  1. Don't see it helping a single screw much. I love fenders, dock wheels and other inflatables. CC
  2. Add-a-lines are great, if you can't thread them take a small drill bit to them or ream them out with a hook. Don't drop the rubberbands in your boat, they will burn out a bilge pump in a heartbeat. CC
  3. I had a 26' Islander for years. A plate works well, but hinders steering. I had best results with bags. Some guys have been fabricating big trim tabs that they put down to slow their boats, you may want to look into that. CC
  4. I use a 20# leader, P-line Fluro-clear - 4 spoons If your leader is too long you will get fleas. 4 flasher go direct!! CC
  5. MUST BE INSTALL ERROR CAUSE THAT'S ONE HECK OF A BOAT!! CC
  6. Use the OR-16 with the pin in the middle. Put the line on the inside of the pin. Then wrap the line around the release so it does not slide down. It will not release but it does not need to reel in the board first then the fish. CC
  7. Doubt it will work as a thumper -- for that you need a rod with a fast action the faster the better. Anything works with leadcore although a 6 footer seems short, I have used 7 footers with some success. Try it, changing rods is easy. CC
  8. Rod, There is no wrong way as long as the fish are coming to the boat. Do what works for you. CC
  9. You may have something there Hans, I don't remember dropping many 1lbers to the bottom cause of small fish and I would remember cause that would tick me off!! The big evil eyes were good slow too. Was that the Sutton 06 and 78? CC
  10. Changing the hook will affect the speed range and action of a spoon, just hold it over the side and see if it is running right, who am I kidding you would do that anyways and always. CC
  11. I change lures about 100x each 8 hour trip.....but usually the same 20 - 30 lures and only 3 - 4 different blanks. This is the progression that works for me: with reflecting spoons go black / purple to sliver / green with sun intensity and red to purple with depth. Keep in mind the color spectrum of light and make changes based on that. Glow lures are a whole different ball game because they do not obey the spectrum rules, just remember fish love red when they can see it!!! CC
  12. 20# big game to a spro swivel/duolock snap. Used to use cross lock and add a split ring to lures without them (moonshines, stingers) with the duolock I don't need the split ring. I hate loosing any tackle so I avoid florocarbon and tie the big game twine directly to the swivel-snap. In the green water I don't feel like floro is needed. CC
  13. There is a body of scientific data that would support going colder. Several studies in the Pacific and one in Michigan suggest that the juveniles of certain pelagic species will occupy a niche that is 3-4 degrees C higher than the adult members of that species. CC
  14. Just an observation to put things into perspective, lest we think we are so efficient a fish catching community that we may hurt the ecosystem. 1-- A pro/am puts as much pressure on a port as any other single event 2-- 46 pro boats fished this year 3-- If each limited that would be 24x46=1104 fish killed (max poss.) 4--Approx 2.6 mil fish stocked each year with a 4 year cycle puts 10+ mil in lake (excludes CN stocking, Atlantics, browns & lakers, attrition not accounted for) 5--The pros in the pro am could kill .000105 of the total fish in the lake or .01% 6-- If the tourney paid $10,000 and you only had to pay .01% in taxes your total tax bill would be $1.00 7--The tourney (s) have little impact on fish mortality, truth be told no matter how efficient a fish killer we think we can be, we have little impact on fish mortality compared to other factors such as temp shock, bigger fish, a flock of cormorants and sea lampreys. The problem is not so much the environmental impact of killing the small fish as it is not catching them and catching larger ones instead. That I can't help you with as my boat has been under small fish attack for the last 3 weeks. Good luck at the OAK! CC
  15. I run wire on one side and 50 lb power pro on the other. It is easier to clean flees from PP than wire, just slide the fleas into a ball/line spin the ball and pull and the PP will cut the fleas instantly. Other advantages is you can use the PP rod off an outrigger or attach a quick release dipsy 50 ft up the line. I do not think I will ever buy wire again when I am done with the wire I have now, I will go to PP. I do prefer PP to Fireline, stronger, coated, color retention. CC
  16. Steve, Find a reliable charter out of your area and book a trip. You will learn more in half a day than you could from tutorials. Pick one that will talk to you on the radio or cell phone in the future. CC
  17. Well said Duane, I think we are on the same page. CC
  18. OK.............so the first place Salmon and Rainbow did not read the temp map..............I think that it is now 2 years in a row that the big money fish did not come out of Niagara County. I know that very few boats fished out of the Oak, in fact last Saturday (5/3) there were less than 10 several days last week there were only 1 or 2 derby boats -- a very low number for a port that has the potential of delivering a grand prize fish. How many derby fished out of Rochester and points east compared to the # out of Niagara? CC Ps. Jimski2, the post is about fishermen not the fish, but thanks for the refresher on Poikiotherm metabolism.
  19. The main thing is to know where your balls are, not how heavy they are or at what angle. The only way to do this is with a wide angle fish finder. If you can see your balls you know where they are relative to each other. The other thing is if you have a temp unit it will usually blow back a bit farther then others, again if you know the depth on the finder, you can adjust all lines to the fish zone. CC
  20. Just wondering what if 100 or 50 or 25 or even 10 boats had fish the Oak every day last week? Would all the salmon and rainbows on the leaderboard have been from the Oak? No one fished from Monday until Friday, well not no one only 2-3 boats each day. Then salmon show up big over the weekend. Were they there the whole time and no one was fishing there? Or did a couple of big fish just show up on Sunday???? CC
  21. As a old timer running suttons then evil eyes then pirates then nks, I have always thought that a spoon needs a split ring and I have spent hours and fingernails putting them on stingers and moonshines. I have always used berkley crosslock swivels which come to a blunt point and pinch a spoon. The Moonshine manufacturer suggested that I use a DUOLOCK snap swivel with a rounded end run directly to the spoon. Anyone have any insights on this??? CC
  22. A reel easy knot is to loop the wire and tie an overhand knot, put the loop thru the eye of the swivel and half hitch it. Simple but works fine. Pull tight with pliers on the swivel and the wire wrapped several times around your arm (with long sleeve shirt). Good luck CC
  23. Ray, Are you using pline floro or pline floro-clear? I have had great luck with the floro-clear at a fraction of the cost of the 100% floro. CC
  24. Had the same thing happen, I called fish307 they sent the cable for $14 +tax & shipping. It took me 5min to replace. If you order it make sure you get some of the black silicone goop to seal it with. I was also told that the New Cannon is discontinuing parts for the pre 2006?models & once the parts are gone owners will be SOL. I sold all mine on ebay last week, prices are dropping fast on the used stuff because the public is becoming more aware that your old cannon will be worthless if it gives up the ghost. CC
