Pt. Breeze - June 27
CBish replied to CBish's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Shadster, You may go to youtube search for salmocharters and watch the video if you like. There was no model, just a 25 year old gal fishing with her brother, father and boyfriend. Here are some stills from the video: You should get out on the water more with pretty young girls and catch some big fish so you can get a better idea how they actually appear together. You know the best way to spot a counterfeit is to look at the real thing if you think the real thing is a counterfeit then ...............................? No green crap salmonite. CC -

Thanks guys! The fish was 28# on my chiltilion scale(+/-3#), it hit the 600 copper with the standard purple nurple. Most action was on the standards today, although the Silver Flounder is a medium sized lure about the size of a stingray. On the riggers I run a mag mupped over a standard on the deep rig 5-7' leads on the outdowns 20 - 30' leads I find that the plastic gloves endears me to the women!!! CC -
==================== SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS ==================== Ran east 6 miles. Nasty current boat was trucking to the east, slooooow to the west. Marked much bait and fish in 60-80 fow, temp on bottom 58 degrees. No takers, moved out to 100' temp on bottom 51 no takers. Began a N/E troll hit the 160 fow line and a steelhead hit the rigger I was setting 1' down, landed him then missed a fish on the center rigger 123' down, next miss 600' copper -- all in a row, one right after another from the surface to 132' down. Kept working N/E -> S/W between 120' and 180' and kept them going until we quit at noon. Most fish were on the small side but this one made up for that: Hot lures: Moonshine Purple Nurple - 600' copper Moonshine Bish's Bruiser - 85' rigger (53 degree water) Moonshine Silver Flounder - 60' rigger (58 degree water) NK Yellow NBK - 1' and 20' rigger (64 degree water) DOWN SPEED 2.8 MPH BRING ON THE SUMMER!!!! First this question: Why would I need to believe in global warming -- if it is true science then global warming can be proven and would not require faith--"believe" It really bothers me when someone challenges a "belief" in scientific phenomenon. Second: I can remember days in mid June when we would be fishing the bottom of the Pt. Breeze ledge to find 55 degrees. This year in mid June we were catching Brown trout in 53 degree water 5' down over 10' Third: The transects hardly cut the mustard for scientific sampling, rarely do they accurately correspond with actual readings on the lake. I find them to be +/- 5 degrees at best when compared to my actual observations on the lake. Fourth: The warmer the lake the better the fishing. The warmer and wider the epilimnion the more defined the metalimnion will be reducing the attractiveness of the hypolimnion to our targeted species. Good fishin' CC

Bill, I have many joints in my copper!! You know how I fish by the seat of my pants!!! I find it novel that I have a 575' and no other boat does!!! It actually drives a couple of my fellow captains nuts because I tell them my 343' copper is working. I was looking forward to sharing a dock with you this year at Lake Breeze, too bad your not going to be around. I do respect your decision -- kudos!! Yankee, In the summer I like to fish short and circle tight keeping the boat on the fish as long as a bite is going, that is why I don't like to run the boards. I have little problem if the fish are hitting right away, but if I get 6 out and no bites, I just can't stop myself from putting out more and then they hit and I'm in trouble. You know -- 2nd copper half out, dipsy goes with a big guy, rigger pops and the other dipsy misses a fish and I am screwed because I'm netting a fish and the spinner on the tripped dipsy is honeymooning with my half out copper and the result is 28' less copper on that reel! Oh well! CC
-
Steve, Once Friday gets here I will be unemployed untill after Labor Day. I will try to update my site each day I fish, but being unemployed means I will have also have a long honeydo list!! CC

I have to ask -- are you talking about SS wire with dipsys vs copper run without dipsys or are you talking about running dipsys on your copper??? DON'T run dipsys on copper -- you can, but just don't -- it is sort of like putting a clown horn on a Harley. Do run dipsys on SS wire Fishing is like Algebra -- there is an order of operations for continual success it goes something like this: (S), D, S/C, D, C/L (Surface lines), Downrigger, Slider/cheater, Dipsy, Copper/Leadcore Like Algebra there are other ways to solve the problem, but when in doubt go back to order of operations. It's the tangles usually with a released dipsy or another copper. Mostly last year with no auto-pilot & I think my outriggers put my coppers right above (and behind) the dipseys and once you hook a spinner on the copper it is all over!! This year I'll run a bobber and 100' off the outrigger, that should take care of the problem. I hardly ever get kinks or backlashes. CC

Spike, Back in the 80's program fishing was introduced and written about extensively in InFisherman by John Orvac, TROUTMAN!!! A program was lures that shared a common speed for example if you were running suttons then you also ran "00" dodgers (SLOW), if you were running Pirates you would stick to them, not mixing them with J-plugs or dodgers, thus a "program" was similar lures (could be colors/patterns) run together, like you have spoke about in your post. NOW, a program is simply anything that works on a particular day for a particular guy. So instead of a spook program being every rigger mupped with black/white spoons with a glow ladder we say the spook program is working on the center and the NBK program on the outdowns. Or if you are in Oswego it goes somthing like this: "The program I showed you at the dock on the center rigger, the same program as yesterday on the outdowns and the dipsy's are working with the sunny day program...Yep even though it's cloudy!!" Pretty much the program talk is the "reality TV series" of the lake!! Don't get hung up on it about the time you have figured it out the rules change!! CC

