Depth raider signal
CBish replied to Penn yan 88's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
U guys know that there is a new fishhawk about to be on the market? -
Ray, I only intended to inform not to offend. I have no theory, just observation. You have yours as well. At the end of the day catching fish on lake ontario is not very hard in fact even a caveman can do it. Probably the same caveman who has a collection of kneecaps. Let me know when you intend to return to the Oak, most likely I will be there and show you a new coho rig!!! CC

Ray, Since you are new to the Oak you need to be corrected here. It is a NE wind that flips the lake on the west end. As a rule if the wind is E or NE the down temps begin to drop or the cold water begins to come to the surface. If there is enough wind the cold water will rise all the way to the surface along the shore and push the warm water north causing an upwelling or flipping of the lake. The surface current will be north bound. I have been fishing the oak since 1980 and I have never seen an upwelling caused by a S wind. I'm not saying it couldn't happen, I just have not seen it in 29 years of my experience. My guess is the the day you are reffering to was a S wind that was a day after a NE blow and peeled the top layer of water off to the north. Just this morning I was talking to Capts Jack, Clarence and John and we discussing how the temp was "coming up" reffering to an impending upwelling. We hope that it does not happen because the fishing has been very consistent at Point Breeze and we have not had to use much gas to get it done. I fished my last 4 trips without going more than 3 miles from port. If the lake does flip it will cause fog on shore and fish 7-16 miles out. To gain further help in this matter check the fishing tips page on the At the Oak site. Fish Smart, CC

Good topic for the winter when more time can be spent on writing about solutions. IMO Who in their right mind would put 100% into a charter business on a lake that is all put and take at the whim of the NY legislature. Really how important is LO fishing in the big NY picture? LO or Health Care? LO or Roads? LO or Schools? LO or welfare? LO or your assemblyman's paycheck? LO or Broad based tax cuts? LO or State Police? LO or ....................................................? Building a real business based on LO Fishing is alot like a story I heard about a man who built his house on the sand. I don't know about the business around where you fish, but here at Pt Breeze we are seeing marinas cater more toward the saliors and powerboaters than I ever saw in the last 20 years. Bobbers and snelled hooks are where spoons used to be in some bait shops. It is not smart to be a charter captain, but I have never claimed to be smart the future is like setting lines with your 8 best baits and knowing that you have done all that you can do the rest is up to the fish and the powers that be. On a newer motor use any 10w30 or 5w30 On my old 454 I use max life 10w30 If the motor is pre 90's you may wish to use straight 30 If you are having problems with pressure -- increase the weight but not over 50. CC

IMO stackers are a wast of time & effort. 2 on riggers with sliders/cheaters 2 dipsys 1 thumper 1 copper or LC Mix and match if you have 2 people otherwise run these 6. CC

in the Point Breeze area captains cove and lake breeze marina both have them CC

Now on ebay you know how to find them!! Good luck -
No snubbers on my boat. I use 30# mono (big game twine) the stuff stretches about 1 inch per foot anyway. You can be confident in heavy mono between the dipsy and the lure, just make sure the mono is in good condition. I tie new leaders about every day if the fish are hitting them. CC

SB, I thought that WORK is a 4 letter word for people that didn't know how to fish!!?? Not to rub it in but 2 more days and no more work untill after laborday for me!!!! CC

Cannon Digi Troll II down riggers
CBish replied to LevelGreener's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
before you buy DT II's call fish 307.com and ask them if they can be fixed if they break. If you get ones that do work well they are great fun to fish with. Good Luck CC -
reels for downrigger rods
CBish replied to bretter's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
A great reel for the riggers is a Shimano Charter special, the lever drag is fool proof and very fun to fight fish with. For line counters the Tekota is a great looking reel, drag range is too narrow IMO. The best line counters that I have owned are the Diawa 47 SGLCA the farther east they are made the better ie the japan was better than the korea and korea was better than the china ones. This is a good reel to buy used if you can find one very durable. Ok to use this on the riggers or planerboards as well. Good luck, CC -

Trolling and oil changes
CBish replied to traveling man's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
GB, If you have the room in your basement or a heated garage, you may want to put your lower unit down there for the winter. It will last longer and you certainly know that the splines were greased when you put it back in in the spring. CC -
GB, You should not take any offence from my NY friends. We certainly appreciate the $$ that you spend when you come up here. You know that there are some effective techniques that have been named after some PA fishermen that have come up here to fish. In fact, one of the most famous the "mup rig" is named after a PA fisherman who shared in the early practice of a mag spoon cheater 6' above a mini streak. He would use the phrase "come up here" so much that it began to sound like "come mupear" then we shortened it to just "mupear" and finally simply "mup". SOOO if you are around a port and you hear folks talking ever so fondly about the "mupear's" you now know to whom we are affectionately referring. Finally, even though we do not admit it, many of us proud central and western NYrs have a pennsyltukian in our woodpile -- if you know what I'm saying!! We really are not that different -- just that our ancestors evolved quicker and moved north earlier. The farther north -- the more evolved --up to about the 43' 25"N, then it goes back the other way again. Your friend, CC

I got my SS wire line and spooled the reels
CBish replied to Richard's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
Captain's cove is great. Bought a pair of Cannon 20DT at a price I could not beat anywhere -- and I shop hard!! You can give them a call if you are going to be in the area and they will set aside the lures you want and hold them for you. if they dont have them they will usually order them in for you! Their lodging is great. They have Bish's Bruiser Moonshines on the shelf!! Yes this is a shameless plug!!! Great store!! CC -

Berkley Big Game vs. Ande Pink?
CBish replied to ray koziatek's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
Been using big game since it was introduced. I call it big game twine -- it is the way to go. Little memory, lots of stretch very durable. I have one 30# rig that I have not changed the line in 3 years, more salmon have been landed on that line then many a fisherman has caught in a lifetime. CC -
Sailboats are not really an issue with copper are they? Once the copper is 100' back it is 22' down and well out of the way of a keel. I have never had a sailboat within 100' of my stern in 28 years trolling. I know this cause I can throw a one pound ball about 145' and I have not hit one yet -- they usually see & hear the splash . Other trollers are the problem. Although the phrase "that's fishing" rings hollow when you copper is going sideways it is part of our fishing. If you think a boat is going to get you pull it in fast!!! this is the only way you will avoid it. The flag is a good idea, but it must be seen, identified and the boat must care. I am always keeping an eye on what is infront of my boat, but I am afraid that I do not look close enough to see a flag from a 1/4 mile. CC PS, The great thing about copper is it splices very easy

Beware of prop changes if you go to far you can cavitate and over rev your engine. I would put a prop on in August that would allow me speeds sub 1mph for dodger fishing, but no top end (cavitation) Was great for the dodger fishing we used to do circa 1988, fishing the ledge at the oak, didn't need to go far. Also with fuel prices being what they are today the most important thing about your prop is fuel effeciency. Before buying a prop ask some fishing buddies (marinas) to let you borrow one of a different pitch. They are easy to change. Try them out and see what you get. CC
