple of times in the 80's and got the bug pretty bad himself!! Be careful 'cause he used to be a weekend warrior with a good job and lots of money, now he's an addict like me and has......well we won't go there!! CC
  22. Ok, here is a question for you all. Is there such a thing as a KING SPOON? (read on) I am checking out at Narby's when in walks a lure rep for the smaller lures that the paint comes off of (need I say more), we begin talking, I have my business shirt on so he knows I'm a capt., and he keeps pulling out lures saying "This is a KING spoon you have to get this one, Capt. Soandso Eastend designed it and it catches KINGS!!" After about 6 spoons, 4 flies and 3 flashers (this is a king flasher designed by Capt. Eastend and it catches KINGS!!!) Later on my way home, I am begining to think of my KING SPOONS: Carbon-14, 42 second, NBK, Raspberry Dolphin, orange crush, SSW and KING FLASHERS: WMD, Billy's Spotted SD, green/glow, chromy. Then I begin to think -- every spoon I tie on is a KING spoon or I would not tie it on. Maybe a spoon like steely-dan is a steelhead spoon, but about the time you throw it out to catch a steelhead guess what -- you'll catch a king, so it too would be a king spoon. Any how I think now whenever I talk to someone about a spoon that I use I will call it a KING Spoon! Oh and by the way those 6 spoons, 4 flies and 3 flashers haven't caught a KING yet and I doubt that Sharon will give me my $80.00 back!! CC
  23. I agree with ray, I think that this forecast is not plausible, forecasted wind direction and strength is not right for this to happen. Perhaps it is a history forecast rather than a conditions forecast. Ray, Did you know that there is a ridge off the NW corner of the Pt. Breeze breakwall where the bottom comes up 30-40 then back down again (in 500 FOW) this ridge cause bottom currents to push upward and becomes a structure magnet for the food chain. There was another 30+ king there today that succumbed to a MS Carbon -14. You need a chart or good chip in your gps plotter to find it. OR you can just look for the shine off my bald head!! CC
  24. The big Kings have been scattered. We are getting them every day, but it the days with more than 3 big guys have been far and few between. FWIW all 5 mature kings in my last 3 trips have all been on the same lure. Different depths and different presentations but same bait. The kings are on the north shore -- most likely. Fellow captain got into cohos last weekend out at the 34N line I think he boxed 3 that day. This is rather normal, you find one coho you find several. I remember years in the '80's that you would not see coho all year except for April and September. CC