OK -- I am Humbled -- You and Dave -- I just need to become a better fisherman. My 600 is already a 575, my 400 a 375, I measured my 300 and it was 250. My 200 is 200. I hope that some fish start biting my riggers, otherwise I may be forced into a 5th set up and I don't know how I would ever manage it. CC

Simrad AP14R or Raymarine X-5 Sportpilot which is better?
CBish replied to HPORT's topic in This Old Boat
I have about 20 trips on my Raymarine X5. It has been an excellent unit for me and has held my boat rock solid in every condition experienced so far even a couple of days we pulled early because of the weather. I am a little concerned because the unit is making a grinding noise for the first hour every trip(just noise no operational issue) -- then it quiets down and runs normal. I hope it is not a drive issue. BUT it aint broke and with the remote around my neck, I don't need a driver and can go all day without touching the wheel. That is what AP is all about!!! I know nothing about the AP14R, so I can't comment on that. CC -
Half hitch to the main line and the snap on the loop -- dont forget to put the snap over the main line as well or you will have a steelhead giving you the fin with your lure in his mouth. Been there......done that!! CC
-
Not just a plummer, a plummer that is trying to mimick a school of bait fish with 8 spoons--good luck with that!! CC
-
COOL!! Now if I could just get my name on it!!!
-
I stand corrected -- thanks Steve. I thought that I remembered the new power cord being flat, but I was going on my failing memory. CC
-
Gambler, Do you keep all of yours measured and to the exact length like the magician does or do your coppers gradually get shorter all season? CC
-
Gotta bite, You do not need a level wind, I have had non level wind reels for copper/leadcore for many years and it really is not a big deal. Many newbies to fishing have landed fish on my non-level wind without much problem. You should be fine. Gambler, If you put all your coppers in your rocket launchers does your boat get top heavy?? CC

With the many post about copper set ups and how to run them and what are needed for reels, I thought I would throw up this post on how I determine which reel to buy for my copper set-ups. From my experience I know that I can put a 300' copper on a Tekota 700 and a 400-600' copper on a Tekota 800. (Also from my experience I know that these reels do not hold up for a whole 80 trip season on the lake) SO....I researched the line capacities of these reels and found that the 700 can hold about 350 yards of 30# and the 800 about 450 yards of 30# Now I was able to go to various websites and search for reels that had comparable line capacities and other features that I wanted once I found the model I wanted I could shop for it. This may take alot of the guess work out of determining if a reel can hold the copper you want to run.
-
Gambler is right, those reels can't hold enough copper and backing -- the less copper you have on a reel the more backing you need. You will need 300 yards behind 200' but you only need 200 yards behind 600'. If you like the penn 209 you may want to look for some penn senators they are a bit larger and should be good for copper. GB, We were running a 200', 275', and a 300' last sunday one on each planer board and one down the chute trolling in a big figure 8. I have sold my tekotas because I could not get them to last a season without repair, I had a 700 and a pair of 800's and 5 or 6 600lc's. You can get a better reel without spending the long dollar. A reelly nice one for 200' is the Okuma Solterra 15L Level wind and lever drag. The lever drag is sweet for letting out the copper at a measured speed and you won't ever have a breakoff from your drag being too tight. You can also get away with many salt water non levelwind reels, you may be able to pick these up at a reasonable price. I have been using some non levelwinds for several years now and have not run into a problem with the line spooling properly. That is with inexperienced fisherman on the rod most of the time. I figure if you can catch a 150 tuna on a Titus 55, I can catch a 25 pound king on it. I will let you know how the Titus works out it is new this year with 600' on it. Good luck, CC

MT, You will need to replace your triducer and power cord. I have had the X4 since the first week of April, still on my first set of batteries, still working like the best speed temp probe I have ever owned!! Buy it now don't waste any time on the water with out it!! CC

In the summer many times less is more. There are days that I have 6 guys on board and I only run 5 lines -- 3 riggers, 2 dipsys. Most summer days I run 6 the added line being a copper. If I were you I would add a copper and go somewhere where there are not so many boats. If I can't run my 300' copper it is simply to crowded and I move to the edge of the pack. I think that you will be fine with 2 riggers, 2 dipsys and a copper. You can always stack one if you feel naked not haveing your limit of lines in!! CC
-
A swivel on both ends of 7' of line one with a lure and the other attached to the line of a rod loaded on a downrigger. Typically a cheater is held in place by an add-a-line or rubberband and a slider just slides up and down on the line. CC
